Who is the best player on this team?

1998 we went 3-8 but had players on the roster like Antwan Edward’s, Robert Carswell, Keith Adams, Rod Gardner, Travis Zachery, Rahim Abdullah, Woody Dantzler…a lot of those guys were underclassmen in 98 but were really good. But who on this team is of that ilk that we will remember? Probably Sammy Brown and Aveion Terrell, Wesco… the rest are not difference makers. I thought Woods and Parker were going to wreak havoc this year but they seem to be on cruise control. Maybe it’s the money that extinguishes the fire that those older guys had? Not a lot on this team that stand out.

Heldt has been out-played in 3 games, according to PFF, by Denhoff...

The top rated defensive player via PFF is AT, Jahiem Lawson is a very close 2nd.
Both are in the low 80s.
Information only, no editorial[as like the Baby Jesus, I <3s all the little Tigers], make of it what yous yutes will and yes, PFF has a hole in its swing, but so does everyone save those directly involved. In other words, outsiders are best-guessing, some being mo educated than others.

Had Wesco not gotten hurt (and thus finishing his SOPH year playing only 6.5 games), then I’d say ‘pretty much a sure thing.’
Wesco did get hurt, and since the most recent work is remembered better than the older work, then another player on O has chance to be our best O guy for the year.
I haven’t checked PFF, but my eyeball text says Brayden Jacobs has a puncher’s shot at being our best player on offense. For practical purposes, BJ became a starter with the BC game. He also played a lot vs UNC. In both of those games, he looked very good. Dare I say, clearly better than the LT who started in the LSU game.
BJ (again, to my ‘eyes’ evaluation) was the best O-lineman on our team in the SMU game.
That makes 2.5 games of outstanding play, with 5 games more.
If if if he has gotten enough ‘feel of live action’ from playing against weakling BC and UNC, and against mediocre SMU (I.e., SMU’s mediocre defense), then we’ll see if he can elevate his game to be outstanding again in the Duke game.
One step at a time. If BJ dominates vs Duke like he did vs UNC, BC, and SMU, then he’ll really get everyone’s attention. We’ll hold off on projecting how he’ll play vs FSU and S.Carolina.
As for Tristan Leigh, I think that a move to LG would be great for our OL to finish out the 2025 season.

Wesco on offense. On defense it's trickier. I want to say Heldt but he has sorta dropped off lately. If not Heldt then Terrell.

Our back seven doesn’t do well in zone, either.
Most of them sometimes play as if they’ve never been coached.
(A.Terrell and K.Barnes are excluded from this critique. Both play like they know what they’re doing. A.Hampton knows where to go, but too often doesn’t have the wheels to get there in time.)

Antonio Williams on offense/ Randall a close 2nd. Impressed with how he has handled the position change and runs ok in spite of the OL play.
On D, Heldt is probably the MVP so far. Hampton seems to be making improvements as well.

A.Hampton has improved. He seems to have successfully made some adjustments to compensate for his pedestrian (for a CB) speed.
As for offense, A.Randall and A.Williams … assuming both stay healthy for remainder of the season … will probably eclipse Wesco in the ‘best player on Offense’ guy. A player has to play more than half a season to be the ‘best player’ on his unit.
Really a shame that Wesco got hurt. Of course, everyone wants him to return to full health.

Rahim Abdullah.... that dude should have been an NFL Hall of Famer.
His size, speed, and athleticism were off the charts. But, he did not play with passion and was out of position a lot of the time. Reggie Herring lost his voice at many practices yelling at him to no avail.
His measurables got him drafted, but he didn't stay in the NFL as long as he should have.
I hope he is doing well.... Think he left after the 1998 season as a junior to go pro instead of staying under a new HC.

I think TJ Moore is way better than we realize. IMO he'll have the most NFL success of the current group. Antonio Williams is also very good, but he's overlooked this year due to injury.
