I don’t think so. Look at the great teams right now. They are at the top of the recruiting rankings. Ohio State, Alabama, etc. look at the portal teams… FSU, USCjr, Colorado, etc. I would never want a team full of paid 1 and done players.

Name a single player that was in the portal that you thought back in December last year was better than what we had returning or coming in via portal (Heldt and Smith). That’s what is so strange about this year is even our oline was highly regarded and experienced coming into this year and they have sucked out loud. It isn’t a player talent problem it’s a coaching problem whether that’s technique or effort or culture. Even CV had a solid game last week and I was super suspect of him going in but it was the oline and entire defense that crapped the bed and there is highly regarded talent on that defense (preseason 3 guys in NFL first round kind of talent).

You don't think the portal had better than what we had??????
unless you're a coach w/ access to resources to explore the details of the portal or "portal possibilities" you wouldn't have known of Heldt or Smith...............the PLAYERS are OUT THERE............ask Indiana, GT, Vandy, etc....

That's not the argument. The op said that recruiting doesn't matter anymore and it's all about the portal. The other poster was pointing out that the top teams are still the ones who recruit well and use the portal as a supplement. The programs that build almost exclusively by the portal might have a good year or so, but then they're back to being mediocre again.

You have to do both , these top schools have recruited well but also used the portal well. Recruiting alone will not work because it still takes time to develop kids out of high school . Dabo could have added help from portal at LB, safety, running back and it would have been a far different story most likely .

Who is Ohio States best defensive player and did he come from the portal or by recruiting?
You either need to be Top 5 in recruiting year over year or be very good in recruiting and hit the portal selectively for difference makers.
You can’t be just pretty good in recruiting and below average in the portal and hope to make the playoffs.
The portal has become the second chance recruiting venue where you find players to upgrade your talent if you missed during high school recruiting.

Just with different nuances. You still have to look at what you need, who is available, and convince them to play for you. As a coach you have to think am I deep enough at this position where I can bring in a 3* freshman and only give him $50K in NIL and develop him or do I need to hit the portal and bring in a 4/5* upper classman and have to fork out several hundreds of thousands.
With the current roster limit of 105, you're basically building a team 4 deep at every position. So you have to know where you need immediate help, where you can bring in and develop, and most of all how much you have to spend. I think that's why a lot of schools are adding a GM to their staff. I mean it's basically the NFL.

Questions: If 3 of our can't miss "pre-season" 1st round NFL defensive players (you figure out who I'm talking about) had entered the portal before this season, they would have had their pick of a new team. And, if these players performed on their new team as they have so far for Clemson this year, would you say they were TP failures or successes. The TP giveth and the TP taketh...it, and HS recruiting are both 'unscientific crap shoots"! What say you?
