Unpopular Opinion

Oct 23, 2022, 9:16 AM

I know my pulse will probably take a hit for this, but this is my opinion on yesterday - I think the coaching staff is largely to blame for yesterday. Looking at the stat line, you would think 60 runs and 25 passes would indicate we maybe ran the ball too much. Well, thats where the saying comes from - there’s lies, ###### lies and statistics. We were killing them in the run game - particularly right up the gut. If we run the ball 85 times, I think we win going away. I kept thinking, where is Danny Ford when you need him? It would not have been sexy, but we would have had 2 less turnovers, likely no qb controversy and I would guess a pretty comfortable 17 point win.

Where did you think the turnovers play in to the game?

Oct 23, 2022, 9:23 AM

Yes I get it fits your running proposition but Syracuse doesn’t score what they do without turnovers. That needs to stop. Hasn’t been much of an issue. As for running every down becomes a lot easier to defend when you know exactly what we are doing. Danny Ford had some great teams and that was a great era of football but I also think Dabo has earned the right to run his program. Don’t get me wrong not saying he is perfect and we shouldn’t hypothesize and critique and internet sport board. But to say Danny would come in and dominate that game is, well, ludicrous

We consistently ran it against the three man front... When some of the three LBs walked up, we threw it. Hats off to Cuse for having the patience to play like they did knowing they would give up 4 yards per carry, but hoping we would lose patience and pass it when the numbers favored the run.

Thats the chess match.... and it almost worked for them.

Reasonable response. No question turnovers made the game and that is both atypical for us this year and needs to stop.

Don’t get me wrong about my Ford comments, I don’t want Danny over Dabo. To me, he is inarguably the greatest coach in program history. I would not trade him for Danny, or ANYONE else for that matter. For this game, though, I think the stubborn, run the ball mentality was needed, and would have led to better outcome.

As for your point that it becomes easier to defend, that is true, but we were already heavily unbalanced and they still had no answer.

Back to my original statement, my opinion and not expecting it to be popular.

And this is why it was the perfect opportunity to get Cade some meaningful playing time. Not a lot of pressure on the QB to make throws. And Cade is a more natural runner than DJ. The game situation and opponent’s weakness against the run set this up perfectly.

Totally agree. Also why I think those calling for a qb change are overrating Cade’s performance. He was better, undoubtedly, but not enough to bench a player who has played pretty well this season. Cade was 2/4 for 19 yds and a qbr of 49. He also took a bad sack and should probably have had an int. That is not enough for me to say a change is clearly necessary.

I see it that way too. And it may open the door for more situational playing time for Cade. If we get a lead and are playing a team we can run the ball on putting him in to close it out makes sense.

We didn’t take advantage of playaction when they were walking their safeties into the box.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

You did not mention Big Cinco fumble.

Nor the Shipley fumble. That is 2 t/o in 60 plays. On the 25 pass plays, we had that same amount.

Our most crippling turnover of the game came

Oct 23, 2022, 9:32 AM

on a running play...

EXACTLY what I said during the game.

Oct 23, 2022, 9:59 AM

Until a team shows they can stop the run, run the d@mn ball!

they stopped the run at the end of the game when it counted

Oct 23, 2022, 10:12 AM

it wasn't enough, but they did stop us

Yep

Oct 23, 2022, 10:46 AM

Why make it easy on the D by giving them so little of the field to defend.

Win in the turnover battle and that game would not have been close. 14 point swing on 1 of those and -3 on the day and still won.

MEG

The game was called to near perfection.

Oct 23, 2022, 10:48 AM

DJ and Ship had rushing fumbles as well, one of the for a 95 yard TD.

Motion denied.

On possessions where it's 2nd and 9 or 3rd and 7

Run the ball? No.

Great adjusted game plan. It's the reason we won.

I think you underestimate how much Danny Ford threw the ball too. He also took what the D gave him. Even with Rodney (not a good passer) he threw it when the D gave it. Go look up the Citrus Bowl against Peen State on YouTube and you’ll see what I mean.

It was not all run all the time with Danny. He was very conservative deep in his own territory. But he knew how to win with special teams, field position and stout defense. He would’ve NEVER gone for it on that 4th down. He would’ve taken the near automatic 3 with Potter.

I love Dabo but there are things he could learn from Danny. Danny knew exactly what to do on short yardage. Goal line short yardage is not the place to run a slow footed QB with ball security problems. Danny would’ve fed Shipley 3 times down on the goal line and avoided that 14 point swing. Mafah is a big bruiser but he takes several steps to catch his head of stream. Ship is quick and explosive and has a nose for the goal line.

But Danny threw the ball situationally a good bit, especially with Fuller and Homer, and even Rodney (not a great passer), and when you consider that was just a different era.
