Why is the depth at RB so bad?

2

Dec 8, 2024, 8:04 AM

Running back is a position that gets banged up frequently and requires a stable of viable options. The lack of depth at this position is concerning. Watching Mafah play hurt the last few weeks with no real back up option is frustrating. Need to grab a few backs in the portal so we don’t get in this situation again.

It's especially odd considering our coaches obsession with playing backups so they are ready later in the season. For some reason none of that has applied to the RB position this year. It's Mafah or bust.

Agreed. I’m not sure why they thought just riding Mafah all year was a sound decision. It was all but a certainty he was going to break down. Poor roster management by Dabo.

Our RB depth is good, but we just don’t play them because we are scared they will fumble or miss a blocking assignment and get our quarterback hurt. The portal is not always the answer sometimes we just have to play our youngsters and hope for the best and trust that we have coached them up.

I disagree that the depth is good. If it was good I’m sure we would have seen some of these kids. We tend to play a lot of kids through the season and we didn’t see any of these kids during the season. IF they are good then that’s a major indictment on the staff for playing an injured Mafah like they did. The evidence suggests that the depth was just poor.

The depth is not bad, lack of development and confidence in the backups is poor

I'm not sure who to agree with. I tend to think that our running back usage mirrors our second half offense. Though the backups have some talent, we are more worried about making mistakes than making plays.

If our depth was genuinely "good" as you claim, we wouldn't see Mafah carry the rock the entire game.

The unwillingness to put the other RBs in indicates lack of confidence. Coaches have to see Mafah is hurt and unproductive. As another poster noted, maybe they are afraid of fumbles or missed blocking assingments. But, Mafah missed quite a few blocks last night. It might be interesting to see which RBs stay around with Davidson and Henderson coming in. Not sure where Henderson plays but he can carry the rock and catch it on the HS level for sure. Frankly, we need to either hang on to all of the RBs are look for depth whereever.

To me, the offense has been the problem in the second half of games, and it relates directly to consistently running the ball to take pressure off the CK and free up the receivers. It also gives the D some breathers and confidence.

Try looking at our scholarship numbers instead of making impossible suggestions. We have answers that were signed Wednesday.

So what do the signings on Wednesday have to do with the depth going into THIS season? The depth and plan was poor going into this season. If any of these kids were any good we should have seen them. Instead we ride an injured Mafah for a month and have zero answers for a back up.

People on here saying the depth is good seems

Very inaccurate to me. The last 3 years we have missed on almost every 1st or 2nd running back recruit we wanted (maybe more) (mostly to UgA). Adams is not a power 4 running back at all(we know why he got his offer) . I’m not sure why everyone is so high on Haynes. He is tiny and I’m not sure I’ve seen him break many tackles outside of against the Citadel. DE seems to have the pedigree impossible be a starter maybe. Jarvis Green who knows. Another late fall back offer who had a ton of yards but no other power 4 offers (at least until the very end of the recruiting cycle). We have missed on our top running offers for 3 straight years that’s why it’s like this.

In the first 2 years of the years that I assume that you are talking about we had both Mafah and Shipley (a 4th round NFL draft pick) in the running back room. Not to mention that during recruiting last year there was the possibility of Shipley being around this year. You don't find many recruits that want to go somewhere to be at best the 3rd RB.

Now that they are not in the picture, we have the 3rd highest rated RB recruit in the class with Davidson. We also have Henderson who rates as high as the number 13 RB. I'm not saying that there isn't concern for the playoffs and next year, but RB recruiting has been pretty good under the circumstances.

It isn’t. Haynes is a beast. Eziomume is a beast. Adams Jr is a beast. We just signed Gideon Davis who is a beast. Yes one and two are down but we have some dudes.
