Vacation suggestions pls

Me and the wife are looking for a vacation this fall. Something like Wild Dunes / IOP where we rent a condo, have beach access, eat seafood, see interesting shops and maybe some historical sites. Do you have another place you like? The budget is fairly tight so Kiawah is out

Emerald Isle, NC. Really clean place with bicycle paths and not overly crowded beaches.

Savannah, to me, is more interesting than Charleston, especially for it's preservation. It "feels" like it's been there for a long time. And it has all the other things you're looking for and is a whole lot more reasonable. Just my opinion, good luck!

For a couple, the Westin is a great place to stay. It is across the river from River Street but there is a water taxi that runs to downtown. It’s away from the crowds but really quick (5 min ride across the river) to downtown without having to drive. The Olde Pink House is a great restaurant with a lot of history.

Litchefield is hard to beat. Not as many people on the beach I don't think, although on my last trip down I never went to the beach. Mrs. Spud and coot=n-laws did, but I spent every day fishing....Call Jimmy Smith Realty, they have a lot of rentals.

Cabin rental near Asheville and spend a day at Biltmore House. Though seafood in the area is not plentiful.
If you've never been, it'll become obvious George Vanderbilt spared no expense, incorporating cutting edge amenities for that era into the house. He was quite a party man and built the house primarily for entertaining friends. He built his own railroad to the location during construction and had it removed when it was finished. Also worth noting, he made his fortune the old fashioned way, through inheritance.

The 30A area of Florida is absolutely beautiful. Since you are planning a fall trip it will be more affordable that time of year as well.

GWV used most of his fortune building the estate and died only a few yeats after its completion. It was the first residence in the US to have a walkin cooler. Recommend the book "The Last Castle" by Denise Kiernan. It relates how his wife managed to hold onto the place after his death among other interesting commentary. I first saw it on a 7th grade trip in 1960.

Wild Dunes and IOP are almost as expensive as Kiawah. I would do Edisto. Affordable and easy drive to Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head, and Savannah.

Amelia Island Florida.
1. Fernandina Beach 2. Not too far away and never crowded 3. Fort Clinch state park is historic and beautiful 4. Old historic district is filled with shops and restaurants and historic houses and buildings 5. Budget friendly, usually get a condo for $200/night 6. No traffic and no stress 7. Plenty of seafood especially shrimp 8. Beach is never crowded

I second Amelia Island. I usually hang out at Hilton Head or Kiawah. Decided to try Amelia. I cannot believe that I waited so long to go there.

If you are a Vet and don't mind the drive check to see if you can stay in the Guest Quarters on the Navy Base in Key West. Might have to shuffle your dates. But it is real economical and lots of things to do and see. I did this a couple of years ago and had a wonderful time. The wife and I plan to return, God willing, in 2023.

Try Seabrook. Right on the other side of the circle from Kiawah. Just as nice, beaches are actually much better. Still have access to the local restaurants and activities. If you want to access Kiawah for a "splurge" night out at one of their restaurants you just make a reservation.

Have enjoyed Ocean Isle a number of times. Regretted they closed the golf course near the bridge. Was convenient to hit 9 a couple of evenings.

DestinPanama City FL area. Gulf beaches are so much nicer than Atlantic Ocean beaches. And this is from a guy that grew up on Johns Island when Kiawah was still family owned and there was only one house on the island.

Eduardo…or you might try Seabrook, which is just the south side of the same ‘island’ as Kiawah…generally cheaper with a lot of one and two bedroom villas and condos. We’ve vacationed there for the past 12 years or so and love it.

I would suggest Beaufort. Plenty of history and more reasonable than IOP/Wild Dunes. It's 45 miles to Savannah for a day trip.

Longboat key between Anna Maria Island and Sarasota on the gulf side of Florida. Beautiful beach and not crowded even in the summer. Sarasota is very close and there are some really good restaurants nearby. We went several years in a row in July and the condo prices weren’t bad for a week there. I also agree with Key West and the drive from Miami. Beautiful scenery

Have vacationed on the IOP for over 40 years, and it

remains my favorite.
However, a few weeks ago, I stayed on Folly Beach, celebrating my oldest grandson's graduation from the COC and his engagement. First time I had been on Folly in years, and actually enjoyed its old school atmosphere, I particularly enjoyed being able to travel by golf cart along with the hosts of dining and bar venues. The drive to and fro on Folly Beach Road off U.S. 17 wasn't as bad as I expected. Still favor the IOP due to its access and because I like Mt. Pleasant with the access to Charleston across the Ravenel Bridge, Although I've stayed in Wild Dunes, even taking my boat several times, we generally like the Sea Cabin Condos from where we can easily walk to venues.
Good luck with your plans.
