Why do you want Clemson to win?

I’m not talking about just a single game tomorrow.
I mean, why do you want Clemson to win in general? (that is…if you do)
The psychology of sports fans is fascinating.
Is it because you want part of your persona to be associated with your affinity for a sports team? And therefore you crave to personally be associated with a winner?

So you agree that people just need it for their own personal identity.
Thanks for your honest input.

Because I love Clemson!
I pull for all sports especially main sports.
I'll turn to you, why do you want Clemson to win in Basketball?
I agree with everyone that it took Coach Brownell a little too long to start turning the program around, but he is doing it now. You don't get selected for a game in the Jimmy V Classic in MSG this year, and the Maui Classic next year unless you are considered a good program nationally.

I would answer that by saying that anyone representing Clemson athletically should want to win more than I want them to.
Being a Clemson graduate, there are people in my universe that know me as "a Clemson guy". Those that really know me, know that it is just a small part of my persona. I don't wear my fanhood on my sleeve. And that my affinity for Clemson is not based or influenced by wins and losses.
I have a few Clemson things in my office. Everything doesn't have a tiger paw on it nor is it all Clemson orange. I do proudly display my diplomas.
I think everyone likes to be associated with a winner. But there's no shame here in losing. Disappointment, yes. Shame would only come with an out of control program, athletes being arrested or otherwise disgracing the school they're representing.

First off, your argument and points are all fallacies. You’re describing psychopathologies that linger more towards narcissistic personality and other dark triad diagnoses. Your claims are an outright attack to every sports fan.
To understand the psychology of a fan you first have to understand what fan is. Fan, short for fanatic-A person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause. Now, into the psychology of a sports fan.
Social identity and belonging. Mankind has always felt a strong sense of needing to belong. People feel gratification when their teams win; we won! We played great today. When their team loses, they distance themselves. They really stink it up today.
Emotional connection and passion. Many sports fans feel a strong emotional connection with the teams they love. They experience the highs and lows as if something is happening to them. They also live vicariously through the players on the field. Sharing in joy, anguish, elation, etcetera. Winning causes the brain to release power endorphins which is the brains rewards system.
Community and social bonding. Many fans feel part of a community and interacting with that community is like an extension of family. We are social creatures and seek binds with other like-minded individuals. We also are regionally bound (for the most part) to “our” teams. E.g., someone born in Syracuse is more likely to be a Syracuse fan, whereas, someone born in Anderson is more like to be a Tiger.
Escapism and emotional regulation. Sports has long been the escape for hard-working people. After a tough week of work, what’s better than unwinding with 80,000 of your friends in Death Valley?! The escapism also helps people deal with negative emotions that can be overwhelming for many.
That’s a relatively short (could have written many pages) sports psychology analysis from a psychologist. Here’s the summary: people want Clemson to win because they (we) are all fanatics. We love our team. That simple. Your accusations make assumptions of hidden agendas and/or personal gain for wanting Clemson to win. See reading above for the real, healthy psychological gains when a person’s team wins.

There are many scholarly articles written about this.
And you just attempted to write one yourself. (or you cut and pasted)
So telling me my “points are all fallacies” was a weird way to start it off.

Now do the psychology of losing. Being too invested cuts both ways.

This is a very obvious answer. People who watch sports and route for a team associate themselves with that team. Therefore, when the team wins, it feels like they win. Winning feels good no matter what it’s in.

You’re probably on to something. Although the older we get the more we come to realize our team winning or losing has no impact on our lives (not in any significant way), we still sense that the outcome says something about us.

Because if you were raised in SC you had a foundational decision to make at a very young age: are you a tiger or a chicken? I don't care If you came here from Ohio, Alabama, Texas... you have 1 of 2 options if you come here prior to college. So, since we have to pull for one, and hate the other, winning makes life more pleasant.
This brings in a lot of factors, but a better question, perhaps, is: Why do some seem to base their own sense of self worth and/or wellbeing upon the success of a sports program of which they are neither player nor coach?
