What was the up side to signing Bubba Chandler to a football

Jul 12, 2021, 3:50 PM

scholarship to play such a difficult position in QB when he was such a high MLB draft prospect?

Well, he wasn’t considered 1st round until he started slinging 95mph fastballs regularly but he was a good football & baseball player. It would have been well worth it had he not got drafted & had to backup DJ this season & he won a few games for our Football team.

It was worth the gamble, Dabo loses sometime but has made some great finds of talent.

It probably would have taken more than this summer for him

to be ready to be the backup QB ahead of Helms. All of our recent QBs have enrolled early and participated in Spring practice and they were all world QBs. Plus, you know he was never going to be fully committed to playing college football with such MLB potential.

I just don't see the potential upside where he was going to be a contributor to our team at QB before he headed off to MLB. Football was always going to be the bridesmaid.

Bubba is a heck of a QB, his film is really good.

I saw no upside…

from the beginning. Maybe the coaches saw different?

He was going to add depth to the QB room with no worries

about transferring because he wasn’t the starter. He would be satisfied with his limited role on the football team while he starred on the baseball diamond.

He was first and foremost a great prospect for Monte Lee ... who would be on a football scholarship.

That was the upside for Clemson.

Exactly! Baseball certainly needed him!

FSU signed 3 kids out of HS who were first round MLB prospects.

1. Chris Weinke. Went to play baseball, but eventually worked out well for FSU.

2. Jamies Winston. He's to total jerk and an embarrassment to FSU, but - as far as "working out for FSU" it did fairly well.

There was a third person, between those two, who also signed with FSU but went to baseball. Worked out well for him. Never had to come back to FSU. His mane is Joe Mauer.

So, 2 out of three times (at least these three times) there was an upside to signing a first round draft pick in baseball.

Jameis worked out well by winning while FSU worked some "magic" making sure he stayed on the team.
