Very interesting. I could see this being the future of college FB stadiums, and possibly NFL as well. It is really a waste of money and space to spends hundreds of millions on a facility that sits empty and unused except for 8-10 times a year.
I could see renovating Death Valley or building a new 50,000-60,000 seat arena with features and uses similar to the NW arena. It could certainly serve multiple purposes and venues year round. It could produce much more revenue for Clemson and the community. The game day experience would be transformed into an all day entertainment experience. Offer specialty gormet on site dining, as well as many casual dining venues as well as various fast food locations. Parking garages, plenty of automated shuttle routes to different locations within the sports complex.

Is the idea to completely drive the students away? That's not my Clemson. I think there should be room for every student to have a seat. If they can't attend home games, how do you expect them to become loyal alums? I was proud to attend every home game and yell my head off. I know we lost a lot when they did away with rat season but let's not kill all the Clemson spirit.

I never understood why we don’t make DV way more accessible year round.
As for 50,000 in luxury seating, never! That would root out our base. Maybe for north Chicago, but not for little ole Clemson. .

I think that the Littlejohn renovation was somewhat botched. The original images showed an upper deck being pushed out over the lower bowl, which would have put more fans on top of the action and created a noisier, more suffocating atmosphere for visiting teams. I won’t claim to know the whole story, but they (D-Rad?) seem to have cheaped out.
I’ll poke around for some of those early images of the project.

I mostly agree with those responding have said. It may be more workable for a big town like Chicago whose fan base is more professional sports oriented, as opposed to Clemson, but I see in the future, as ticket prices and "seating licenses" increase, more people staying home and watching on TV. I was also struck by accommodations for the worse seats are the most expensive to build and produce the least amount of revenue. Of course ours are already built so that is not presently a factor.
I think the bottom line is that mega stadiums may eventually become dinosaurs. The Atlanta Braves stadium is more what I think sports venues may look like, if you have ever been there.

Comparing it with the Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta, MB has lots of stuff going on there - concerts, my daughters did cheer competition there, and the like I assume.
Here's the problem. Parking. I don't know how safe the area in the new stadium is, but I doubt folks are going to pay $20+ for parking, walk half a mile just to go get drinks.
A buddy of mine went to see Metallica earlier this summer at Mercedes Benz and paid over $200 for good parking because he doesn't want to walk a mile in the bad part of Atlanta.

Not sure what will transpire going forward, but I will say that except for the first 10 or so rows of the current upper decks, I’d much prefer watching at home to being that far away from the action.
I don’t think the Northwestern-style concept is really all luxury seating.
If I were to predict the future in general for CFB stadiums, IF current trends continue, the ticket prices will drive more fans toward staying home, and the smaller venues with generally better and closer sight lines may be required to provide an illusion of value for those fans that are willing to help pay for Lambos for 18 year-olds.

I think you nailed it. I don’t know what will happen, but I suspect you will no longer see these mega stadiums. Curious what they will do at the new RFK stadium in DC. I was originally part of the design team (not as the stadium architect) when Jack Kent Cook was going to build a new stadium before they moved out of DC. In a meeting with Cook, he said that he was going to have to “grease Marion Barry’s palm” with a million dollars to get the new stadium approved. Therefore he was looking at Virginia and Maryland for new locations. Therefore “new” RFK, at the time was going to cost about 350 million ……… peanuts for what they are spending now.

From a quick search, they have never exceded 47,500 ave attendance , as in never ever. That includes home game sellouts against marquee programs that travel well.
50k seats will not work at Clemson. 30k fewer fans would really hurt local buisnesses, die hard fans, and especially students.

With every game being on TV, colleges are saying they have to give the fans more than "just the football game" to entice them to come. There has to be "an experience." And, the experience has to be inside the stadium and during the game. they arefollowing the NFL model. More luxury seating, more enhanced "club level seating." Better food (including alcohol). Upgraded restrooms. Wider councourses under the stadium, wider aisles in the stadium. Better parking lots for the megabucks donors. Etc.
That means fewer seats that will cost a whole lot more. That means faithful fans (loyal boosters) will be priced out of the market.
FSU is going through it now. The renovation has reduced seating by 12,000. Decades old loyal boosters are having to decide if they will fork over much larger money to keep the seats they have now, or even significant more money and have their seats downgraded, or just give up their season tickets.
Understandably many fans are upset.
But, money drives the train. FSU is counting on the upgrade in the facilities will be enough to get enough fans to fork over the big bucks and significantly increase revenue.
Every stadium undergoes upgrades. Northwestern has just gone the next step.
