why the hatred toward the "woohoo"?

Sep 25, 2012, 10:27 AM

serious question...When I became a Clemson student it was already a part of the cheer.

... which I'm assuming was that it wasn't around when you were in school...

Younger Alums and current students like it, because it's what they always done. It's THEIR tradition.

I for example, cant remember a time in my life where the woohoo wasn't included (and my first football game was a 2 years old. I also have a crappy memory, so it may have been added later than that.... regardless, my highschool and college days, there was always a wohooo. It's our tradition. Not saying its not tacky or silly-sounding, but its the tradition that I grew up knowing.

And lets be honest it could be worse (SEC!! SEC!! or Woooooo PIG SUEEEEEEY)

Something that was great was changed for some reason. It was not part of our traditional fight song and so I don't like changing a great Clemson Tradition. Besides is sounds stupid. I never do the Woo Hoo!

Re: why the hatred toward the "woohoo"? Asking

Sep 25, 2012, 10:48 AM [ in reply to Re: why the hatred toward the "woohoo"? Asking ]

I've never been one to keep with tradition strictly for tradition's sake. If a woman wanted to wear a different colored (though still classy and elegant) dress on her wedding day, I wouldn't be bothered.

That said, if you're going to mess with tradition, you should improve upon it, or at the very least, don't do anything to make it worse.

The WooHoo doesn't improve the traditional cheer, it makes it worse. To extend the wedding analogy above, it wouldn't be like wearing a dress of a different color, it would be more like showing up to the altar in WonderWoman Underoos.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We weren't doing it in the late '90's when I was there.

Sep 25, 2012, 10:39 AM

I can remember going to a game somewhere between '00 and '02 with a coot buddy of mine. The band struck up the Tiger Rag, and there it was. I honestly did not know what to think. He and I just looked at each other with confused looks on our faces, I shrugged, and he busted out laughing.

The woohoo is ridiculous. It embarasses me every single time I hear it.

Sep 25, 2012, 10:50 AM [ in reply to Re: We weren't doing it in the late '90's when I was there. ]

The point is it's not traditional and serves no purpose besides injecting the ghey into our football program.

After all, the era of "Clemson pulling a Clemson" began when we start woo-hooing.

When it started (sometime in the '90s) - I instantly thought it sounded like a bunch of high school girls WooHoo-ing. Plus, it was marring our beloved Tiger Rag! I have seen/heard opposing fans openly laughing at it. It started at about the same time that Clemson football started it's decline. I associate nothing good with it.

Long before I ever got on TNet, I was cringing everytime I heard the WooHoo.

It's not a generational gap thing either as it says nothing FOR Clemson, it's just girly noise. It's almost like giving back a little momentum to the other team after we score or make a big play due to its very high gheyness quotient.

Re: why the hatred toward the "woohoo"?

Sep 25, 2012, 1:19 PM

because in college football, home team advantage is huge and there is something about 80,000 woo-hooing in what is supposed to be a war-like atmosphere. To me, the woo hoo removes (or has removed) the intimidation factor from the Valley.

for example...take FSU's tomahawk chop and warchant. Replace the warchant with the woo-hoo and imagine how different the atmosphere would be
