Or maybe i missed it and if i did i apologize….
But i feel like it’s a BIG deal that Tom Allen will be up in the box and not down on the field.
I think one of the key reasons Brent Venables has awesome offenses was his electric energy down on the field.
What does everyone else think of this?

I thought it was odd as well. Who will be leading the troops on the sideline?

Isn't Reed the Asst HC or something like that? I wondered who would be calling in the plays also. I would be surprised if it's a 1st yr coach, BB, calling in the plays.

If so, I'll take it. Dude's got fire and passion and KNOWS the schemes. Light years ahead of the Pillsbury Doughboy previously on the sideline. Allens up high and Boulware prowling and barking below? I'll take it! Go Tigers!! Beat the tigers!

I wasnt a fan when I heard this either. Seems like it would be easy for everyone to revert to the casual attitudes that got us ran all over last season without his foot up their ###. Guess we will see.

Seriously doubt there are casual attitudes this season. TA will not allow that. Neither will Dabo.... No Kool-Aid. Go Tigers!!

He has been coaching a long time. He has been a very successful DC. If he sees the game better and feels more comfortable in the box, that’s what he should do.

Because it's a non-issue. I would think he knows way more about coaching and what's best for the defense than fans.

Yeah he does, and nobody is saying anything different. People did notice the difference with team intensity with Pork Chop on the sidelines compared with Venables all fired up with th3 Het Back Guy. Tom Allen is intense, so do the math. They are wondering about bringing that intensity back to the sidelines. Who is going to bring it?

It’s been said you literally could not understand him on the headset trying to call plays he screams so much. Probably why he got put in the booth at Penn state and will be here as well. I assume both his son and Ben will be on the sideline

...being on the sidelines didn't help Pork chop 🥩.
Tom Allen's defense's were pretty stout at Penn State...and he was in the box.
Different style...but similar results to Brent Venables.

He was only at PSU for one year and had probably the most talented defense in the country to work with. Even puddin looked good the first year after BV left with the talent he had

I understand in many ways Allen is being seen as BV 2.0, and in many ways the two are very similar. But I don’t think gameday sideline intensity is the only mark of a great DC. The DC needs to be able to identify patterns in the opposing offense and weaknesses in our D. For those of you who have seen enough live games you know to really see the plays develop you need to be 20-30 rows up or more, after all there’s a reason the press box is mid stadium and not feild side like in basketball. So if TA feels the place he can bring the biggest positive impact on our play calling is in the booth, then I trust his long career of experience to make that decision himself.
As for the comments on effort and intensity on the sidelines, that is not only a product of gameday intensity shown by a coach like we loved to see from BV. No, that culture of intensity, accountability, commitment, and effort is built on the practice field, and if you’ve been following the practice reports this offseason you know TA has come a long way in rebuilding that culture already. As Coach Batson’s famous 4Q video reminds us, “you win championships when the band ain’t playing, when the cheerleaders ain’t cheering…”
I can’t wait to see the new defense in 20 days, spot the ball!

He will be able to se the field and what the opposing offense is doing more clearly. I’ve always thought the OC and DC should always be in the box.

No one is talking about it because there is no clear evidence that a DC on the field has more success than a DC in the PB. It is the personal preference of the DC to be in whichever location they feel most comfortable

Or does this only apply to DC's?

I was surprised when I heard he would be in the box. As you said, I feel like his energy would be a big plus on the sideline. The good thing is Boulware should be on the field and he provides tons of energy. Go Tigers!

He's not Venables and I don't think he need to emulate him, let's let him cook his own way and judge him on the results, not where he's located in the stadium.
