Why CU accepts institutional mediocrity wrt basketball

Mar 9, 2022, 6:08 PM

I don't know why. Can somebody please explain??

There's no debate about the facts.

No NCAA championships, no ACC tournament championships, only two ACC tournament final appearances, only two NIT tournament final appearances and one ACC regular season championship. Just 70+ years of league mediocrity. It is embarrassing that even South Carolina has won both an ACC tournament and a regular season championship.

TMK, CU doesn't have a similar history in any other sport. Are we just incredibly unlucky, or just plain don't care? I will agree it can be argued that it simply isn't cost justified to invest enough to have a legitimate shot at a random lucky championship, but other than possibly Pitt and BC, nobody else seems to have that opinion. And, I don't think we're looking to be athletic peers with those two schools.

Yawn….

I’m not going to call you a coot. However, your timing is off. CBB is permanently entrenched for next year based on (imo) 1) beating NC in Chapel hole and 2) how the team has played of late.

Again, I’m not ‘calling’ you a coot, but let’s talk football and baseball.

Only Coots hide from truth

bad UNC team on the road when everyone else has won there at least once, even Wofford and Winthrop. And then pointing to a five game winning streak that still ends up with a losing record in conference. And he points to that as success in the 10th year of a program.

Even the pro Brownell folks should be first in line to agree

With accepted mediocrity. Bc that’s what he is at best. If it’s facilities, pay etc then you are saying we’ve accepted mediocrity.

It’s lack of commitment. I don’t believe in bad luck. If the admin wanted to win in basketball they would have done so by now. At least had a few good years here and there. I mean even WF can win occasionally in FB. No reason Clemson basketball has to suck for so long.

Definitely a mystery. Low expectations is the only explanation imo.

Such a great point about Wake and football, our basketball program is a joke because our admin is ok with it being a joke…. Also to the OPs point of / NIT Finals, it would only be one had Rick Barnes not abandoned ship, that would have been a sweet 16 or better team that Larry Shyatt the bed took us to… similar to had OP not left us, Brads first one and done team would have made a nice NCAAT run… College bball is all about coaching, without a stud you are stuck in mediocrity or worse.

Mar 9, 2022, 6:27 PM

It is amazing. Since 1911, the Clemson BB team is 1,380 and 1,341. That's about as mediocre as it gets. Football is king. I think it is pretty simple. It makes the $$$ and the headlines. There aren't many schools that are great at both. The only ones probably have much bigger budgets than Clemson. I'm guessing North Carolina and Duke fans wonder why their football teams consistently stink.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I feel bad for the IPTAY donors and the sincere fans

Mar 9, 2022, 6:33 PM

The admin isn't trying. They're just hoping. Not gonna happen.

Look at UGA.. they had a surprising bust with Tom Crean, but, they acknowledge it and are moving on. And UGA pretty much does squat in basketball.

Can you explain why with a 50% pulse anyone owes you any explanation on anything?

I have a 50% pulse because I'm a truth teller

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think that is going to change under Neff....

Mar 9, 2022, 6:37 PM

Neff is a basketball guy because he played bkball, and was an student manager at Ga Tech. He has big plans for basketball. He knows Clemson can benefit with the transfer portal, and NIL in basketball. He can't touch football, because it is the best. But has ambitions to win big in basketball. the decision will not be based on a winning streak, losing streak outside of maybe winning the ACCT. He is going to use the best decision on body of work. In the next few weeks he will either decide to bring Brad back with a significant contract extension because Brad will need to recruit, or let him go...

Re: Why CU accepts institutional mediocrity wrt basketball

Mar 9, 2022, 6:40 PM

With Brad it's been more about bad luck and bad timing for the most part. His first year was decent so we upped our commitment, then when it was going south again he pulled a rabbit out of his ### during a do or die season and get more. He was on the verge again then - voila' - Sweet 16 and another extension and enhanced buyout. He pulled the same thing last year by having an NCAAT team (barely), but finally the Admin didn't bite, for the first time really, and only tacked an extra year on his deal and actually lowered the buyout some. This year it looked like it finally caught up with him, but not Brad. Boom! Big winning push here at the end to maybe eke out one more season. "See? We're about the turn the corner after all! See?" Rinse and repeat.

making many fans, myself included, simply not care at all about basketball. Maybe that's what they want. They want us all to be as apathetic about it as the administration is. This Brownell era is really the final straw. Over a decade and nothing, not even a question that he should be replaced from the administration. I actually forgot we had a game yesterda and remembered afte the game started tonight. And its the ACC tournament.

Ouch!! Now that right there was mean... mean, mean, mean. I think I'll scream. We need a better team, team, team. Or so it does seem. And I'll have some green eggs and ham, I will, and add in some butter and jam. Sing it again Sam.
