The truth about Tigernet
Jun 30, 2014, 12:20 PM
|
|
I have been a member of Tnet for almost 10 years now. I rely on it heavily for news about football and recruiting mostly. The news and articles bring great joy to me and I appreciate the professional service Tnet provides us. I don’t post a lot as I don’t usually have time but the recent discussions have made me realize many things about the culture here:
1. Tnet is a essentially a virtual neighborhood. There are popular people, jocks, good neighbors and bad. And boy, some people really spend a lot of time kicking it in the hood.
2. There are a lot of morons on the internet which makes it great and terrible at the same time.
3. It’s an echo chamber in here. I have to borrow Colin Cowhard’s words, but it is. If you don’t fall in line and say something like USC sucks, ESPN is a propaganda machine, the SEC is evil, Clowney is a moron, Clemson will win the NC, Obama sucks, etc. then you open yourself to being ‘outted’ or shunned as a Coot, Lib, gahy, or commie, etc. That’s fine, it’s a site about Clemson after all. I accept that ‘risk’
4. The demographic of Tigernet is far older than I have always thought. Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, but I have recently discovered some 65% of Tnet is over 50. There is nothing wrong with that and kudos for being so savvy, but I am genuinely surprised. Surprised that so many older people spend so much time on the internet. Many of the older Tnetters offer great perspective and history. Thank you. And many say horrible shameful things. My dad is a 55 year old colonel. He would never spend his time talking to virtual people, and he would certainly never say some of the childish crap that gets slung around. I’m not saying spending a lot of time on Tnet is wrong, but having balance and perspective is always important. 5. I simply don’t have much in common with most here other than love for Clemson, of which I am an alum.
6. Obviously I am of the Millennial generation. We Millennials are different than the older generation. I love my parents and grandparents. They and their peers are great people who have raised us and shaped us. They have ushered in great change, ie. the freedom summer of ’64 which is celebrating 50 years now. We Millennial’s are now more socially tolerant. We have traveled more. Our world is more ‘Globalized’. Its ok that we’re a little different, WE hold the future to America and the country is moving forward because it has to. The past is in the past, let’s not forget its lessons. Change is constant, face it. Accept it. Deal with it and move on.
I say all this to say this. Some of us are ashamed of the behavior here. I am not sure Tnet will go on as my #1 source for Clemson stuff and I definitely won’t be engaging in many more conversations. Many of you will be happy to hear this as I know it will keep your blood pressure lower. This is my way of saying this relationship isn’t working - we need to go separate ways and we can call it mutual. But know this: I will ALWAYS love Clemson.

"Some of us are ashamed of the behavior here"???

Well hell son, people are ashamed of a lot of things other people do. So what kind of stuff are you talking about that you are so sensitive to? I think that is another key to understanding younger folks--oversensitive to folks who don't hold to the same views they hold. But, to each his own.

You seem like a smart dude and a lot of what you say isn't really far off, but you probably shouldn't take it so seriously around here. You'll have a bad time.

I'm being funny and serious at the same time.
PS: I agree with you, it's a neighborhood. What's funny is I know the football, amphitheater, etc... crowd, but if I venture over to the other boards I don't recognize anyone. There are neighborhoods within neighborhoods I guess.

point number 3, I came out as a Bama fan also and it hasn't been too bad so far. Roll Tide.
Point number 6 seems hypocritical when taken with the ashamed comment. Isn't it a good healthy conversation to have multiple points of view about any subject? Seems at odds with the "we're much more socially tolerant" line.
Overall this is a very well thought out bored suicide note.

Maybe if you were to post your own bored suicide note it would make this one slide down to a 4?

They get a thrill from being an anonymous a-hole to other anonymous people. We also have a bad case of the coot-ies in here.
If you want to feel better about t-net, go to some other team's sites and see that it's the same thing (and sometimes worse) on most of them.
Just ignore the boreds and you'll be fine. The good stuff is in the articles anyway. The rest is a waste of time, really.

Cliff notes
1. There are many different types of people on Tnet
2. One of those types are the morons (probably people who aren't like me)
3. Everyone thinks the same way but me. I accept the risk of being labeled a moron by others.
4. Good job on getting internet you old farts.
5. It's not you, it's me... or maybe you.
6. I'm so tolerant I can't take it anymore. Buzzword fillers including: Millenial, socially, change and "deal with it"

Looking back to his post history it looks like the problem
Jun 30, 2014, 12:56 PM

is his agenda that is all about soccer and how others should embrace it as the sport of the future. Well, perhaps that's true. And these would be great posts for the TigerNet ProZone Board which was set up for the World Cup, etc. Or he could post on the Tiger Pros and Other if he is posting about Clemson's soccer teams. His posts would be appropriate and for people with his same interest.
He has ample opportunity to put his views out there to those interested. But if there is no interest on the main boards he cannot really blame us who are here for other Clemson sports. JMHO.

Re: The truth about Tigernet

I know I'm one of the youngsters at 45 here. I don't claim near as much wisdom as my elders here and I will always respect the wisdom of my elders. It doesn't mean I agree with them on all issues but I'm willing to listen to their reason for feeling the way they do. Likewise I would expect they would do the same for me. If they don't then I consider it their loss for losing the ability to realize they don't know it all and a reminder to me to never feel like I have learned it all or know it all.
Our coach holds the key for all of us in just a few great principles. Are we an All in family that loves one another no matter what. I really feel like these are the principles that make Clemson and the upstate of SC different than other places people may go. We treat everyone as family when they come to Clemson. We love our neighbor as ourselves and we love God with all our heart, soul and mind. These principles make the best kids in the country want to come to Clemson in the middle of nowhere. You can't say it and make people be that way but when most people treat you like that, it's contagious, it's real and it makes all of us want to be apart of a family that loves us no matter what.
In summary, Clemson has the most loyal loving fans anywhere!!
Here on Tigernet people can agree to disagree but if something serious happens in your Tigernet family and you share it we all will be the first people that would offer a prayer, encouragement or help in anyway possible. Basically Love in action!! Their is something special in these hills....LOVE. Go Tigers!!!

I'm much more ashamed of the behavior of other millennials than I am of most of the behavior on here. Yes, it's full of homers who can't stand to hear any criticism of Clemson, but at least it's full of people who are concerned about Clemson. We don't come here to get the "globalized" version of things, as if that were any more true for the fact that it's less rooted in any particular place.
It's also true that, if "change is constant," you have no idea whether "WE [as if all millennials are just like you] hold the future." As far as you know, since "change is constant," what's going on in the elite culture right now may very well be reversed in the next few years.

Darn it. I thought you were real people at computers/tablets/phones having conversations.
My takeaways:
1) He loves Clemson 2) There are a lot of opinions on here that are "wrong" because he disagrees with them 3) It's okay that you're wrong...you're old 4) He speaks for his entire generation and they have figured it out 5) Tigernet Suicide
The Echo Chamber comment is a mainstay for people who cannot articulate their argument effectively. That's right up there with "What about FREE SPEECH!?!", as a signal that you MIGHT not know what's going on.

This is what "experts" say. I'm not saying the OPer fits.
Jun 30, 2014, 1:32 PM

American sociologist Kathleen Shaputis labeled Millennials as the boomerang generation or Peter Pan generation, because of the members' perceived tendency for delaying some rites of passage into adulthood, for longer periods than most generations before them. These labels were also a reference to a trend toward members living with their parents for longer periods than previous generations.
Jean Twenge, the author of the 2006 book Generation Me, considers Millennials, along with younger members of Generation X, to be part of what she calls "Generation Me".[29] Twenge attributes Millennials with the traits of confidence and tolerance, but also identifies a sense of entitlement and narcissism based on personality surveys that showed increasing narcissism among Millennials compared to preceding generations, when they were teens and in their twenties.

I find that the entitled and narcissistic thing is true. But our parents are the ones who drilled in our heads that America was the best place on earth and we could do anything we set our mind to and that we were each special butterflies who deserved the best. There's some obvious pushback when we realize that's not the case.
That I'm self aware of how my generation thinks helps me to act more reasonable in my work ethic and in my dealings with folks, but who is responsible for the way we were raised?
Let's get philosophical up in here

I guess I was looking for an explanation as to why it seems so many in that generation preach tolerance (which is good), but do not extend the same tolerance if you disagree with them (which seems hypocritical).
I thought this excerpt really helped me comprehend... Twenge attributes Millennials with the traits of confidence and tolerance, but also identifies a sense of entitlement and narcissism based on personality surveys that showed increasing narcissism among Millennials compared to preceding generations, when they were teens and in their twenties.
Again, this was a question regarding a generation as a whole, not anyone in particular.
PS: ibwg, you the man. PSS: This is not an attack on any generation, just noting traits.

is it a generational reaction parents have "not wanting to make the same mistakes" their parents made & a general change in the "what is best" probably based along similar lines?
let's face it, most are products; people reach the age of "self-realization" at different rates & are probably driven so by varied exposure to externals.

Special little snowflake.
Born between 1982 and 1994 this generation is something special, cause Mom and Dad and their 5th grade teacher Mrs. Winotsky told them so. Plus they have a whole shelf of participation trophies sitting at home so it has to be true.
They believe themselves to be highly intelligent, the teachers and lecturers constantly gave them "A"'s in order to keep Mom and Dad from complaining to the Dean. Unfortunately, nobody explained to them the difference between and education and grade inflation so they tend to demonstrate poor spelling and even poorer grammar.
At work, millennials believe themselves to be overachievers who just aren't understood by their loser bosses. Even Mom said so when she showed up for the interview. They are the only generation in the universe to understand the concept of work life balance and to actually want to find a fulfilling career. All those Gen X losers just don't get it what with hoping to keep their jobs and pay the bills but they are just corporate drone so who cares what they think? They should be smart like Millennials and get Mom and Dad to pay for that stuff until they can work out what they want to do with their lives and then get rich doing it.
Well, I've been here at this job for 6 months now and I've been on time mostly so I should get a raise now 'cause I've paid my dues. Did you know we are the most technologically advanced generation, like eva? And smart too. They call us millennials cause we were born before the millennial I think.

Every generation is different and every generation is the same. Gen Y was different. Baby Boomers. Etc. Millenials are no different than those in the past with the exception that they are tethered to their phone and don't like eye contact.

Who do you think came up with the idea of the internet. Who do you think taught your generation about and how to use the internet. Hint: it was not the Millennial generation.
Yep, your generation is different. You have not been taught that the world owes you nothing with no effort on your part. You have not been taught respect of others.
OMG,,are you kidding me? We Millennial’s are now more socially tolerant. LOL and then you go on to diss people over 50. You diss people because of different opinions. Yep, that is really socially tolerant. I am in my 60's and taught classes to your generation on how to use the internet. And just because your dad would never talk to vitual people...Sorry you have a fuddy duddy as a dad. If he is a colonel, I can promise you he has said and promoted many childish things.
My generation actually talked to people in person and did not have a phone stuck to our ear 24/7. We would have had the crap beat out of us if we acted the way most of your generation acts.
Hate to tell you, little boy, but your entire posts reeks of your generation....know it all entiled thinking little spoiled brats.

I am only upset you beat me to it!
Of course, I am over 50 ( barely ), the son of an Army Colonel who by the way was an absolute riot in his life after the USArmy and I cannot thumb text 8,000 words a minute like the entitled youth of today and I come on here 5 minutes at a time once or twice as a diversion.
I am ashamed of myself I think

Don't know if you are correct about the demographics, but that fact (?) doesn't necessarily correlate to the contributors (mainly most of them are arrogant, intolerant Millennials) to posts you don't like.
With regard to Millennials, I work at a large company with offices all across the country and HR has talked some about Millenials.
My experience with Millenials are that they are arrogant without justification, into themselves, not respective of others, late often, want to do things their way only, want to do what they want and not what asked even if it will be of benefit to the team, and slow to adapt and learn becaue they know better.
Just remember Millenials are the minority now. Listen and learn and do what you are asked if it is not illegal or immmoral. You can be replaced.

You actually think I give a chit about your narrow vision due to lack of life experience.
You've already got it figured out so go on with your know-it-all self.
