Wes needs to go. I’m tired of seeing poor effort with no repercussions on defense. We had a two of the highest rated linebackers in the country entering the season and now they can’t tackle or cover anyone, that’s on coaching. Wes is not a winning coordinator, he wants to play conservative with a lead and it’s cost Clemson 2 games this year. On Miami’s last drive in regulation, we’re allowing chunk plays that is a result of having all day to throw the ball. He never sends the blitz when we’re ahead, he wants to sit back and keep everything in front. Wes is SOFT and he’s allowing our defense to be soft too. It’s time to go out and find another coordinator.

The pumpers think the defense was gassed.
In reality, they just got dominated by an average Miami OL (granted, it was better than Clemson's but that is a low bar).
Remember, they (the pumpers) have to come to the defense of any player, coach or unit that underperforms and gets criticized.

Until the 4th quarter yes. They were gassed at that point. But why talk about one game? This defense has been elite this year.

The defense, from the beginning of the second quarter, spent about 33 of 45 minutes on the field. In the third quarter, they were on the field for just short of 10 minutes. And the defense spent 13:40 out of 15 minutes on the field. Their wear started showing in the fourth quarter. That was when Miami pulled even. Think about it; they spent nearly 2/3 of the game on the field while an inept offense kept fumbling, allowing sacks, throwing interceptions and committing drive killing penalties. Just so you know, they entered the game as the fifth ranked defense in the country. They played that way until the fourth quarter. Yeah, I’d say they were gassed

Time of possession is irrelevent when it comes to fatigue, it's number of snaps. The defense had only played 35 snaps when we went up by 10 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd. That's not a lot.

Our defense was on the 37:30 to their 22:30 despite an only taking 3 more snaps. While holding them to the same points in regulation. The offense is the problem. Full stop.

They gave up 17 points in regulation. It might not be great against a back up QB, but it wasn't a bad performance. You give up 17 points and you should win every time.

I doubt it. The defense is statistically doing okay. Even with the handicapped stats that compare you against your competition appropriately. I want him gone because they just don’t pass the eye test but if there’s one thing Dabo can do it’s find a stat that reflects positively and Wes is doing fine as far as that goes

They haven’t been the weak link, but they’re definitely a problem. We haven’t played any elite QB or RB that has truly tested the defense. I am willing to bet you can put any high school d coordinator in Goodwin’s place and have the same stats so far this year. He doesn’t have any dog in him.

I agree with your assessment. This D hasn't played a decent or even good quarterback this year.
Wait until Hartman and Mayes get ahold of this defense next month. It could get ugly really quick.
And I shudder to think what Rattler is going to do to us. He shredded us last year.

We should have success on defense against most teams on our schedule due to talent differential alone. Goodwin holding those types of teams under 20 points isn’t really anything noteworthy. However, if we want to be elite, and be successful against other elite teams, we have to prove it against elite players. Guys like Hartmann and Maye will give us a good gauge.

Go back and review the Weak Florists game. Our "so-called" great D could not get off the field against the Weak Florists. In the 1st quarter, our D was on the field for about 12 minutes. Hence, our offense got the ball in bad starting positions and our OC called conservative plays (except for the pass that Brown dropped). This D is not nearly as good as we have been told and as we have expected. In the Miami game Dabo should hv called a T.O. to let the D rest during the 10-minute drive.

If we had Venables we would’ve won the FSU game, he would not have let Jordan Travis pass all over the field while playing back in prevent defense and allowing them to go into halftime with momentum. Venables wouldn’t have let a freshman qb have the luxury of sitting in the pocket and having time to find an open receiver at the end of the Miami game. It’s not that Wes has coached this defense to victories, his soft mindset has kept us from having 2 wins this year.

While I’m not crazy about Wes Goodwin as the coordinator, if the offense didn’t have Butterfingers, we would be 7-0. That doesn’t excuse the offense’s performance, turnovers are a lack of focus and a lack of fundamental coaching.

Trotter - 31 tackles last 4 games

The defense has been the only consistent bright spot throughout the first 7 games. Trotter has balled out the past 4 games - 31 tackles, 5 for loss, 4 breakups, a pick, a FF and 2 sacks.
What are you talking about?
I was not a fan of Wes any of last year and I am still not sold on him, but let's look at it.
The offense had the ball 6 minutes and 21 seconds in the entire 2nd half. They ran 16 plays - the entire half. The defense was gassed, missing a DE starter and lacked depth. That's not on Wes.
The secondary has played is giving up 172 passing yards per game. The 2018 National Champions gave up 190 under Venables.
The D is giving up 104 rushing yards per game, and 3.2 per carry. The 2018 National Champions gave up 102 per game.
With everything to complain, moan and groan about this season the defense is not one. The reason Miami dominated the 2nd half is because the offense couldn't stay on the field long enough for the D to have a sip of water.

Our defense has played 2 teams in 7 games that have an offense with a pulse. Trotter had a first round grade coming into the year, I’m not going to applaud him for having average stats over a 4 game period. He has not played up to his ability this year.
What I am talking about is Wes’s lack of testicular fortitude to send a blitz or get into man to man defense when we need to change momentum or make a big stop. He would rather keep everything in front and prevent a big play. Our corners and secondary is good enough to stick with most any QB/WR combo we’ll face this year, we can afford to send a blitz. Venables recognized when we needed to put pressure on a QB to change up the game, I don’t think Wes has the guts to do it. I really expected more out of the defense given the talent that we had coming in and returning.

But depending on what’s available in the off-season (Dave Aranda getting fired at Baylor), he might want to consider tapping into a well that worked before, add a co-defensive coordinator to teach better gap integrity, fundamentals, tackling, etc. Brent is a unicorn in his ability to teach the fundamentals and call a great game. Wes can call a great game and put guys in the right spot to succeed but we are lacking the on the most important parts of execution. Think how we would defend Pawl and the GT triple option, you can draw up how to defend but what made Brent so great was his ability to teach basic tackling and assignment football. That’s what we are currently missing and Dabo knows it.

i really dont think Wes is that bad, you could look at the miami game like this, through 53 minutes they had 7 points on a 1 play 80 yard run in the first quarter. the offense does nothing to put games away and leaves defense out on the field.

I've been taking #### about getting rid of him for months, and people think I'm crazy.
We need a #### near complete overhauling at position coaches at least! Get better analysts to surround better coaching, and that tell the truth. Tell it like it is. Too many folk wearing orange shades up there.
I'm not sure Dabo is down to make those moves, at least all at once. He's got to better self evaluate soon.

Ignorant? It is ignorant to replace the best DC in college football with someone with zero experience to fill that position. When Goodwin was hired we were a top 4 school in the nation, we should’ve been after a proven coach.

What he said...but the actual stats are meaningless, correct? What you think you know and see, like Trotter being lackluster is all that matters. It's Wes' fault. Doesn't matter the O has put the ball on the carpet more times than Mrs. vacuums each week.
Time of Possession has nothing to do with...nor does starting field position. It's gotta' be something so easy as Venables isn't here and Dabo hired a nobody named Wes.
I'm glad Terry Don Phillips hired a nobody.

Riley did not inherit near the talent that Goodwin did. Riley was also a proven winner at the OC position when he got the job. Can’t coach speed and I believe our offense will change when Riley gets some playmakers in the backfield and outside.

Just freshened up on Goodwin’s bio, still don’t see the qualifications to step into a top 4 DC opening. Dabo had to know Venables was going to eventually leave to be a head coach, it’s hard to believe Wes Goodwin was our best option to replace him.

who Venables tried to hire away from Clemson, and has us ranked #7 in yards allowed per game this season, should not be the DC?

From our performances, no. The stat that matters is that we’re 4-3, Goodwin is a big reason in 2 of those loses.

You have to be kidding... right? There's no way our losses are the defenses fault when the offense can't score or less hold the d@mn ball. You really expect to hold every team to under 10 points every game so the offense can bumble and fumble their azzes off to try and score?

Were you at the game vs FSU? If we went into half up 10, we would’ve won that game. Instead we rush 3 defenders and let Travis have all day to find a receiver to score before half. We should have never been in the situation with Miami period. We had 2 weeks to game plan and they trot out a freshmen QB to beat us. No pressure on him when the game was on the line.

Sure, makes total sense. The DC is responsible for the offense fumbling a gazillion times inside the 10 or better yet, just before breaking the plane. Yep...doesn't matter. He ain't Venables and you've never heard of him, so therefore he must be garbage and be replaced by one of the three (how many DCs' can you actually name), but yeah, by one of those guys! Dang, you really need to get Dabo's ear.

Have you even bothered to read Goodwin’s bio? Do you or anyone else believe we could’ve replaced BV with someone better? Names?

The defense and Wes are not the problem. In modern day football if you hold the opposition to 17 points you will win most of the time. The offense in sad. No imagination, no execution, inconsistent. too many penalties on the offensive line at critical times and way too many turnovers. I have no answer but it is hard to watch and not any fun at all.

Agreed. It is really bonkers that he was even given the DC job. All those other coaches on the D side, how in the world did THEY accept that as well? An analyst with ZERO experience given the job/title over them????
My butt would have said "congrats" as I'm walking out the door to another job ANYWHERE else in the country. Maybe says something about about those coach's self-worth/confidence....
Go Tigers!!!

The one thing on our team that isn’t trash and you want to change that? If we had an offense that could score with the defense we have now we would be in the hunt for the NC

Yeah, let's bash the only consistent light we've had all year. But wait a minute...they let Miami run the ball down there throats after being on the field for basically 75% of an entire half. They should've ate their Wheaties and gosh dang it, Wes didn't have a get back coach, and he wasn't spitting fire.
Your post is utterly ridiculous, but I'm sure you will keep clinging on to the notion. Meanwhile, in the real world, I'll keep believing our defense will give us a chance in every remainder game if the offense can execute.

I agree, our defense will give us a chance in every game. They have so far and they’ll continue to do that because we still have elite talent on defense. It’s not because Goodwin has a mastermind game plan.

Yes, he is a good x and o guy but not the charismatic motivator that BV was. He did not adjust to the inexperienced QB Miami used. His players underperform for him-easy to see. BV would never let Miami drive on us like they did in the 4th quarter. Like the national Media said Dabo’s promotion from inside has not worked

Got to admit that sending pressure on the young true freshman QB would have affected him all game. Even a late hit right out the box. I know Coach V is gone, but anybody studying under him should at least send pressure considering the QB first collegiate start. Now on to the offense...straight bigger load of crap!
