What does the SEC signing limit of 25 actually accomplish?

Feb 28, 2013, 8:48 AM

It doesn't seem to have any effect at all except possibly from a propaganda standpoint.

It's just another rule for them to break

Feb 28, 2013, 9:00 AM

That will never be brought up by any major news outlet because it makes the all mighty SEC look bad.

It is the commish's way of publicly trying to save face because he knows his coaches will not abide by it. Yes they only sign 25 a year but they don't do it the correct way. Instead they continue to kick people off the team and skirt the 25 rules through counting back and grey-shirts.

spurrier kicked how many south carolina hsers to the curb when he took over, the schsa went postal and yet, each year, they continue to send recruits to scar.

Thats sort of my view on it

Feb 28, 2013, 9:15 AM [ in reply to if the recruits, their parents, coaches and advisors don't ]

This is the sort of thing that should be self-regulating. Run off enough players and the new recruits/parents/high schools should take notice and negatively effect future recruiting.

But that's not how it's working, and I really don't see how I have much room to complain about it.

That is the NCAA rule that is enforced, but the answer is yes. Some schools, I have heard, hill just declare a medical issue that will keep the kid on scholarship, but not on the team. Some teams may make a kid some sort of assistant for the program and pay them enough to stay at the school. Some, like usuc, just tell them to hit the road, and sometimes they do it a couple of days before signing, so it ties a kid up and makes it very difficult for him to sign with anybody. There is no bottom to how low some will go, and yet, some of these kids are still stupid enough to continue to commit to them.

These are 18 year old KIDS, naive about the world and

Feb 28, 2013, 10:15 AM

someone should be watching their back for them. The parents probably don't expect all of these coaches fawning over their kid to turn their back on them either. For what these kids bring into unviersities and the NCAA in terms of money, they totally deserve someone keeping the power brokers honest.

Re: These are 18 year old KIDS, naive about the world and

Mar 3, 2013, 9:46 PM

Your points are very valid. Sadly, there are some, perhaps many, programs and coaches who have no shame when it comes to getting kids to commit to them, and the kids mean zip, zero, nada to them. The kids are just a piece of meat that can be discarded and replaced, and it is the kid who suffers in that instance. You mentioned parents, but some of these kids are raise by a person who doesn't completely have the best interest of the kid at heart, as well. There have been plenty of parents who looked the other way when the praise, gifts, cash, cars, promises of houses and/or jobs started rolling in. It is sad, but it is very, very true. Hershel Walker was all set to be a Tiger, but I live a couple of miles from the beautiful home that was started during his freshman year at ugay. It is a sad fact, but a fact, none the less.

ones or sign 25 and hope that you have 25 good ones? Which give you the best odds? The first allows you to make 5 mistakes; the latter allows none.

Re: Had you rather sign 30 and hope that you have 25 good

Mar 3, 2013, 9:51 PM

Had you rather be one of the 5 that get cast aside because the coaching staffs had no intentions of keeping all they signed? It is their job to get it right, and if they make a mistake, they need to be the ones who live with it. It will make them do a better job initially, rather than to sign 30 or 35, knowing they will have to find reasons to cull 5-10. JMO, but nobody forces a coach to recruit and sign a player. It is clearly on them.

Re: What does the SEC signing limit of 25 actually accomplish?

Feb 28, 2013, 10:59 AM

The thing that bother me the most is that the counting back early enrollees and counting forward grayshirts doesn't seem to apply to the 25 rule for the previous and future class.

For example, if I sign 29 players in 2011, and my 2010 class was a full 25, I should not be allowed to count an early enrollees back to the 2010 class. Likewise, if I wanted to count 4 grayshirts from the 2011 class towards my 2012 class, that should mean I can only sign 21 in the next class. However, the rule doesn't seem to be enforced that way.

If they enforced the 25 rule to all years (not just the current one), then the rule would actually fix the oversigning problem.

Well it gives SEC schools an extra class over a 4 yr period. They get 5 classes in 4 years to everyone elses four. Got to keep up the sec winning tradition you know.

if you have 5 employees working for you and only 4 produce, do you keep the dead weight just because YOU hired him? if you do, you will probably be closing your company doors assuming it takes 5 productive employees to keep the doors open.
