Why ACC will only get one team in.

3

Oct 18, 2024, 2:06 PM

Hypothetical situation.

Miami goes 12-0, then loses in the ACC Championship game (to Clemson, who finished 12-1). Miami did not play a team (other than Clemson) ranked in top 25.

TX 12-0 plays Bama 11-1 in SEC championship
UGA finishes 9-3 with losses to Bama, TX and Ole Miss.
Ole Miss finishes 10-2.
TN finishes 9-3 with losses to UGA and Bama
aTm finishes 10-2 with losses to ND (opening game) and TX

Do you think the committee would pick Miami over UGA or TN?

I don't.

At least 5 SEC teams will be ranked, final ranking, ahead of 12-1 Miami or 11-2 Clemson - whichever loses in Charlotte.

Nothing that the committee does to the ACC would surprise me after what they did last year to 12~0 team

Eh, that FSU team was screwed but they are also beating no one without their starting QB. Maybe if they had DJ last year as a backup they would have gotten in 🤪

FSU being left out of the playoffs wasn't the worst thing to happen to it last season. Kirby Smart was.

Agree. I’ve said from the beginning the acc and big 12 will be 1 bid leagues. The loser of the ACC championship will not have quality wins to draw from.

What turd B1G team? Oregon, O410 St, and…Iowa? Mitchagain? State Penn? Indiana? Ill noise? Nebraska? Nope. Not seeing it. B1G is garbage except one or two teams. Kinda like the SUC. Guess which power conferences have the most wins against other conferences since 2023? The ACC! And the SEC at 12 each. The ACC holds a head to head advantage over the SEC. The ESecPN narrative doesn’t hold water. Stop drinking their kool-aid.

Yes, the B1G and SEC have larger viewership numbers. Hence the pay gap in TV revenue sharing. Look at overall income (revenue plus private donations plus concessions and ticket sales). Clemson takes a backseat to very few. Everyone says Clemson has no NIL money. Not true. 17th largest purse in the US. We just don’t spend much of it.

The ESPN narrative stretched to the B1G when they bought out Fox. They now have all their money tied up in those two conferences. ESPN has a monopoly and it’s time for an antitrust suit. ESPN makes ACC games hard to watch out of market on purpose. They’re suppressing viewership to justify killing the ACC and running the super conference game. Dig a little deeper and the motives and facts don’t add up to their claims. SEC and B1G games are given priority over ACC even in ACC regions. Try going to Ohio and finding ACC games without Clemson or Florida St. You can’t. You can find Rutgers vs Minnesota in every region!

Two things

First what about Bama, Tenn, or Ole Miss makes you think they won’t slip up again against an inferior opponent.

Second, you can’t set the precedent in year 1 to punishing conference championship losers. The games make too much money for the conference to give them up as a risk. Also I don’t think Miami is 12-0.

The purpose of the playoff is to make money for P2.

Have you forgotten about SMU? They could possibly go undefeated the rest of the season and be highly ranked.

Just giving a hypothetical. If SMU or Pitt end up in Charlotte...

12-1 Pitt would be left out just like 12-1 Miami.

I disagree. If Miami goes 12-0, they will be a top 5 team. A loss to Clemson in the ACCCG will not drop them far enough to knock them out of the playoffs.

The FSU situation was different.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Time will tell. I suspect the committee...

Oct 18, 2024, 3:17 PM

Re: Time will tell. I suspect the committee...

Why would 2024 undefeated Miami not be top 5 but 2023 undefeated FSU (regular season) was top 5?

Re: Why ACC will only get one team in.

In your hypothetical situation, I believe both Clemson and Miami would get in to the playoffs. If Clemson were to hammer Miami to the tune of 31-0, maybe your hypothetical plays out. If its mostly a close game or goes to the wire, then Miami will not be left out...I don't think. If Clemson continues to play like they're playing and loses to Miami in a close game, I think the committee will vote Clemson in at 11-2 runner up unless SMU finishes 12-0 and gets left out of the conference championship game, etc. etc...

Re: Why ACC will only get one team in.

Oct 18, 2024, 2:51 PM

The ACC could have:

Champ Clemson 12-1
Miami 12-1
SMU 11-1

2 loss teams ahead of SMU? Yes. Miami? I doubt it. Depends how many 1 and 2 loss teams there are. I agree there’s a fix on our favorite sport, but no 3 loss team is getting in over a 1 loss.

Side note, I doubt SMU goes undefeated in ACC play. Obviously could happen but I don’t see it happening.

Still too many variables to project anything meaningful. I have always said the ACC would only get one team in. I still believe that. Even if the ACC or Big12 had multiple great teams this year, the powers that currently control college football (read television executives) are going to favor the P2 in order to help bring about the new Uni-league (whatever it ends up being called).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You and I agree. I was just giving the best case...

Oct 18, 2024, 3:19 PM

.... scenario (12-1 Miami and 12-1 Clemson) would still only get 1 ACC team in.

I wasn't trying to predict it would end up this way.

tnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why ACC will only get one team in.

Oct 18, 2024, 3:54 PM

I've been saying this for a while now. The playoff was expanded to get more SEC and BIG schools in. It was never really about the smaller schools. There isn't a scenario where 2 ACC schools get in, especially this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I normally agree with you, but I don't this time...

Oct 18, 2024, 3:57 PM

I can't see the SEC getting more than 4 teams in:

There are 7 that have a realistic shot right now. Of those 7, there are still a lot of games between them. Lets take extreme examples...

Higher ranked team (currently) always wins...
Texas goes 13-0 and gives an additional loss to Georgia, A&M, and SEC Championship runner-up
Georgia goes 10-2 and gives an additional loss to Ole Miss
Alabama goes 10-2 and gives an additional loss to Tennessee and LSU
LSU goes 10-2 and gives an additional loss to A&M
Tennessee goes 9-3
A&M goes 9-3
Ole Miss goes 9-3.

One of the 10-2 teams loses to Texas and goes 10-3. In that scenario, I find it unlikely that any of the 9-3 teams get in if there are more than (3) 11-1/12-1/13-0 teams available out of Clemson, Miami, SMU, Pitt, BYU, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Arizona State.

If there is more parity in the SEC (which they've had a lot of this year), then chances are that we see at least one of those 10-2 teams above slip to 9-3 and one or two of the 9-3 teams slip to 8-4. Then I guarantee that the SEC doesn't get more than 4 teams. It starts to become possible that they only get 3 in that scenario (especially if Notre Dame gets a slot and the Big 10 gets 4).

My prediction is:
SEC - 4 Teams
Big 10 - 3 Teams
ACC - 2 Teams
Big 12 - 2 Teams
Non-Power 5 - 1 Team

Notre Dame could steal a slot from ACC or Big 12 if they made it. It's possible that both Boise State at 12-1 and Army/Navy at 13-0 could get in if that happened to occur. However - in that case - Notre Dame wouldn't make it because they would have lost to Army/Navy. I honestly don't think Notre Dame will make it... and I don't think the combination of 12-1 Boise State and 13-0 Army/Navy is likely either.

It's quite possible that the Big 12 and/or ACC will eat their own enough to not get 2 bids (just like its possible that the SEC gets down to 3), but I'd say if I'm projecting currently I think they would both get 2.

Re: Why ACC will only get one team in.

I know Miami is your rival but your thought is off base. Because teams ranked ahead of the U will play each other, the Canes will move up in the rankings and losing to us in the ACCCG will not drop them very far.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Plus - I'd be surprised if Bama doesn't lose again... maybe even 2 more times...

Oct 18, 2024, 5:14 PM

They are not the Bama of old and have some real problems on defense. So I doubt we will see a 11-1 Alabama gumming up the playoff talks...

2025 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgtnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, UN would go with one loss to a top 4 team.

Oct 18, 2024, 5:16 PM

We can't presume to know what the POC will do in the final polls. It's just too early and if we beat Miami I'm leaning toward believing that having only one loss to a top team isn't going to drop them far.

I'm assuming if they remain undefeated until the ACCCG they will be ranked in the top 6 of the POC rankings.

You say?

Re: Why ACC will only get one team in.

Oct 18, 2024, 9:48 PM

Bret, I have to disagree. If Clemson and Miami go undefeated thru the regular season, they will both be ranked very highly - ahead of all of the SEC teams that you have named other than Texas & Bama.

Unless one of them boatraces the other, I don't see them dropping out of the top 12.

If UGA loses to Ole Miss, they could be left out. Tenn at 9 & 3 could be left out. I think you get 4 SEC teams, not 5.
