Run the ball, get the first down then take the shots down field. You can take 3 of them instead of 1.

We do the exact opposite of what should be done in an attempt for it to work 1% of the time.

That play design is called an RPO (run pass option). The QB has 3 options. Had the ball off to tge DB. Keep the ball himself and run it. Or pass the ball. The QB usually reads the linebacker or safety depending on how the defense is lined up. The correct read on that play should have been for DJ to keep it and pick up tge first down. The play was there. The receiver wasn't open. Especially with a bad throw like that.
