Worst game youve been in attendance for?

What’s the worst Clemson game that you’ve sat in the stands and watched, until the final whistle?
First couple that pop to mind for me are:
UGA @ Clemson - 2003. UGA walked into Death Valley and just absolutely obliterated Clemson 30-0.
Clemson @ Duke - 2004. I remember this one vividly. Clemson had just beaten Miami on the road in a thriller and was on a 4 game win streak. Made the road trip to Duke, along with a plethora of Clemson fans and watched that Bowden led team lay the biggest of eggs and lose on a 53 yard FG, that to this day, I swear would of been good from 65+.
VT @ Clemson - 2007. Both teams were ranked going into that game. Tyrod Taylor ran all over the field on Clemson that day and those annoying VT fans, with their darn Keys jingling was just the worst.
FSU @ Clemson - 2013. This one kind of speaks for itself. One of the biggest letdown games in Clemson history imo.

I completely forgot about this game, but you’re very correct in having this one up there.
I feel like sitting thru this game in the rain was worse than sitting thru the ND game in the hurricane, even though the conditions were worse for ND.
It also didn’t help how insanely kind and nice every TCU fan I came across was. Like, give me a reason to not like you. Don’t endear me to you lol.

I was at this game and remember it well because at the time, Kathleen Swinney didn't even sit in a box and she was a few rows in front of us. I think this game felt worse than the ND game because it was a low scoring game, we couldn't move the ball in the second half, and it felt like it got colder and colder as the day went on.

At UVA in ‘90, our first loss to them in 28 or 29 years .. cursed at, yelled at and laughed at … afterwards, found the car had been towed and had to walk in the rain to find it…all I heard was “Clemson go home” for miles as the UVA cars passed … my first and last game at UVA..

The absolute worst beating I watched clemson

Football take was the tangerine bowl vs textech.
I was at all the games you posted but none of those compare to the tangerine bowl. Texas tech physically beat the every living snott outta clemson.
People always claim the orange bowl vs wvu... but that was just a score fest. It was a Huge score but heck..nc state beat clemson By more points that same year.

we were in that game for a half and a freak play at the goal line completely changed it. But it was not a beat down from the first whistle like many games we have endured over the years.

When I saw this post, my mind came to this game. The Tangerine Bowl versus Texas Tech is by far the worst game that I have ever sat through in my entire life.
That bowl experience started out great. I had an awesome time at the Dueling Piano Bar where Clemson Fans had set up shop in the Downtown Disney area the night before. And the following morning/ day was great also. Between me and 2 other guys I think we dropped about $800 on food and drink at Margaritaville before going to the pre-game pep rally.
From that point on thought the fun stopped. Texas Tech absolute destroyed us. Charlie Whitehurst I dont believe finished the game, and I am pretty sure Willy Simmons refused to go in because of the beating the Texas Tech D gave Charlie that day.
I still have nightmares. There was a special needs kid in the Clemson section that just kept saying "Common Tommy" with either a "Coach those boys up", or "Get the team going" add on every 5 minutes the entire game. During the 2nd half it was all I could do to not say "Just Shut the Fx#4 Up". I feel bad about that because "he" (the kid) was being a great fan, but the combination of his shear naive optimism, getting the crap beat out of us, and being extremely hungover, etc. it was enough to pull your hair out. The drive home was a struggle. Tired, hungover, only the extreme anger of having been utterly de-pantsed and beat like a 4 year old over Gran-Daddys knee in that game got me back to Asheville to drop off my friends. I then had to drive another hour and half back to Lake Norman for Christmas Eve Service. Cant count how many red bulls were consumed to make it home that day. It is by far my worst Clemson football game experience.
The Texas Tech fans immortalized that beat down with this video.. https://youtu.be/R8RKJ9cP9BM
You can find that video by searching on Youtube, Clemson versus Texas Tech "Lay Down".......
There have been others that were bad. The game we lost to Wake Forest a few year later. Bowl game where I saw Antwan Edwards puking out of his helmet because he was still hungover from New Years eve. But Texas Tech was just such a beating... It was bad..
So how the start of the season had not been what I had hoped. Its not been that. I dont thnk 20 years from now i will say "I remember the time when...." regarding this season. But I will never forget the Texas Tech beating.

2013 FSU game, Game day, south carolina lost to butch jones earlier in the day, the atmosphere before the game was absolutely incredible, clemson tailgate lots were packed ALL day from morning leading up to it all, stadium was packed like 40 min till kickoff, and we got our butts absolutely handed to us.
Louisville game last year, stadium was absolutely dead. I had blue hairs scowling at me for cheering on defense when the game was still close, and it was a night game no less! That turned me on to how far our atmosphere has fallen. Too many wine and cheese crowds and blue hairs who don't like noise.
Go back to that 08' win against south carolina and you'll see hunting jackets all around the stadium, that certainly isn't the same anymore.
This past Syracuse game, had folks with me going to their first game and it was god awful hot, and I've never seen a crowd that nervous, and a team with absolutely no fight to them. It's one of the only games in my life I've ever left early, the rain delay made that decision easy. Why on earth would I make guests sit through the pouring rain and delays to watch spoiled millionaires with no fight?

I made a comment to my buddy sitting in the stadium last Saturday about the atmosphere.
You can just tell it feels different there now. I told him it felt like a Tommy Bowden atmosphere of not quite optimism but nervousness about what was about to happen.

Its been awful post COVID
Syracuse in 2018 is one of my favorite underrated games in terms of atmosphere. The crowd willed those boys to a win that day. 4th quarter the student section was sucking the ball into the endzone with every run and read option Brice had. Went crazy with the 4th and 6 dot that Chase threw, Place went nuts when he kept it and had a 15 yard run. Place went nuts for the go ahead TD and you could feel the ground shake when XT had THAT sack.

Didn't say bad fans but it ABSOLUTELY makes a difference in terms of noise and atmosphere. The rowdy working man/woman is far more passionate than the wine and cheese crowd who leave at the drop of a hat and don't want to "make a fool of themselves" getting too loud and rowdy.

FSU at Clemson 2013. I was a pledge that year. I'd worked all day. My student ticket was slated for the top row on the home side. By the time I'd gotten off of work and made it to the top FSU had already scored twice...
2nd worse was Clemson Pitt 2016. My friends and I were on the Hill. I remember us yelling at Todd McShay (this was when the parody videos were big) and saying "TODD" all at once and him turning around and waving haah. Anyways, when that field goal went in we all hung our heads and just sat on the hill for musta been 10 mins. Season was over. All of the hard work was out the drain... luckily enough everybody else with a pulse lost that weekend... and we had my favorite season ever.

I was a senior and it was only the second time I'd sat on the hill but I was on the hill against Pitt too and I remember thinking "it's over, the season is over" after the game, but several other teams lost that week and we barely dropped in the polls.
Pitt loss was immediately remedied by a 56-7 South Carolina butt whipping... what a great final game as a student.

TCU in 2009. Was miserable the entire game because of the rain. then Kyle Parker underthrew the crap out of a pass to a wide open Spiller. would have won the game but he had to stop running to catch it.
BC in 2007. Great game for any objective viewer, but as a Clemson fan I died a little inside when Aaron Kelly dropped that TD pass on the goal line. I thought that was our shot to take the next step. After I just thought that we would never get to the mountain top. little did I know that 9 short years later we would be there.
Maryland in 2006. just bad......

I had completely erased that BC game in my mind until you said something, so thanks for nothing lol.
But in all seriousness, I was sitting right there on the hill when that ball went thru Aaron Kelly’s arms.
I hate it because I thought Kelly was a really good Clemson WR and his legacy is mostly remembered for that one drop that would of sent us to the ACCG that year.

So many candidates, but these come to mind
2001 UNC - just absolutely pantsed by a mediocre UNC squad. 2009 TCU - monsooned upon and lost 2010 UofSC - just never even in that game at all, even though we did take an early lead 2011 GT - thought that Clemson team had something going and got worked by the nerds 2013 FSU - no description required unless you’re under the age of 21 or something

2003 Wake Forest game in Winston Salem. 45-17 I believe. Then best #3 FSU the very next week!!
Also, a loss to WF at home in the rain. Don’t remember the exact year but it was a Ken Hatfield special!!!

1996 Gator Bowl vs. Syracuse 41-0 and it was worse than that. McNabb lit us up. Everything that could go wrong, DID in that ballgame. The Toyota commercials on the big board were so loud; and we were getting whipped, I told my now wife I would never buy a Toyota. HAHA

Easy to feel a bit better about that one in hindsight with the NFL HOF talent that team had but a beat down like that will never feel okay, regardless of how many HOFers were on the field.

There was one Danny Ford game in 1987. Ranked number 7 and fell behind by 4 scores to NC State at the Valley. Tried to make a valiant comeback stand but ran out of time and loss 30-28. It was an inexplicable game for Danny. We also loss to NC State on the road in 1986 and 1988. 3× in a row. A frustrating opponent at the time.

The one that to this day grabs my innards was in September 1988,

when the Bobby Bowden led Seminoles pulled off that God-forsaken "Puntrooskie" play, followed by a FG to win the game 24-21.
Few, if any of us, in the stands knew what was happening until it happened, and when they made the field goal, I was literally sick to my stomach. I remember thinking, "Dammmmmm, we had the %*@%^ game won. We had it won!" Naturally, being the, ahem, gentleman that I am, I limited myself to only two minutes of cussing without repeating myself. But I wanted to go four......................lol.

Auburn in 1970 at home. Lost 44-0 to Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley.
Georgia at home in 1976. Lost 41-0 and it wasn’t that close.
Gator Bowl vs Pitt in 1977. Lost 34-3 to Matt Cavanaugh and Hugh Green. But it was Clemson’s first bowl game in my lifetime so there was that.

One of the biggest letdown games in Clemson history imo.

football.
And Syracuse 41, Clemson 0 in the Gator Bowl, 1996 (1995 season).
They interviewed the Cuse players after the game and asked what was the key to their success, and they said "Well heck, Clemson only brought four plays" or something to that effect.

For me
1) West Virginia Orange Bowl. The only bright spot was when my step daughter said that the gay WVU fan was so far in the closet that he was in Narnia. 2) I think it was the 2010 USC game. Froze my but off to see the Coots kick our butt at home. Only bright spot was thawing out when I got back to the car. 3) 2000 FSU game in Tallahassee. Weinke threw for almost 600 yards and we were run off the field. Bright spot would have been it was a nice trip other than the game. 4) 2013 FSU game. Not much to say there. 5) 2003 Georgia. Awful way to start a season.

I was at that Duke '04 game as well...
Sep 27, 2025, 11:05 PM
|

I worked at Duke in the Medical Center at the time and had talked MAD amounts of trash at work that week on the heels of beating Miami. The following Monday was... not easy.
The game @ Texas A&M would have to be up there as well. Took a flight out to SA and then drove up the game. Everything about the trip was great... except the three hours of the game itself! We just couldn't get out of our way.
I'll put an asterisk by this one since you said 'watched until the final whistle'... but '98 against Virginia Tech was particularly horrible. Hotter than the sun and they just beat the #### out of us. My roommate and I left sometime in the second half but if any of you mad lads watched the entire thing my hat is off to you.

That was the game Tommy Bowden said we were going to establish the running game. I think we averaged less than 1 yard per carry and didn’t come close to scoring all day. That was the hottest I’ve ever been at a football game, and perhaps in life.
Second place is the 54-7 loss to FSU in Tallahassee in 2000. We started out the year 8-0 and were really clocking. We lost a heartbreaker to Georgia Tech the week prior. I thought we were a really good team. FSU showed us we were not.
Third place is the loss to BC in Chestnut Hill in 2010. It was cold and rainy. Our offense was horrible despite having Spiller. Despite being a big Dabo supporter, I wasn’t sure that day that he could get it done.

Orange Bowl against West Virginia. I think it was Sports Illustrated that got a shot of my best friend with his head in his hands. I was just out of frame.
Clemson - Georgia Tech 2014 would be #2. We were big favorites. Deshaun got hurt. Stoudt was 3/11 for 19 yards with three interceptions. Lost 28-6.

I believe we lost to California about 33-0. It was ugly.

2003 Wake. Being down 45-0 to that mediocre team in their high school stadium was a tough night.
My dad took me to a single road game a few years in a row, so of course the next year we went to the Duke game and watched the Bowden Boys get beat by that bomb of a field goal.
Great thread. It’s fun to read through everyone else’s terrible memories; it’s a good reminder that this hilariously inept stretch won’t last forever.

1998: Loss against Georgia Tech. I remember absolutely nothing about this game, except this annoying snooty Georgia Tech #%%%# the row behind us shaking her mustard colored pompom screaming “Let’s Go Jac-KETS! Let’s Go Jac-KETS!” For 4 hours straight.
2002: Tangerine Bowl vs. Texas Tech. Never have I ever seen a team get physically mauled and outclassed like I did that night. I went with two friends and one of those friend’s dad on an extremely short trip from home to Orlando. We left late morning on Gameday, got there at the Game, stayedy during the beat down, left and stayed the night in a hotel, and then traveled in traffic for 12 hours back from Orlando to home on Christmas Eve. The entire trip was about 38 hours of rushed misery. This one is by far the worst!
2001: Virginia receiver throws down Clemson cornerback to catch TD pass on the final play of the game.
2001: Homecoming against UNC and Julius Peppers. We were never in that game. Julius Peppers jumped and deflected a pass about 10 yards from himself, landed and then ran the 10 yards to catch the ball diving. It’s one of the most athletic plays I’ve ever seen by anyone.
2001: against the Chickens. We lost 20-15 because our inept offense played like #### against an average Holtz team that didn’t want to lose 5 in a row and wanted their first win at home against Clemson since 1987. The chicken calling was almost as annoying as their trash fan base being who they are as we walked out after the game. Haven’t been back in the upside down cockroach for any game since. (Except my high school state championship game as a player in 2004.)
2003: Blanked by the Dawgs on a scorching August day. It was the day after my birthday. Thanks for not only a loss, but no points at all for my birthday, Tigers!
2004: Georgia Tech beats scores 14 in the final 90 seconds to beat us, even though we had a 10 point lead in the last 90seconds. The nerds score. Kickoff, and their defense holds and they use timeouts. All you need is a single first down, and they don’t get it. On the punt, the snapper snaps it 20-25 yards over the punter’s head and he has to recover it in the red zone with about 30 seconds left in the game. Calvin Johnson of Tech makes mincemeat of our CB on the winning TD play for them. It was a microcosm of football under Tammy Bowden that Thursday night.
2006: The game Bowden took the Ball out of Reggie Merriweather’s hand against SC. We lose on a missed kick after being up by 14.
2007: The Aaron Kelly Game vs BC. Enough said.
2008: Maryland Game. We dominate the first half against them, only to completely disappear in the second half and lose by 3. It was a fitting way to be my last game with Tammy Bowden.
2010: A win against Russell Wilson and NC State. We won 14-13 somehow against NC State and Russel Wilson. It was by far one of the most poorly played games I’ve ever seen.
2013: Crab legs and Free Shoes University embarrass us at home. I usually stay to the end of a game, but I left in the 3rd. It was like watching your girlfriend cheat on you in person.
2025: Troy Game. Me and a friend came from Florence to see 4 minutes, 11 plays, and a Troy TD. Oh, and Kluboot hang a receiver out to dry over the middle on a molasses pass. We needed to get back home so we didn’t come back in after the lightning delay. But in 4 minutes I saw the flattest, most uninspired Clemson team I’ve ever seen. They didn’t look like they wanted to be there at the top of the Hill. I remember thinking, “What is wrong with these kids?” as soon as I saw them. I’m honestly glad the Lightning Delay forced us to come home.

In Tallahassee in 2000 to watch FSU crush our boys 54-7! But we never leave early no matter what. Unlike a disturbing trend I see with Tiger nation lately!

I’ve never been to the Doak but it’s definitely one of the atmospheres I want to experience.
Whether it’s for a Clemson matchup or not.

His longevity in the league is insane.
The modern day Charlie Whitehurst except I think Taylor has been doing it longer at this point and for sure has gotten more PT throughout his career.

FSU game still stings for me the atmosphere was electric early, and then it just fell apart fast. I remember it being one of those nights where even my Detroit Tigers Black Leather Jacket couldn’t keep the chill off from how cold that loss felt. Easily one of the toughest to sit through till the end.

I guess I am the only one here that drove up to Blacksburg in 2006 riding an all time high after beating GT on Gameday. We took our 2nd drive right down the field for 7-0 lead and never scored again. Pretty sure Proctor threw for like 80 something yards that night. Absolutely miserable drive home.
