Tigers stopped running down The Hill when the west endzone stands were built and the locker rooms were moved from Fike to beneath the new stands inside the stadium.
When the locker rooms were in Fike, the Tigers ran diagonally down The Hill toward the home sideline prior to warmups before most fans had entered the stadium.

Memorial Stadium's home team locker room used to be in Fike Fieldhouse. Running down the hill was literally the fastest way for the team to enter the stadium. Before the 1970 season we moved the home team locker room inside the stadium so it was no longer necessary to run down the hill. Some of the players felt we lost a enthusiasm boost and possible phycological advantage when we stopped running down the hill before the game. I believe it was defensive back Ben Anderson who campaigned to coach Hootie Ingram to reinstate the tradition before the 1972 SC game.

Because one of the most forgettable Clemson coachs thought it was wasted time to board the busses, go around the stadium, and get out and run down the hill. He was the coach when the idea for the Tiger Paw was born. Ten TUs for any Tnetter that can name this coach without looking it up.

The coaches reply when he was told Hootie Ingram would be taking his place. Coach said “he better not try to turn this stadium into Hooties Hollar! Death Valley is alive and well!

stopped us doing it. The late Ben Anderson went to him and got him to let srs do it one last time before they graduated. Hootie was an idiot on many levels.

Hottie got the original idea for the Tiger Paw from the University of Kentucky. We just embraced it and have been running with it ever since. The original Tiger Rag cost 25 cents.

It was sooo packed on the hill with students...

...back in the 70's that the team could not get down the hill with them all in the way. Then in the late 70's we built the TOP DECK SOUTH followed by the TOP DECK NORTH in the early 80's and that relieved the problem with students blocking the run down the hill. Now there's room to run.
Dang student can be such a nuisance sometimes....
