USS Clemson DD-186

I’m just learning about this vessel. With a service life from 1919-1945 she saw action in the Mexican - American War as well as WW II. However she was not named for anyone related to Clemson University. For those not familiar a DD is a destroyer.

Being an old tin can sailor myself I found the reading on this ship interesting. What I read on Wiki is that the ship’s bell is “privately owned in Clemson, South Carolina.” Does anyone know if it’s held by CU and on display anywhere on campus ?

It is privately-owned in Clemson. Hopefully, they will donate it to the University someday.

Screw Calford.

It would be a nice add to the Scroll of Honor area.***

According to Wikipedia it was Named for Henry A. Clemson (12 July 1818 – 8 December 1846) was an officer in the United States Navy in the early 19th century. Clemson died at sea during the Mexican American War (1846) and was memorialized on the Mexican War Midshipmen's Monument at the Naval Academy and the naming of a naval destroyer, USS Clemson (DD-186).

I could find no family connection between Henry and Thomas G Clemson, but they might be distantly related. So, no real connection to the University other than the name.
