What are the primary reasons, players transfer?

1

Jan 4, 2023, 9:52 AM

1 - More playing time

2 - NIL money/More NIL money

3 - To play for a team (in a system) that will showcase their talents and enhance their draft status

4 - Some combination of the above three

Your thoughts?

depends on the individual. Especially kids from lower levels may be looking for a chance to showcase themselves against better competition

I believe the vast majority of players in the portal are seeking a better opportunity to further their career. Most are stuck behind very talented players at their current school and simply seek a landing at a place that provides them with the ability to compete for playing time. The vast majority of portal players do not have an existing brand to market NIL.

The very small minority of successful players with an existing brand jumping into the portal are looking for 1 of 2 things or both.

1. Better NIL opportunities
2. A team that could make noise on the national level

Men at 25 play football. Men at 40 play tennis. Men at 60 play golf. Have you noticed as men get older their balls get smaller.

3 is just a natcherly occurring offshoot of 1.

5. Lack of self-awareness
6. Poor judgement
7. Character/chemistry

Just saying that they may well have some baggage also. Will you get some winners from the portal? Certainly, but you could also pick up a “subtraction through addition”. I suspect this figures into Dabo’s considerations.

So many, ~40%, will never leave the Portal, so they...

It's typically to get more playing time.

Which is closely related to showcasing their talents and skills for the next level.

The NIL thing gets blamed a lot here, but it seems to be a minor factor for transfers.

Well, LSU has come up with a very LSU-ish way of keeping players...........

they want to. simple as that.

no one bats an eye if a scholarship engineering students transfers to a better school for more opportunities or a lesser school because it's too hard.

Hookers and blow....

But seriously, one big issue is you've got a lot of adults making promises to these young men that end up not getting fulfilled. Lloyd was a starter at a top 25 SEC program, getting really good NIL money. All of a sudden, out of the blue he's in the portal. Not sure if true, but rumors of him finding out that wasn't the best move and tried to come back but Beamer said no. The tampering that is going on is rampant, and not fair to these young people. So many of these guys are going to end up in a worse spot, or no spot at all.
