deshaun and woody

Sep 1, 2015, 10:35 AM

watson vs dantzler.

who you got?

i'll take woody and the dodge neon that he drove. not sure we will ever see speed like his again.

Woody was awesome, but

Sep 1, 2015, 10:37 AM

I'd have to take Watson for the arm.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Woody was definitely on the fore-front of the era

Sep 1, 2015, 10:37 AM

He was spectacular, but I don't know if anyone knew how to handle that type of QB at the time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sorry guys....

Sep 1, 2015, 11:04 AM

Woody was terrific and was one of the most natural runners I have ever seen at QB but... This is not even close. People try to compare Watson to "dual threat" QB's but that is an insult to Watson. Watson is athletic and a good runner but he shows the arm strength, accuracy, anticipation, and ability to read defenses needed to play at a high level in the NFL. Too many people look at stats to gauge QB's but that is not what NFL scouts and coaches care about. Winston didn't have nearly as good of a year as Marcus Mariotta, was much less athletic, and had a number character questions and still went #1 overall. Why? Not statistics, its about what you see on film. Winston displays outstanding accuracy and anticipation of throwing windows. He can read defenses and knows where to go with the ball based on alignment of the defense. Woody Danzler, Tajh Boyd, and Conner Shaw all put up good numbers but were marginally accurate and needed a coordinator on the sideline to tell them what the defense is doing and what play to run. Watson (if healthy) will be the greatest offensive player (if not of all positions) Clemson has ever had.

Most "Dual Threat" guys aren't actually dual threats

Sep 1, 2015, 11:44 AM

they're far more of a threat with their legs than with their arms.

A legitimate dual threat in my mind is a good quarterback who can also hurt you by running the ball, not a good runner who can also kind of throw the ball.

Re: Most "Dual Threat" guys aren't actually dual threats

Sep 1, 2015, 11:50 AM

I agree 100% with that statement!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Woody had a 2k/1k year

Sep 1, 2015, 11:50 AM [ in reply to Most "Dual Threat" guys aren't actually dual threats ]

which is pretty impressive. 2k throwing and 1k running. There again, I don't think anyone new how to defend that.

Re: Woody had a 2k/1k year

Sep 1, 2015, 11:57 AM

I am not saying that Woody wasn't good in fact I loved Woody! He was one of the first guys to run the spread offense as a running QB. That scheme in college creates open lanes and reduces the need for QB's to think or read. It makes great athletes like the Nick Marshall able to play QB but you see that he doesn't even play QB any more. He had good arm strength and great athleticism but was not very accurate nor could he do any of the other things an NFL QB would need to do. The scheme just isn't as successful in the NFL because the defenses are better and the windows are much tighter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm with you...

Sep 1, 2015, 12:02 PM

there are bunches of QB's that were super successful in a certain type of system but didn't do nearly as well in the NFL. I do think that Watson's arm strength and accuracy may allow him to go to the NFL and have an opportunity to compete.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Woody was great for us at the time, don't get me wrong

Sep 1, 2015, 12:10 PM [ in reply to Woody had a 2k/1k year ]

and I will always love the memories of him in the orange and white. Woody was a great athlete and a really good football player despite his small size, but as a quarterback I don't think he's in the top 3 for my lifetime.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i'll defer with "too early"

Sep 1, 2015, 10:49 AM

we all expect dw to leave clemson as our "best qb in history", but after only 5 or 6 games, i'm not gonna diss woody..if anybody nees a woody wake-up, :), i refer to our 2001 game against georgia tech..and suggest following that with the following week against nc state at dv..woody was de man.

Re: i'll defer with "too early"

What would've Woody done with the talent that we have now. He may have broken a lot of records that would still be standing even after DW leaves. I think this is the most exciting time in Clemson Football. Go Tigers lets start a run that makes the rest look miniscule.

Re: i'll defer with "too early"

Sep 1, 2015, 11:15 AM

you can almost pick your qb and say the same things with talent we have now. Face it, you can't compare QB's of one era to another, or wing-t vs I vs proset vs spread. They are too different

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The difference between these college QB's...

Sep 1, 2015, 11:37 AM

who put up ridiculous numbers and true NFL caliber QB's has nothing to do with stats. I challenge you to go compare the film between Woody and Watson. I am not talking about yards and TD's. I am talking about breakdown the each throw and the circumstances of the play and you will see that as a thrower its not close. There are 30 something people in the entire world that can throw a ball under pressure with the accuracy that DW can. I am including the NFL. Difference is that when DW throws the ball he can place the ball where he wants it. The WR will rarely need to make adjustments to the ball. He was also 81% completion against the blitz last year. Why? because he sees the blitz and knows (based on alignment) which receiver will be uncovered or will be left one one. Not many QB's do that themselves in todays spread offenses. The spread reduces the burden on the QB and transfers that to the coaches which makes it easier to find a QB who can operate the system. They don't actually read defenses which makes it easier and is why they put up ridiculous numbers but never get a sniff in the NFL. Their are many "Heisman" QB's in the country this year that fall into that category. Deshaun is different and we are lucky to have such a special player and person. Hopefully he will stay healthy and everyone will see how good he is when he wins the Heisman and goes in the top 5 in the draft.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are we talking about taking them to start an NFL franchise

Sep 1, 2015, 12:09 PM

though or as a college QB? What kind of system?

Like you, i would favor Watson because i think his throwing ability would allow him to succeed in pretty much any setting, but there are also situations where Woody could be just as effective. He was money in RRod's offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

precisely..nfl has nada que hacer con college***

Do you remember Woody's first play...against who..?

Sep 1, 2015, 5:37 PM

I think I am right, but Woody's first game as a Tiger was against Furman after the game was out of reach. His first six or seven snaps, he took the snap and ran the ball into the right side of the line. I think he averaged about two or three yards per carry, and certainly was no indication of what Woody would turn into. Later on, there is no one I would rather have with the ball in his hand when we had a fourth and three or fourth and four with the game on the line!!!

Woody this year, Watson next year. Too early. Course, you can't forget Homer Jordan.
Watson's great....so far. It's a little early to crown him Emperor.
