Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant

Nov 25, 2021, 1:21 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: 3-star LB commits to Clemson ]

Just as long as Coach V is doing them. He seems to do a good job of evaluating 3 star talent. https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2016/isaiah-simmons-3244

Nov 25, 2021, 2:24 PM

Thanks for naming ONE standout 3 star player out of hundreds. These posts are hilarious.

And I’m disagreeing with this signing. I have no problem with it, but when people name one or even a few lower ranked players that are standouts like it’s not a complete exception to the rule crack me up.

*and I’m NOT disagreeing with this signing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant

Nov 26, 2021, 11:19 AM

It's a commitment, not a signing.

When somebody says something like this, I just shake my head because you clearly don't even follow recruiting really. Yet, here you are as a critic.

While we are at it, the NFL is lined with plenty of 3 star or no star talent. Hunter Renfrow wasn't even recruited and yet he's a star at the highest level and he's just one example. His QB played at Fresno, so nobody really wanted him, either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We’ve had dozens of stand-out 3-star signings ...

Nov 25, 2021, 3:08 PM [ in reply to Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant ]

No school in the country neglects to identify and sign 3-stars with potential. Not Alabama, not Ohio State, Not Oklahoma ... they all know that you have to find hidden tars among the 3-star universe to be successful.

Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant

Nov 25, 2021, 3:21 PM [ in reply to Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant ]

Dear Tigerlife2005, we've had a lot more recent 3* defenders other than Isiah Simmons that have done great things for us:

Baylon Spector
James Skalski
Grady Jarrett (OK, he's DLine if you want to quibble)
DeShawn Williams (OK, he's also DLine if you want to quibble some more)
DJ Reader (OK, he's aother DLineman yada yada yada)
Nolan Turner (I think he was a 2* HS player ... and OK, he's a Safety if you want to quibble)
Ben Boulware
Spencer Shuey
Kendall Joseph
B.J.Goodson
Kevin Dodd (? either 2* or 3* ... I don't remember, but while a DE at Clemson, he became LB in NFL)

There are more, but hopefully you'll get the point.

Try harder before you suggest that Clemson's coaches do not have an eye for the type of talent THAT THEY CAN COACH UP before making ignorant posts.

Good luck to you and enjoy your Thanksgiving.

Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant

Nov 25, 2021, 6:47 PM

Well I guess you didn’t read my post, because I said I agreed with the signing of 3 star players. Did you miss that?

What I was laughing at is when people name a few 3 star or lower ranked players that have been stars like Simmons and pretend like that’s the norm, when in reality it’s the rare exception.

The players you named were not all star players who went on to be drafted high, like Simmons, or had a big time career. That’s what I was responding to. You listed a lot of good players, and some role players, but not many stars. But even with the players you listed, it’s 11 out of hundreds of lower ranked players that have come through the program during their time. They are still the rare exception.

But again, since you missed it the first time, I AGREE with Clemson taking lower ranked players. Obviously we can’t just take all 4 and 5 star players, and even if we did it wouldn’t mean they’d all pan out. 3 star players are a vital part of the team, which is a good thing, but they per capita don’t pan out at nearly as high a rate as higher ranked players.

Enjoy your thanksgiving as well.

Grady Jarrett is a star player for the Falcons.

Nov 25, 2021, 8:43 PM

Several of the others are or were starters in the NFL.

Most of them got at least got hard look.

That’s a line-up of great players he listed.

They may not be freaks like Simmons, but they were really solid contributors to the success we’ve had at Clemson.

We would not have had the great run we’ve had without them.

I didn’t say none of them were star players. I said all of them were not star players, which is what I was referring to.

Yes, Grady Jarrett was and is as star. I fully agree. I would argue that Boulware and Skalski were the only other star Clemson players on that list. The others were very good players, but not star players by any metric other than fan bias. And I agree with you about Clemson needing them to be as good as they’ve been on their current run of success.

Nov 25, 2021, 11:22 PM [ in reply to Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant ]

OK, I'll play along ... which of the players that I had listed were 4*?

And you can't have it both ways ... complaining about 3* players in general (even if you did back away from the W.W. commitment), but yet continuing to take the angle that 3*'s are generally not good enough for elite teams (or elite defenses ... such as the case with our 2021 D).

Thanks for your thoughts and enjoy what's left of the Thanksgiving evening.

Could you point out to me where I’m complaining about 3 star players? Or where I said they weren’t good enough for elite teams?

Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant

Nov 26, 2021, 4:37 PM [ in reply to Re: Whether you are doing flips is irrelevant ]

Hey dude .... stars are important if you are choosing the right player, and if you have never seen the guys play then the best thing to do is select strictly by their number of stars. Lousy teams, like the Coots, like to pretend that stars do not matter. However, more important than the stars is seeing them play and knowing what you are looking at. We did not get "LUCKY" picking guys like Grady Jarrett, Isiah Simmone, James Skalski, Kevin Dodd, Vic Beasley. They were chosen because the coaches saw in them something others did not. I am going to defer to the coaches.

Nov 25, 2021, 3:11 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: 3-star LB commits to Clemson ]

He has a whopping 30 offers but none from any top 10 type schools. His best besides us are Louisville and Miami.

In his highlight reel, he is playing safety. He is no Mukuba but he does seem pretty quick.

Overall, I don't see anything to make this a big-time commit.

I think people are just happy someone picked Clemson. I don't get the back-flips either to be honest.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I usually look at the highlights and look at other offers..

Nov 25, 2021, 3:44 PM

Dear PACIFIC BEACH TIGER®,

It is not uncommon for colleges to offer the 'taller & skinny' HS DBs if they perceive that HS players frame as one which can be developed into LB size.

Not just Isiah Simmons (who was recruited as a DB but evolved into an DB / LB hybrid), but also Tanner Muse (yes, yet another of those 'awful' 3* HS players who developed into a star collegian 'hybrid' DB / LB player and then onto a NFL paycheck) fit the W.W. profile.

We have another such similar player with a similar body-type among our commitments ... Jaren Kanak (probably mis-spelled it).

Sure, this guy may not be fast enough to be a super-stud college DB, but he's plenty fast enough to be a top end LB when he adds some pounds.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nov 25, 2021, 5:24 PM [ in reply to I usually look at the highlights and look at other offers.. ]

no real reason to do back flips over anyone ... even 4-star guys ... but as I said earlier, every top program takes guys like this every year. If you can’t find hidden gems among the 3-star universe, you’re probably Kirby Smart or somebody like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Before the big couch potato coaches wander in with "just what we need another white slow 3 star linebacker" the guy runs a 4.51 - 40 yd dash. For comparison Trenton Simpson runs a 4.57. But laser times at camps mean nothing to those couch potato coaches they will still call him another slow white boy. Guess you can't fix stupid.
