Each ref is equipped with a shock collar. You make a bad call, the entire crew gets shocked

Including linemen downfield, most illegal formation penalties, etc. Cut penalty "policy and procedures book" in half.

Unrealistic. It would make every game 8 hours long.

Why stop with imperfect refs, eliminate the mistake prone players as well...

there's enough technology to completely get rid of them all. No more idiot passes into double coverage, no more putting the ball on the ground inside the 10, the list is limitless of all the stupid plays that could be forever driven from the game.
Could you imagine this AI making perfect play after perfect play? Both sides of the ball would be immaculate.

It would bring special meaning to "Twins Right" and completely shatter the sex barrier of womens playing American Gridiron with the mens.
Logic can take you from A to B, but Imagination can take you anywhere.

When growing up in my sandlot --> getting enough 10-14 age kids together for a game was hard, so we would let Janice play. That made the game better as all wanted to tackle her, or be tackled by her.

Logic? How about the MLB’s logic on new automatic strike zones? Changing rules each year to stop the terrible officiating
Rule changes are an external variable and are external to the players’ actions
Bad plays and player performance are an outcome of the game itself. influenced by factors like fatigue, opponent actions, coaching, and even the pressure created by potentially controversial calls (the external)
Bad plays will always exist as a part of the sport

Rules are as much if not more the game than the imperfect players & refs, though

the refs maintain the rules, which in turn is the game as defined by the good book. The players attempt to play within the rules, unfortunately and too often, they fail miserably.
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure your judgement can be trusted as in one breath you rally to imperfection yet in another, you lobby against it and in no less certain terms than eradication.
Hyperbole aside, it's all part & parcel of the game, created by the game, a natural result of the game, its speed, complexity & humanity.
It does seem though that some just like to complain about certain aspects of the game more so than others, but that's likely very much personal and might be a result of something as simple as a lost bet, which is far less a part of the game, if a part at all.

Nah, just the opposite. Get rid of all replay. All it does is slow everything

down and destroy the rhythm of the game. They spend 12 mins reviewing replay nanosecond-freeze-frames from 4 different angles to see if his toe brushed the chalk on the sideline. And then they still get it wrong many times, apparently. Because fans of both teams will post the exact same pics to "prove" they got robbed. So it resolved nothing. Just let the refs call the game and let's keep playing.
I can see how technology helps some sports like tennis, the serve either hit the line or it didn't. And the verdict is quick, doesn't disrupt play.
I see MLB is edging towards using strike zone technology... jeez, where's the fun in that? I think about half of Greg Maddux's called strikes were 6 to 8 inches off the plate. LOL

his team in the 60s or 70s. It was in a Sports Illustrated article. The players and even the assistant coaches were complaining about a couple of questionable calls in a close loss. He went around the room pointing at players - "You missed the front end of two one-and-ones at a crucial point in the game. And you let a smaller man get better position and out-rebound you all night long. And you had almost as many turnovers as assists. And you took bad shots and hit less than 50% from the field. And you were lazy on defense and let them get get easy fast break points. But you want to blame the refs for 2 plays that they may have missed? I never want to hear anybody on this team try to blame the refs again."
That has always stuck with me. Blaming the refs is always the weak sauce of the losing team.
edit: of course I'm quoting him the best I can from memory... but you get the point.

They tried allowing PI to be reviewed in the NFL, lasted one season, remember that disaster? More replays aren’t the answer, refs are going to make mistakes just like players do. It sucks when it’s one that doesn’t go our way but it’s part of the game

Make them full time employees of the conference instead of working normal jobs in the week and hopping on planes Friday to go to these games. During the week they can study film, practice calling a game, get a better understanding of the rules and how they are meant to be implemented. As much money that college football has turned into there is no reason these people shouldn't be full time employee's of the conference.

They shouldn't be employed by the conference at all. Referees should be a national pool, employed by the NCAA, and graded weekly to determine who gets the best assignments.
Those with recurring bad calls should be coached and held accountable.

Elevated stress, excitement, and anxiety from the event, could mimic physiological responses to deception and lead to some definite false positives.

Tie call accuracy (determined by a board of refs) to pay. You make better calls more consistently, you get paid more.

If there was a play in question we would look toward this guy nicknamed "Tiny", and for some reason he was always right and we didn't argue about it. We just played on.
