weighing in with my bball $.02

Jan 10, 2014, 11:39 AM

First, let me say that I am neither a bball pumper or dumper. Honestly, I rarely have an opinion on Clemson bball either way. I do watch the games because I enjoy all Clemson athletics but I don't have any unrealistic expectations of us going over .500 in the conference and making the dance.

That said, I believe the lack of fan support and interest has to be placed to some degree on Brownell. Slowing the game down to a drag and attempting to win by playing solid defense and keeping the score in the 50's or less may keep us close in some games but it is not exciting to watch. If Brownell was winning 75% of these games fans would stay interested and excited. Danny Ford proved this. He ran a very boring, bland offense and won his games on incredible D. Had Danny been winning less than 50% of his games he would have been fired quickly.

OP did have some success with wins and losses but I think his biggest positive was he provided an exciting/entertaining brand of basketball. Even if Clemson lost a game by 20 points I left the building entertained. The Brownell games are lacking any form of entertainment value. Watching our offense run the "Harlem Globetrotter weave" around the top of the key for 20 seconds before jacking up a terrible shot is not going to keep any fans interested.

The only two solutions I see to gathering fan support are winning most of our games (this is not going to happen anytime soon) or changing up the brand of basketball to accomodate more entertainment value.

hopefully, the new AD likes offense. after suffering through

Jan 10, 2014, 11:46 AM

barnes, purnell and brownell, i can't remember what it's like to have a coach that puts more emphasis on scoring baskets and less on making clemson's basketball product the most boring thing since the invention of the shot clock.

FAT TAX NOW!

so running and shooting the ball when you cross half court is what you consider good basketball huh.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes, that's exactly what i mean. lol brilliant.

Jan 10, 2014, 11:54 AM

what i'm saying is that this team is no better than the team he inherited 4 years ago. we have not taken a single step forward in 4 years. it's time to realize that.

FAT TAX NOW!

if you don't think defense has improved...

Jan 18, 2014, 8:05 PM

you don't know basketball.

Defense has helped us win a lot of games this year.

Sure, lots of points is exciting to watch, but defense play a large part of the game.

Key point in any game is....does not matter how many points you score as long as you don't let the other team score more.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hey ! We're winning games at the Free Throw Line ! That is

Jan 18, 2014, 8:54 PM [ in reply to yes, that's exactly what i mean. lol brilliant. ]

something totally unique to Clemson hoops and I don't care who the coach was.

I can remember vividly the huge fan discontent with Oliver Purnell's coaching every time we'd lose a high scoring dunk fest simply because our guys couldn't play defense with a machine gun.

How many times has the other team's strategy been to send us to the line in a tight game so we could fritter away a slim lead shooting FT bricks?

This team is definitely much, much better than the one that Brownell inherited.

How can you say this team is no better than 4 yrs. ago when we're 13 -4 with almost half the season left ?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If I want to be entertained I'll go to a movie ...

Jan 10, 2014, 11:48 AM

I want Clemson to win, regardless of the offensive scheme. Whether Brownell can win consistently we've yet to see.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

actually, we've seen that he can't. in 4 years, the program

is no better off than when he arrived.

Really? We're tied for 2nd in the ACC with no seniors

and 3 skilled offensive players joining the team next year. Plus, we have our first, NBA first round talent since Trevor.

Meanwhile the #2 team in the Nation plays #22 and both score in the 50's. Good basketball is often low scoring.

Made that point on another thread. Some Clemson fans are

Jan 18, 2014, 8:36 PM

sadly clueless when it comes to hoops

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So its better to look good and lose????

Jan 10, 2014, 11:50 AM

Is that you Sidney Deane?

You are right that winning cures all ills, so let him find a style that he thinks he can recruit to. If he's not sure he can continue to find up-tempo athletes then he's got to run what he thinks the players can handle. Obviously he thinks its more important to limit possessions than get into a scoring battle with the Dukes of the world. Barnes used a slow style. People were entertained and frustrated at the same time.

Re: So its better to look good and lose????

Jan 10, 2014, 12:03 PM [ in reply to So its better to look good and lose???? ]

my first point agrees with you. Winning cures all. If we score 40 points a game but win 75% of our conference games then most rational fans will not be upset. Unfortunately, we can all agree that winning 75% of our games is not an option.

That said, if Brownell is asking for crowd support he is going to have to provide something entertaining to support. Losing is tough no matter the score but losing and only scoring 40 points a game is unbearable for most fans.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

People are going nuts...

Jan 10, 2014, 12:39 PM

because we only scored 41 pts last night. Was it bad...yep, sure was. BUT, we have averaged around 67 per game to our opponents 50 pts per game.

Imo, people need to calm down and see what happens after a couple of more games. You can not judge a team by one game when they have won 10 this yr.

Re: People are going nuts...

Jan 10, 2014, 12:54 PM

Won 10 with our best win being a sub .500 SC team??

Have we even beat a team with a winning record?

I think we all knew coming into this season that Clemson was LOADED with shooters and expected a fast paced, up and down the court, slam dunk kind of game so this playing defense crap is making me sick.

So Points = Excitement??

Jan 18, 2014, 7:51 PM

Then why does the NBA suck but put up 230 pts per game? Speaking of football, forcing a 3rd and out is one of the most exciting things the football team does. Likewise, one of the most frustrating things in BBall is watching the other team fast breaking and scoring at will. If you don't think it's fun to watch this team, BBall might not be your thing. KJ is the biggest highlight reel CU has ever had. Watching 5'10 Jordan Roper skywalk and tomahawk jam is freaking awesome. We have a 6'11 Center can can J the 3ball. Most exciting of all to me... we hit free throws and win games. Winning puts meat in the seats, not points.

Coach BB was one HECK of a hire.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow, different strokes for different folks. Exciting is to

Jan 18, 2014, 8:00 PM

see Clemson win. You set game plans to take advantage of the players you have. Would be stupid to have run with Duke. Would you have been entertained losing by 20+ points to them vs winning by 13 just by us running all game? Also Purnell drove me crazy watching him press every opponent's possession even if they were breaking the press and making layup after layup. It never changed. Win and the crowds will come. Personally Brownell is doing a heck of a job. JMO.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We had 168 empty seats today, looks like a good turnout

Jan 18, 2014, 8:07 PM

to me

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

are you blind to the improvement?

Jan 18, 2014, 9:32 PM

and the the potential for the future?

already matched the win total for last season - and it's Jan 18th. how can you complain with that much improvement?

next year everyone returns (if KJ comes back) and Brad B is bringing in some scoring talent - should be even better.

i think you're way off the mark with the slow/fast - exciting/boring dichotomy.

if you weren't entertained today, then you're not a basketball fan. why bother watching?

Re: weighing in with my bball $.02

Jan 18, 2014, 10:24 PM

I'm pretty sure Coach Brownell will do what HE thinks gives Clemson Basketball the best option to win, regardless
of what you other fans think. If you think he is looking at these moronic posts about trying to 'entertain' fans and would consider changing his style to make you happy you might want to think again. I am guessing that Coach Brownell will continue to work his @ss off like he has been doing and try to find a way to recruit and win at a football school in arguably the toughest basketball conference in the country.

Personally, I don't think it is Coach Brownells
Responsibility to change his mindset- I think it is the fans responsibility to embrace a coach who is going to give his program the best chance to win. If fans can't think outside their box and get behind him so be
It, he will leave or get fired and other universities will be in line to nab him.

They have the best defense in the country, they are 4-1 in the ACC (and yes it does get MUCH tougher). I am not sure what the complaint is.

Let me Give you something to compare this to:
Last week the NE Patriots, who have one of the best, maybe the best, QB in the league ran the ball 40 something times vs. passing the ball much less even though the league is now built around the pass. Do you think Coach Billichek cares? NO- he's gonna do what gives him the best chance to win. He had Tom Brady's total support.

Coaches coach
Players play
Good fans support
Uneducated fans try to find bad things about programs and teams when there really aren't bad things to find.

Some things take time, maybe you should exercise some
PATIENCE!
