Why Not WV to the ACC?

Given the options to gain revenue at hand or lack thereof. As imperfect an idea as it is would it not be beneficial financially?

A regional fit, for sure. Maybe that could also help the ACC work a better TV contract if they could add WV and some other school.

When WVU to the ACC has surfaced in the past, academics have been the issue.

Louisville. We let them in. They are a glorified community college Think WV would be a great fit. Then force Notre Dame in or out.

Sadly, academics seem to be phasing out within the current state of college athletics. WVU is below Louisville according to USNews, but not by all that much.

just blindsided us and we needed someone with some reputable program to make a statement that the ACC was here to stay. Louisville fit the bill.
Given a calm review of our options for expansion, on our timeline, I don't know that Louisville would have been considered because their academic reputation was (and remains) well below all other ACC institutions. The fact that we let them in will not necessarily open the flood gates to any and all schools of lower academic prestige.
This is not to say that I agree or disagree with this criteria. If expansion happens (and...bleh...), then I really think the ACC will give Notre Dame a large voice in who that is...IF they will also commit to full membership. That could easily mean Navy, assuming no Big Ten teams want to leave (which is what I assume). But I would welcome WV and some of the natural rivalries, both geographically and through their Big East heritage.

Missed our opportunity with Cincinnati - very similar to ACC schools, built-in rivalry with Louisville, excellent football and basketball, great academics (Law and Med), big TV market - - and hates OSU. Woulda, coulda, shoulda!

I know it was said in the past that academics was the issue, but it is more so the tiny population and scant TV viewers they would bring.

Just like all these other trash programs we have added over the years. Its already a league full of nobodys and has-beens. These mid-major turd programs like Cinci have a flash in the pan season and some of you are all ADD THEM ADD THEM!!! Its insane.

Under the current model, likely no. West Virginia does not have a large enough TV market to add significant revenue to the TV contract.

Something else to think about--money

The ACC is already behind other conferences money-wise. Unless a new deal can be brokered, I don't see how the ACC can afford to split the money with another school. Thanks to Swofford, our minuscule TV contract runs through 2036.

The TV market brought by WVA is insignificant plus already covered in part by VT and Pitt. So adding WVA would simply divide the current revenue by one extra team thus reducing the current payout. Unfortunately there is no clear way to to increase the revenue stream short of breaking the contract with ESPN and getting a streaming service (netflix or amazon or hulu or Apple TV or other) to pay for the content by setting up a separate channel for the ACC. Swoffie screwed us by being late to the party and then locking in on a bad deal for years.

I think Memphis is worth a look too. I thought the Memphis area has always been a hotbed for football recruiting and it would expand the ACC into an SEC state and all those growing markets in Tenn. like Knoxville,Nashville and Memphis. WVU would add some great rivalry games to the TV inventory though and that's exactly what the ACC needs.

I would love it. Though not necessarily a great TV market, they are a passionate fan base that makes for great television, and it seems like that's more of what networks are looking for these days over simply adding subscriber bases. The Pitt / WV Backyard Brawl was another great rivalry game lost to expansion, and Va Tech and WV would add some needed sizzle to our annual league offerings. I would trade Louisville for WV in a heartbeat if that's what it took. Louisville would likely be better off in the Big XII considering their proximity to many of the programs incoming there, and I believe the ACC would be better off with WV in their place.

out pay for play, at least for some of the top players. And, I never did buy the academic crap as a reason to keep them out. Are we afraid they will infect our schools with stupidity all the way from West Virginia? If it were that easy, Clemson would have been doomed years ago, given our proximity to Cooterville.

WVU would be a great addition to the conference. I’d bet anyone $100:that there are more eyes watching West Virginia football on a Saturday afternoon than there are Boston College football fans watching. Saying it gets you in the Boston market is absurd as you can basically watch any game across the country at anytime in 2022. The league should have focused more on the south and went W. Virginia and Cen. Florida.
Having said that, Clemson and FSU should have joined the SEC back in 1992.

Conference expansion is passe at this point. There are larger shake-ups on the horizon. Besides the $ec already proved you gotta be careful about additions-soon that conference will run through Texas given sheer nil dollars to be had. Even Saban has figured that out
