Was the portal necessary for DJ?

Somebody help me here.
When a player gets his degree, his connection, affiliation, commitment to his school, from an athletic scholarship standpoint, is finished, right?
If Uiagalelei is graduating in December, all he would have to do to be eligible to play for another school is to say "I'm enrolling elsewhere as a grad student." Before the portal (and since), guys like Russell Wilson and Jalen Hurts changed schools without any sort of waiver because they were enrolling as graduate students.
Is this just for buzz?

.... (as if there are nay rules today) but DJ, once he gets his degree this month is free to transfer by the "graduate transfer" rule. It is my understanding he wouldn't have to enter the portal.
But, there may be some reason to do so. He can enter the portal today? When is graduation this month at Clemson? It could give him a few days headstart. If that makes any difference.

He may need to, because the school he chooses, lets just say UCLA, does not offer any graduate classes any different than what Clemson has to offer then he cannot just transfer without entering the portal.

Or without moving down a division.
I worked at a D2 school without a graduate program that got a former Clemson WR (with a year of eligibility) who enrolled for a "second bachelors degree." Um, sure. He played four games and broke his jaw.

He probably already knows where he's going. That's the plan as they say. What I don't understand is how these football players can graduate in 3 years now? Heck, I was lucky to finish in 4 years back in good old 1979 and I didn't have the time commitment that football takes.

which the AP exams can get you 16 hrs by themselves.
BUT..it comes at a price
It was hard for me starting off freshman year at 8 am straight into Organic chemistry followed by Math science 206.

In the 90s, they reduced the required credit hours for many degrees. Most are around 120 now and the highest is 130 (instead of 144 or so like it was in the 70s and 80s).

You know how.... Degrees are nothing more than a simple piece of paper, that has been exponentially overpriced. I know people whose GPA wouldn't have been more than a 1.5 if there parents didn't write big checks to the universities. Athletes bringing in millions for the university gives them a pass on the bad grades because they get good ones on Saturdays.

I've had the same question for a few years. Me thinks it's because the degrees they are "awarded" are not quite the same level of difficulty.

the portal is not anything

new "conceptually"
The transfer system has been around for decades.. it was recently renamed the "transfer portal" and made more visible. even grad transfers use it like Hunter Johnson.

The purpose of the portal is to (help) keep other schools

from recruiting players off another schools roster.
The whole purpose is to create a black and white line as to when the other schools are allowed to start recruiting the transferring player.
I would guess that in the old days (prior to the portal) other schools could not recruit you until you finished all of your classes with a passing grade.

That is NOT the purpose of the portal

the portal is for the students to secure their future in whatever way they feel necessary. Since the schools were not allowed to pay them, the portal became a way for kids to get the money they feel they deserve.

Yes. He is making it clear that he is available to all universities in the nation. It's more practical to do it that way.

You aren't wrong, but they seem to have pushed graduate transfers into the portal process.
Hell, we cited Hunter Johnson as evidence that we someone utilize the portal and, of course, he was a grad transfer.
The way I would say it... DJU is entering the portal. But before the portal was a thing, he would have been eligible as an immediate grad transfer.
