With players opting out of bowls, entering the portal,...

Dec 10, 2022, 1:03 PM

.... some teams look nothing like they did in the regular season.

Time to take my suggestion seriously.

Move the bowl games to August. Let them serve as the opening game of the season. Play the minor bowls starting in mid-August and the major bowls on Labor Day Weekend.

Imagine if Labor Day had the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl and Orange Bowls. Sugar could have Pac 12 champ vs. Big ten champ whether or not either of them made the playoffs last year.

Let the season end with the conference championship games. Let the guys enter the portal or declare early for NFL.

Start the next year with big games not a bunch of Big State U playing SW Roast Beef State.

Teams that don't make a bowl can schedule a game with another team that didn't make a bowl. aTm could open with Rutgers.

And what? Leave the bowl selection up to the preseason media polls and how good they perceive each is team before even seeing them play? No thank you.

Every year teams (mostly SEC) are overhyped.

Yea. If they did that you might end up with a USuC/ND match up.

Bret I get what you are saying. But it still ends up the same. Teams will look different next year also. Same result. Maybe even worse.

It’s a holiday tradition I just think needs to stay the way it is.

Like the idea re: fan interest. Much higher chance of fans traveling to a mid-tier bowl when they’ve been waiting all spring and summer to see their teams.

That said, we live in a world where the arrogance of the Rose Bowl insisting on being played with a picturesque sundown on Jan 1st almost derailed the entire system of playoff expansion. At the current pace of change, I’d say we’re in for at least a century of pondering, pandering, and hand wringing before the almighty Rose Bowl shifts to August.

Whoever is in charge of this cluster f should make the Rose take the rop PAC 12 and top Bic 10 and cut them out of the Championship Scarew the Rose Bowl. And drop into the Pacific.

If i coached a lower level bowl i would use it as a preseason game for next year by playing younger players or expected starters for the following year.

I like the idea but does it matter with a 12 team playoff? Kind of similar to what the do with the Chick-fil-A kickoff

FWIW you'd think being in a NY6 Game would keep players available but after the last couple years, I agree the best move for bowls would be to move to the beginning of the year and cap with Labor Day Weekend games.

At least we'd get to see some intriguing matchups between squads at presumed full strength vs what the reality is now of opt outs and the portal.

Maybe they make this move in the next year. I used to enjoy bowl season but the reality is it has gone downhill both in expected (playoffs) and unexpected ways (portal and opt outs).
