Saw 2 dead ones on 81 around TL Hanna a few days ago. Just passed 3 dead ones on 418 between Fountain Inn and Pelzer. Am I late in noticing these critters?

Armadillos in the upstate is nothing new over the last several years. I’ve seen my fair share in the Clemson area. However, the numbers are still relatively low when compared to the midlands and lowcountry.

Here’s one I saw while hiking Station Cove Falls a couple years ago.

Not that early. They were stuck on the Georgia border for yrs due to the Savanah River chain. They pretty much invaded Georgia from Florida in the 80s and 90s. It was late 90s early 2000s when enough crossed the 95 bridge to get a breeding population in SC from late 90s early 2000 they populated the east coast and spread west. Its only about 15yrs that breeding population has made it to the foothills. They are temp sensitive, don't swim well which are migration factors. The Little River and Cape Fear River NC have been the northern limiting factors to date. Any extended cold winters will thin the heard but climate has been mild for many winters now.

Now you might have seen one or 2 thirty yrs ago but the were not a true breeding population. They have overcome that threshold now and only the App Mtns colder weather will slow west migration.

Thanks for your input. Great knowledge of the spread. SC it also becoming habitat for the weird Taigu(sp?) lizards. Those things are no joke.

Columbia seems to be the line now, haven't seen gators above it, but I've seen

They’ve been in the Upstate for a while. I was driving through Newberry county a couple of weeks ago and noticed quite a few dead ones on the site of the road. They’re pretty common everywhere now in the state.

There are zero cases of leprosy from armadillos in SC. The strain of leprosy in armadillos is "almost" impossible to transfer to humans but is very treatable. In history, most of the affected persons were people that use armadillos as a frequent food source going to the Natives and poor eating poorly prepped food. This leprosy is very different from what most ppl recognize which is still treatable but not transferred from armadillos and more easily transferred from person to person.

Possums on the half shell are good for nothing except digging up your property.

There have been a lot of them in the lowcountry for the last 10 years or so now. I remember my grandma telling us about them when they first became a story down there. Fortunately, I don't believe they're that harmful aside from digging up your yard or eating plants or crops. They seem to be more of a nuisance than anything else. I didn't realize they'd gotten up here in significant numbers, but I'm not surprised. I have yet to see one in person in the upstate, though.

True story about those critters: many years ago, my Mother

got a call from a sister in southeast Texas, who told her that their Mamma was up to shenanigans with her guns!

Grandmother, who lived in an old farmhouse on acreage on the Gulf Coast, heard a noise at her back door, leapt out of bed and grabbed her double barrel. Stepped into her long hallway and opened fire through that back door, thinking someone was breaking into her house. Another sister, who happened to be visiting, jumped out of bed in sheer fright and ran into that hall, and what was Grandmother doing! Why, reloading both barrels, of course! When they took a look, she had blown one of those varmints to smithereens with one bad side effect: her shots had blown her door to splinters along with that critter.

My Aunt told my Momma that someone needed to take my Grandmother's guns away; my Mother said, "YOU try to take them...I won't because she'll tell me where to go!" And so Grandmother kept her arsenal the rest of her life: a six-shooter under her pillow, that double barrel and a rifle next to her bed, all fully loaded, ready to go! No doubt, she was the best shot in the family....lololololol.

They are illegal immigrants! They came up with the fire ants and killer bees. They are tearing up property all over North Georgia and can do about as much damage as the wild hogs when they focus on your flower beds or lawn.

They started showing up often in the midlands of SC 10-15 years ago. Before that I had only seen them when going to Florida and South Georgia. I read somewhere they are projected to reach PA at some point but couldn't survive beyond.

Is it a coincidence that the Bucknuts & the Armadillos began showing up at about the same time?

I think not.

One is a verminous, disease ridden, road hazard. The other is an armadillo.

I can’t say for the upstate, but here in Barnwell (start of the lowcountry on the Savannah River side of SC) they have been Everywhere for the past 15-20 years. We used to never see skunks down here either but I remembered them being in the upstate as long as I can remember. Now we have a huge population of skunks. Yay. 🤦‍♂️
