Short answer.....yes. People do care.
Plus, the leaders havent even teed off. People would rather watch Tiger at plus 10 instead off Webb Simpson and the like at +5.

Exactly! Because on any given shot tiger could do something brilliant.

On any given shot he could do something that only a handful of people that have ever played the game can do and people are just waiting for that moment when he does something that shows why he is the best that has ever played the game.

The fact that he even played much less put up a competitive number in the first round is a miracle.

It was pretty predictable that each day he would probably get worse due to fatigue and his leg. No one thought he would be where he is today. He already has comeback player of the year wrapped up plus any other awards for spirit competitiveness etc.
People like you have no idea how big of an impact Tiger Woods made to the game of golf. There are 125 players on the PGA tour each year with full playing privileges. They are the top 125 money earners from the year before. Go look at how much money player 125 Made the year before Tiger Woods joined the PGA. Then look at how much money player 125 made five years after Tiger joined the tour. That will show you the impact on the audience and on sponsorships for the PGA because of one guy becoming a professional golfer. It’s crazy!

Well my guess is the fact he is even playing a full 4 rounds

Is nothing short of a miracle and unfathomable. He literally almost died, and then he literally almost had his leg amputated, they said it was 15 hours of surgery to save the leg and most people would have been amputated. Then in order to heal he couldn’t move from the same hospital bed for 3 months, even with all his money and resources.
Him teeing off and even hitting one drive in the tournament was an amazing feat and unthinkable a year ago. So a long winded way of saying yea, there is that much interest, it’s been an amazing comeback, regardless how he plays or shoots, he should have never been able to play golf again, let alone this fast.

on interest in the PGA Tour to the point that nearly every tournament has a first prize purse in excess of a million bucks. And, every tournament makes far more money from attendance, TV broadcasts draw far more viewers, and the tour can demand far more money from sponsors due to him. You can like him or hate him, but those are verifiable FACTS.

Yes, there is definite interest in him. The man is a legend who came close to losing a leg and has had the willpower to train and play through agonizing pain. Whether you like him or not, that is quite an accomplishment. There is plenty of time for the leaders as Tiger finished early in the round.
