Words of Wisdom from Wylie Hamrick Class of 1950

In all of my 42 years of life I've learned a great deal. I came from a wealthy family, yet I live broke and poor today. However, I'm happier now than I ever was growing up with my family. Here's what I learned about wealth and generosity.

1. Man cannot serve both God and Mammon. We are to choose. We can use wealth to increase the joy and happiness in the lives of others, but wealth never guarantees happiness for the individual who holds it alone.

2. Wealth never guarantees power, but power will guarantee wealth. Power is not defined as a man's possessions, but rather his worth. Nothing, not even time will ever change that.

3. You'll only be as wealthy as your five closest friends. If you spend time with unlike minds you will end up poor just like them.

4. Money doesn't buy happiness, but I've never seen a depressed person on a Jet Ski and Jet Skis cost money.

5. The purpose of obtaining wealth isn't to own something, but rather to control everything.

6. Life is the only honest market. It will truly return a dividend based upon what you invest in it.

7. A virtuous woman is rare like a buried treasure. Should you find one, then you have found a life worth living. Never give your heart to a woman who treats you like an ordinary man.

Our country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any America because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.
