What about Dabo's comment today that he will never "run a kid off"

who's doing what he should be doing? Several have posted on here that he needs to run off unproductive players in order to create openings for portal players.
I have a couple of thoughts...
First, I think this message is meant to resonate with high school prospects that we are recruiting. To say anything else would be used against him on the recruiting trail. If my son was considering Clemson, this promise would mean something.
Second, I am not sure his stance really changes much. Look, attrition through graduation, transfers and NFL guys will create the openings necessary to bring in the minimum of 10 guys I think we need from the portal to make this team a playoff contender.
It seemed to me that Dabo was talking out of both sides of his mouth today and I think he has to at this point. As for his comment about tampering, there are ways to put the word out to a kid without "tampering." If we are waiting until January to recruit the portal, we might as well stay home.

a contender next year. If he’s not going to run anyone off then I hope that he “oversigns” and doesn’t try to hover around the 85 mark. The SEC basically agreed to stick with that #, the ACC didn’t so we should not be limited in that way. Sign an additional 10 and put them above the others on the depth chart. They are welcome to ride it out but they basically become practice squad like the walkons not guys we are counting on for depth or expecting to develop into depth players

I see what your are saying and I think it is a valid point. If we sign a bunch of fallback guys this year, that will be counter productive IMO. I don't think we will. From what I am reading, we only have about 5-6 committable offers still out there...

I say that's fine and good as long as we are not grabbing so many fallback recruits that we leave no room from the portal. I will say I'm not super encouraged with that happening as it seems the decommits we have recently had were immediately filled by projects with minimal legitimate offers.

Dabo also said we have 105 scholerships and we are not going to cut players. If people listen and read between the lines, he is saying: players can stay on scholership and earn thier degree. We will still go out and recruit portale players to play instead of them. He has a plans, let's see it play out.

Let’s hope he doesn’t allow bums to stay on the roster and collect a check that someone could be receiving that could actually help us win at LSU.
You’re right, we’ll see.

Kid comes to Dabo and say, Coach, I need to play more. My Mom thinks I should play more. Dabo says, Good luck with that. I’ll be pulling for you.
Kid comes to Dabo and says, Coach, I need more money or I’m gonna walk. Dabo says, be sure to let me know where you land. I’ll always follow you.
Consequence: 6-8, perhaps more, positions open for next year.
But Dabo will NEVER talk badly about a student current or departed. Same way HR would, or should, handle the release of an employee.
Thanks for the effort and the trouble. Best wishes.

I have no problem with him not running off non productive players. Clemson is supposed to be different and a family.

Same here IF, as he said, they are putting in the effort everywhere they are supposed to and meet the academic and conduct expectations. He said "If they don't develop. that's on us" which is the truth, if they don't develop, that is on scouting. The message is: If you commit to us the way we need you to commit to us, then we will commit to you.

you can "run them off" w/o stripping their schollie.....

not sure when the 105 scholarships go into effect......may already be, BUT.....
You're going to have natural attrition from Grad, transfer, draft, etc........It was "tough" to have 85 "productive" players when only 85 schollies were given. Now, you have 105 so you should have PLENTY of "wiggle room" to ADD portal players and keep the current guys on scholarship.
Just an example, you tell Cole Turner:
"We'd like for you to stay and there's a scholarship for you if you choose, BUT we're going to pursue WR A, B, & C to come play for us. You can stay and compete for your job.......or not. Your choice."

went into effect this year, all walk-ons that existed are currently grandfathered in but when they all leave, no more walk-ons will be allowed, only the 105 scholarship guys.

So, how did that work?
We're granted an extra 20 scholarships and instead of recruiting HS or portal to fill those we give to walk-ons??
OR
Did they become "official" after NSD and there was no other way to "fill" the scholarships outside of giving hand outs to current walk ons/practice guys??
legit question....I'm not familiar with the timing of all that.

tampering. This is why the portal method at Clemson will be somewhat ineffective
Nov 18, 2025, 1:26 PM

from an "elite level get's" perspective. Unless you have a player that just has a desire to play at Clemson and is hoping they'll reach out to him after he's in the portal. Until tampering is severely penalized (the player, agents, and schools) then you'll be in that second tier class for the Joe Burrows, Jahmir Gibbs, and Mateer's.
Dabo said he will wait til the player is in the portal before he will waste any time. Whereas the UGA's, OSU's, Bama's, Texas's of the world will field those calls from those players' agents outside of the portal designations. Its just the way it will be unless there are penalties, fines, etc. levied on the offenders. IT would also cut down on the transfers if a kid is having to guess if he'll be going to a better opportunity. The way it stands now these guys know what opportunity they're going into well before they enter the portal. Entering the portal to the elite players is just a formality..filing the proper paperwork.
For example Riley (the Duke Qb) that went to Notre Dame. Did he just blindly enter the portal hoping for a better opportunity? Or did he know that if he jumped that Notre Dame was going to pick him up? I'd assume the latter. And if no one is going to police it then it will just be the way it is.

he's saying if a kid is not good enough to play they will be benched but not kicked off the team (or run off). But they can still stay, be a back up and get a degree. However, playing time and money outweigh a degree for the majority of kids today and they will hit the portal and leave on their own in those situations. Think Kelly Bryant.

Again, if he doesn’t do what’s necessary to get his program out of the flaming dumpster fire it’s currently in, he will be gone after 26’.
He has more than earned the right to prove he knows how to succeed in the modern era. Even though it’s half a decade late.
We will know sometime in January what the 26 season will be.

Agreed. Cant keep under performing like this. Too much at stake with the revenue situation not only in the ACC but the move to one or two mega conferences.
