What have we gained by getting rid of Jack Leggett.
Are we better off or worse?

Don’t forget the final years of the Leggett era were pretty bad and the first couple years of Lee were actually very good until the regionals

Monte Lee did not improve things over Leggett

In fact, Lees last 3-4 seasons were a disaster.
Leggett missed being in regional participant only once in his entire time at Clemson.
Lee started strong with guys like Seth Beer, but then he gave us our first losing season since 1957! And he was not in a regional his last three seasons.
I’m not saying that Leggett was the answer. I’m just asking if we improved at all by running him off.
Because if you change coaches and still don’t improve, what’s the purpose.
It’s a valuable object lesson for our frustrated basketball fans.

I don't think it's remotely close to our basketball situation. Leggett won the conference multiple times, took us to multiple college World Series, won many regionals. Brownell has never done anything except win two NCAA tournament games. All of our opponents think Brownell is a joke. Nobody thought Jack Leggett was a joke.

… improve.
My point from the original post was that although we fired Jack Leggett, our baseball program did not improve.
It declined.
I’m not a fan of Brad Brownell. I’m a Clemson fan. I want to see Clemson excel at basketball.
If we fire Brad, we need to improve our situation. That’s why the Leggett saga is instructive for any future Brownell decision.

I love college baseball! We were always nationally relevant under Jack. He was a great coach. I miss those days! He recruited and developed very well! Khalil Greene was probably my favorite from those teams.

Leggetts teams got to postseason and stunk or underperformed. But at least we got to NCAAs every year and mostly supers. Now we just stink all year. Don’t want Leggett back but we definitely aren’t better off since.

Worse. Recruiting was turning a corner and his new facilities were coming on line. Then we gave them to a coot.

improvement. we aren't there yet but I see improvement.we are headed in the right direction.unlike with Jack. Losing Jack hurt in recruiting, he should have retired and stayed as an ambassador. He loved himself too much

While I’m a huge jack fan. I believe it was time for him to be gone. However the way it was done hurt. He should have had a lot of say on who came in. Glad he is apart again and it’s gonna come back better.

But still he wouldn’t have gotten us over the hump.
Still think it was the right move and Monte Lee wasn’t a bad hire at the time (obviously wasn’t so good in retrospect). Just didn’t work out.
Still think we should have gone “in house”. Leggett has a great coaching tree that we haven’t really tapped.

This is so true. It was the right move to change coaches. It's staff. A single coach can be made humble. We've cheaped out on some hires. Look no further than lsu women basketball as well as Rittman and our softball.. follow the blueprint Dabo has given us. You can't do it on the cheap. You have to identify and build a successful, respected staff.

Word at the time was that he had lost the locker room. His old-style coaching wasn't meshing well with the new-style players.

It wouldn't have been worse. On the other hand the program had begun to decline and I'm not sure Jack was expressing to his boss that he had a solution in mind.

Leggett just seemed to be on such a downward trajectory. Each year seemed to be getting worse than the previous.
I do believe he already had Seth Beer committed and Monte was able to keep him. But he also had Cal Raleigh who decommitted after Leggett was fired. Cal may have added enough star power to get the Beer teams over the top but our pitching was still not elite. Would have loved to see Raleigh and Beer on the same team.
