Undefeated P5 teams by week over the past few years

I hope this comes out okay. I wanted to take a look at the trend by week for the number of Power 5 teams that are undefeated each week. I thought it would be interesting to see the historical attrition over time. I used the AP Poll. I started at week 5 because there are too many teams early on. Week 15 is the week after the conference championship games. The is not another poll until after the CFP is complete. I didn't look at undefeated Group of 5 teams because the reality is, they aren't a factor in the CFB. I may have missed a few that were undefeated but not in the top 25.
BLUF: We have slightly more undefeated teams now than the average year. I'm betting we'll be down to 3-4 teams by week 12. Ohio State and Wisconsin meet in 2 weeks (week 10) and Bama v LSU 2 weeks after that in week 12.
Just keep winning.

Seriously. It seems like every year we keep saying the same thing but every year there are people on here around week 6 still saying, “what happens when there are 5 undefeated teams?!”

Yeah, anyone who says there will be 5 undefeated P5 teams is a moron. Won't happen. Three last year was rare only because ND was undefeated. It was eye opening to see the AP history though. We have forgotten that there was a time Mississippi State was ranked #1 and Ole Miss #3. The Canes were ranked above Clemson. UNC was a top 10 team. VT was a player in the polls. FSU undefeated and dropped after a win (sound familiar?). Tennessee was undefeated deep into the season.
College football is crazy. That's why we enjoy it. Take a deep breath and tune out the idiots that make emotional statements so you click on their website. It will all sort itself and the contenders will separate from the pretenders eventually.
There's a lot of losing left to be done. I bet there are two team that are no longer undefeated after this weekend.

Last time we had three undefeated teams was 2004: USC, Auburn, Utah. Utah was coached by Urban Meyer, who then went on to Florida.

The last time we had three undefeated teams at the end of the regular season was last year: Clemson, ND and bama.

What is amazing is the consistent 20% drop week over week between weeks 5 and 12 and then a flattening from that point out when there are only 2 teams left.

You had to go undefeated to make it to the championship. One loss put you in serious jeopardy.
That put a lot of pressure on teams and many would choke.
The new CFP system gives a lot more room for error. A one loss conference champ still has a great chance of making the CFP.
I expect there to be (on average) more undefeated teams from this point forward.

Aren't we already guaranteed to have less than 5 undefeated P5?

ND has a loss, everyone in the pac 12 has a loss, and it's impossible for any of the other conferences to produce more than one.
