We're leading by a TD with 4:29 left, they're facing 3rd & long, and the QB drops back to the end zone.

We're in a total prevent defense of course, dropping 7 into coverage. So far, so good. But we let this ham-fisted oaf just cruise down the middle uncovered. He didn't make a move, he didn't juke anybody, he didn't do anything. I looked him up. He was the #1,161 player in the country and the #117 LB in the 2022 class. He picked Duke over Austin Peay, Dartmouth, Bill & Mary, Holy Cross.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7. Yep I count 7 defenders. This is why we lost.

That one is squarely on the linebackers they just let him run through untouched and no one went with the TE…Woodaz’s fault in particular, I believe!

Lesseee … our Safeties don’t know where to go or when to start going there. It’s all in Mickey Conn, right?
Uhhh, no.
Our LBs p, who are no only not coached by M.Conn but … unlike our Safeties … have either OK experience (S.Brown) or extensive experience (W.Woodaz). Yet, these guys don’t know where to go or when to start going there.
So, now it’s both the Safeties (not necessarily on this play, but plenty of other evidence throughout the season that they don’t know what to do) -and- LBs that are the problem.
All Conn’s fault because he’s the mastermind for passing game defense?
Maybe the guy who complains that our defensive players are not fast enough … yeah, that’s it. That’s the ticket … are to blame for not knowing where to go or when to start going there.
Gheesh. Will it be end of the year before we bury the Tom Allen mistake? Or maybe sooner. Like tonight.

I am dumbfounded by T.J. Parker dropping into he flat when there was no boundary receiver and covered a big patch of grass, leading to a conversion with an open passing lane over the middle. We could go on, but some serious communication issues are coming from the sideline, it is like our linebackers and safeties do not know the correct play.

He might as well drop in the flat, because we already know he is not going to put any pressure on the passer.

Lawson is outshining both TJ Parker and Heldt.
Although not in the same galaxy as Lawson, Parker, and Heldt, we’ve gotten not-bad play from Cade Denhoff this year. CD has always been very fast. His problem had always been getting devoured by O-linemen once they got their hands on him. CD is actually escaping the grasp of opposing O-linemen in occassion this year. This has helped our DE unit overall by allowing our top 3 guys to get a bit of a breather.
(*). Our DE unit, despite TJ Parker’s disappointing year, is clearly better than last year’s DE unit.
^^^^ this ^^^^ is where my biggest beef is with Tom Allen.
When our DEs are out of position, it’s neither a talent nor experience problem. Our DE coach is the same guy. Was there a key coaching change somewhere in our defense? Hmmm … thinking …thinking …

Pretty bad and typical of our defense this year. Tom Allen has turned out to be a bad hire. Dabo needs to admit he made a mistake by hiring him and let him go at end of season, along with about 35 other coaches and staff.

A field goal there and the game is over. We went three and out instead. I believe we had scored on the three previous possessions. No killer instinct. No complimentary football.
What also sucks is we punted and dook started on the 3 and went 97 yards in their longest drive of the game to score and then go for and get the winning 2 point conversion.
The team & program are a dumpster fire. It’s really sad and it’s 110%, all in on CDS.

This is where I thought we reverted back to our old ways. On 3 rd down we should have thrown at least get a first down if completed but throw a short pass to a receiver doubled covered, Go get 3 or 7 here and the game is over. As well as our O played they lost their rhythm on this drive. The O could have put this game away but left in the hands of T Allen defense they did not get it done.

Exactly! I agree. On our last possession, 3rd down, per the radio description, Cade threw a sideways pass to 0 AW, when we had about 3rd and 8. Terrible play call.
IMO, Dabo is still in his old frame of mind. He thinks if his team can get a lead in the last half of the 4th quarter, his "D" will close-out the game. Hasn't worked this season and will not. LSU scored late; Tech scored late; SMU drove and scored late to nail the coffin closed. And Duke scored late because Dabo chose to run safe plays, when we had the ball, after we got near midfield, and then to punt (to the 6 yard line). Duke calmly drove 94 yards, with some referee help. Ball game. I was scared from the moment that we kicked a field goal instead of going for a TD. Instead of letting our offense win the game, Dabo turned the game over to the "D" to lose, IMO.

Yep I agree! As soon as we had to settle for a field goal I knew we were in trouble because we hadn’t been stopping them on offense the entire game. We were lucky when we actually did stop them and held them to a field goal. I didn’t think we could do that.

A 2 pt conversion is the same type of play as attempting a 4th down conversion. Duke did not run unique or ‘trick’ plays for any of their 4th down conversions. Nor did they do so on their game winning 2 pt conversion.
Clemson does not have good enough X’s and O’s coaches to figure out how to reliable convert 4th downs or to stop opposing teams’ 4th downs. At least, this has been the case since after the LSU and GA Tech losses.
Since the GA Tech loss, there has been film on Clemson’s tendencies on both offense and defense with respect to 4th down conversions. Our opponents have figured out what we do and have made adjustments accordingly.
Clemson coaches have not figured out how to make adjustments.

In cover 2, that safety at the top of the screen in the lower screenshot should be on the hash when the ball is in the left hash. Why is he no way he should commit to the boundary that far. If anything it’s a straight slow back petal on the hash exactly where the right end is catching the call…it should never be that easy to fit in a pass over the LB drops and in front of the safety. This was a safety issue not a linebacker. Sure - Sammy could have had a deeper drop on cover 2 but it wouldn’t have prevented the catch here
