So Duckshiyt will “oppose all nondiversity candidates”. In other words , no crackers!!! I sure wish we could all dream of a world where people were judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.

Indeed, this is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

I just posted about it too.

What they said is bad enough, but the non-reaction by the dumbcrats makes it worse. W T F ?

Democrats have had a long history of racism. What do you expect?

It really is disgusting how democrats have damaged race relations in this country.

If all of Biden's picks were non white, and he truly thought they were the best candidates, those picks would be the right picks.

Exactly!! That’s what we all want. Hire the best regardless of whatever political boxes they check off. Dang I wish we could get there.

Re: Yet another example of systemic racism

I wish we could get there, too. But we are not there yet - not by a long shot.

Some people think that we will get there faster if people can see that non-whites can really do the jobs and display the qualities that some Americans do NOT give them credit for. It is clumsy and inefficient, but it may actually help in the long run.

What would YOU suggest that we do to help us move more rapidly toward a truly color-blind society.

Re: Yet another example of systemic racism

Simply stop seeing race in everything. People do bad things. People do stupid things. I need the media and others to stop calling us racists because we have conservative views. It’s getting boring honestly. We need people to stop stoking the fire. I don’t have a more complicated solution.

I, too, think that the racist label is a hinderance. It refuses to recognize the various degrees of racial prejudice. If we could dial down the rhetoric enough to admit that we all have SOME degree of racial prejudice, then maybe we could start working towards consciously reducing those levels of prejudice - and helping each other do so.

Ah, a boy can dream, can't he ?

Yes, we ALL have some degree of racial prejudice.

Only white people can be racists. All others are just expressing their frustrations from oppression.

Here you go sugar

These women have already withdrawn this threat. They have been promised by the Biden administration that they will put someone in place to consider and address the concerns of these Senators.

The threat to block nominees was clumsy and heavy-handed, but it was political, not racial. These Senators represent constituencies that they feel are under-represented in America. They used the power that the Dems slim majority in the Senate gave them to better represent their constituents (sort of like Joe Manchin, but with different issues).

It is possible (and desirable) to be for one group without being against others.

You reactionaries want to get all outraged over something that will be inconsequential within the week.

Re: Yet another example of systemic racism

Mar 25, 2021, 10:21 AM

But at minimum is that not disturbing behavior for a senator. If a white senator said he or she will oppose nonwhite candidates would he or she be considered just an outlier ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yet another example of systemic racism

Mar 25, 2021, 10:36 AM

Tar

IF I thought that these Senators viewed white people as incapable of leadership positions, I might consider that a significant problem. But I don't think that is the case (& I don't think you do either).

They had some political leverage to address a problem that they think is important to their constituencies and they used that leverage to gain political traction. Politicians use political leverage all of the time (see Joe Manchin). The connection of leverage to race gets more attention automatically and sensationalistically, but it is really just political maneuvering.

I DO find it disturbing that Senators would be so clumsy and strident - that they could not predict the backlash by going public in this way. I would have thought a private meeting with someone in the Biden administration would have been more effective, but . . .

Finally, anybody in America can be racially prejudiced. In fact, I would argue that the vast majority are - to some greater or lesser extent - but let's be honest. Given our history, a white supremacist would be far less rare than an Asian or Pacific Islander supremacist, no ?

Re: Yet another example of systemic racism

Yeah, and it is so disheartening and energy-sapping. If we could find an effective way to move significantly in the direction of true color-blindness, think how much energy we could apply to our general welfare rather than this tribal bullyshitt. Think how much better ALL of our lives could be.

Re: Yet another example of systemic racism

Mar 25, 2021, 1:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Yet another example of systemic racism ]

I think the number of true white supremacists is a small percentage of whites. Racism exists everywhere. Go to some of the more remote areas of Hawaii and you will learn what a haole is and get the stink eye for simply being white and a tourist. The Japanese felt whites were inferior during WWII and even looked down on the Chinese, Koreans, Filipinos, etc.

Color shouldn't matter as none of us choose our color. Some want whites to care about people of a different color. I don't care what color you are. That is a problem to some non whites as they want us to care more.

So by that line of thinking, I should vote for people who racially represent me. I would not be against a group. I would just be for a group, based on race. I think that is just wrong headed.

Maybe political contributions would be a better illustration of my position here.

Imagine that you were black and successful enough to want to make political contributions to a candidate for office. You might seek out a black candidate that you thought was very smart and honest to give your contributions to. There might be a white candidate that you respected as well, but you wanted to support the black candidate - not because she might represent you better somehow, but because you think it would help race relations in our country if all people could see a black woman doing a difficult job well.

Would that be racism ?

I would love to live in a truly color-blind society, but we are not there, yet. Could something like the scenario above move us in that direction ?

Re: Yet another example of systemic racism

Yes that would be racist. Would it be racist if I contributed to a white person's campaign, even if I thought there was a better black candidate, because I wanted to support a white person?
I think we probably agree on what the outcome of a just society would look like. I just believe justifying racism, of any sort, will drive division further and destroy the hope of a just society.

Cool, good response. But you also know if conservative republicans said this the dems would call them racists and their would be an uproar on CNN,MSNBC,ETC.

I don't disagree.

Some in the news media will seek any opportunity to gain viewers by sensationalizing the news.

And some politicians will try to gain votes and notoriety by demonizing the other party.

The question is will we continue to allow ourselves to be jerked around by this hyperbole, or are we smart enough to discern what is truly important from what is not.
