One might argue he pales as to vocal talents compared to a Pavarotti. Maybe Mick Jagger is more entertaining on stage.
To understand the luv for ELVIS you must first accept him as the "KING".

Best what? Elvis was many things but is not in the Top 5 singers, certainly not composers or song writers but he was a great entertainer.

Facts disagree with you as over one billion records sold and 146.5 million certified albums.

I saw him perform 3 times and he was the best music entertainer I have ever seen or heard. I would put Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond up there as well. Saw them all several times. Listening to them on recordings or radio or tv is not the same as seeing them perform live on stage.
His rise from a poor kid from the deep south to a world wide star has to be one of the greatest human interest stories ever. Loretta Lynn fills the female role to a poor Appalachian nobody to world wide fame.
There's many great human interest stories among the country music singers. Hank Williams is probably the Elvis of Country music. Literally, Drank himself to death.

Not in the Top 5? In the 70 +/- years since he started, the field has grown, but who is his competition as to male "pop" or rock singers? Freddie Mercury, Roy Orbison, Nat King Cole (pop?), Bing Crosby (pop?), Ray Charles...
For my part, when it comes to rock, the only person that I think could really compete would be Freddy Mercury. Roy Orbison probably had a greater range and perhaps this should be the objective standard, but he comes in no better than 3rd for me.

Many others were technically better singers or musicians.
But never in history of man has there been the absolute star appeal of that man. All over the world his crowds refused to leave the building. To this day that has never happened again. “Elvis has left the building” is a cliche joke today. But it was true to frickin’ life for him, they had to make that announcement every night or people would not leave.
Say what you will of his talent. Bemoan his artistry. But he did what is most important, fill the seats and sale records.

No question. All other singers in the same genre are a distant second.

No…not in the top 20 for me at least. My mom certainly loved him and he rose to stardom at just the right time…5 or 6 years later and he would have been lost in the pack. He was a great entertainer though.

Yes. He was the right man at the right time and his impact on modern music cannot be understated or debated. Even if one was to dislike him (how that’s even possible I don’t know?) you still have to give him his due credit for how he changed music and opened the door for basically everything that has come after.

Best ever what? Singer? Nope. Entertainer? Nah. Musician? Laughable.

He was a great celebrity who came along at the right time.
His cultural impact was undeniable however. But he was quickly surpassed by MANY MANY MANY who came after.

Who? Perhaps I need to re- read the op but only one poster gave a name with MJ, who was an unbelievable entertainer, but so far no other names. So who is the competition?

As a musician, #### near, everybody is better than Elvis.
As a singer, there are countless rock stars with far better voices far better range and far better character… Mick Jagger, Roger Daltry, Ozzy Osbourne, Freddie Mercury, Prince, James Brown, at least two of the Beatles… I could go on, but the list would be too long.
As an entertainer? Prince, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Frank Sinatra, hell even Garth Brooks was a better entertainer.
Elvis‘s greatest gift was the timing in which he arrived on the scene.

You're one of the few people I am aware of that would say Jagger is even a good singer. Ozzy? Why don't you throw in Milli Vanili? LOL Clearly we're on a topic too subjective for much consesus.

Elvis is a mediocre singer. There are tons of singers with more character and better voices… Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, and Roger Daltry could #### better vocals than Elvis.
He also isn’t a songwriter. Like I said, his place in culture is sealed because of his timing, but he is nowhere near the top when it comes to musicians songwriter, or singers… He was an elite level entertainer.
He’s basically just super safe music for old people.
