What are they looking @ W/ Bentley?

Mar 5, 2017, 11:27 AM

I am not purposely slamming the kid ,but what does he bring to the table that is gonna win the Coots some games?I havent seen jack squat myself, now I dont watch the fowl birds much but when I have he looks below average at best.I saw him live @ Death Valley and he was awful, but he shouldve at least stayed in the game and took the whooping like a man like the rest of the yardbirds did.

If I'm being fair, I'm sure the kid can sling the ball pretty well. But the only way he's going to survive this season is if his oline gets better. They were getting gashed last season and I don't think it's going to improve much if at all next season.

And with Clemson Dline and defensive unit in general...it could get ugly for that oline.

Sure you can point out the mediocre stats and the terrible performance against our Tigers but he SHOULD have been in HS...that's all that matters.

better than the other options

for a freshman i thought he was solid

probably a top 5 sec qback, even if that's not saying much

In practice he throws a good long ball...

Mar 5, 2017, 12:36 PM

... Most quality QB's can throw a good ball when they are not under duress.
But in a game they are usually under some form of pressure, obviously.
He doesn't appear to be a natural scrambler and without proper protection he will get pretty tired of getting knocked down.
He will begin to "hear the footsteps" even when there aren't any.
Now, with McIlwain gone they won't have any depth at that position.
Unless their O Line has improved drastically (and it doesn't appear that it's improved at all) then it's going to be a long year for them.
Then of course they will start looking for "the next greatest thing."

They also lost one of their offensive line starters to graduation. Don't know if that is a good thing or not since their O-Line is so bad.

Well it was their left tackle, Mason Zandi...never a great spot to lose somebody if he's any good. Of course, they couldn't really protect Bentley against any pass rush with a pulse so it's kind of a push, since the other four dudes are a year older.

Hearing they're tinkering with moving Zack Bailey over to RT, and flopping last year's right tackle, Malik Young, over to the left...which probably ain't good, considering Young was a 3-star OG/OT tweener but that's apparently what they got, good luck to 'em and God Bless. Would also cost them whatever push they have inside with Bailey and get Bailey into space - where he is not as good - but maybe that's what they feel they gotta do.

Whatever, this is not exactly a world-class - or really even passable - OL and Bentley is not mobile. Bentley strikes me as the sort of pocket passer who can do OK if you can protect him but his inability to extend plays and elude pressure is likely going to get him crushed (like it did against Clemson) if the Gamecocks can't protect him...and they can't.

He likes to push the ball downfield, and he doesn't lack for confidence, but I did notice his deeper balls tend to fizzle out some too. I personally am not supersold. He strikes me as the sort of guy the SEC used to like even a couple years back as a game-manager on a power-running team but aside from Arkansas and maybe LSU there aren't a ton of those teams left; even 'Bama is getting more into mobile QB's these days now that they've been clubbed over the head by guys like Deshaun Watson a few times.

Behind Bentley, of course, they got nada, now that they've run off their last three 4-star saviors (who of course all fizzled after less than a full year as starters): Conner Mitch, Lorenzo Nunez, and Brandon McIlwain. So it's Bentley Or Bust for 'em, this year...I guess he's got that going for him.

He looked like a deer in headlights against the only two...

Mar 5, 2017, 12:54 PM

good defenses he played against, us and Florida. And looked very pedestrian against mediocre to bad defenses. Just coots living in a fantasy world. Makes for a good laugh though. Their heads are spinning that we are kings of the college football world, and they are looking for any delusion to hang their hats on.
