First, a comment. In Q1 of the SMU game, it was obvious that Vizz’s check-down pass targets were not really ‘check-downs.’ They were first option routes where Vizz was preordained to throw the ball. So the following comment excluded Q1 of tge SMU game.

Vizz ‘sells’ the check-down psss better than CK2. This is a natural by-product of Vizz’s greater patience and scan-the-field ability. It takes longer to go all the way through the progressions before resorting to the check-down outlet. With CK2, his decision to resort to the check-down option is so quick because he pretty much limits his ‘scan the field’ routine to looks for his ‘security blanket’ Target I.e., Wesco or A.Williams, and then resorting to his check-down.

This matters as far as the effectiveness of the check-down decision. DBs or LBs who have the responsibility to cover the check-down guy are more likely to back away from the LoS as the QB looks away from the check-down receiver. The longer that QB looks downfield, the less attention that he pays to his coverage responsibility to the check-down option.

CK2 ~ telegraphs his decision to go to his check-down target. He uses it so fast that the check-down pass can hardly be completed before the tackler hits the guy who catches the check-down pass.
Vizz’s check-down pass gets completed such that the defender must make more of an open field tackle, which is a much harder task to achieve, than teeing off on a guy who had just barely caught the pass.
