Unpopular but accurate assessment

Apr 11, 2022, 8:21 PM

DJ really gave it his best. You don't lose that much weight and get in shape if you're not 110%. Unfortunately it's not enough. I don't know if we missed it recuriting or he got the permayips, but he just doesn't have the talent to play at the elite offense level to which Clemson normally does. More importantly, after the Spring Game, he knows it, too. I doubt the conversations have officially happened, but DJ will spend the first few getting as much tape as possible but we'll gradually see less of him and more of Klub as he gets worked into the O more; starting with more gadget plays then working into the starter role. DJ is not meant to be a backup; he's got plenty of talent to be an exceptional QB at non-playoff hopeful schools within the Power 5. He'll hit the portal by game 3 or 4. Klub and our DEF will get us into the playoffs this year.

Why do you say it isn’t enough?

Apr 11, 2022, 8:22 PM

Dabo made it clear he’s still the starter.

Now it’s his job to keep it. He has a real chance to do that.

Apr 11, 2022, 8:32 PM

There was no marked improvement in DJ from last year. We all hoped he would, but he doesn't. He just doesn't have elite caliber skills; or either it's going to take longer than we have to dig them out.

But of course Dabo is going to give him the starting job. He's the senior man on the roster, and has a season of experience under his belt. It was his job to start with so it's his job to lose. Losing it, however, is an inevitability. It is only a matter of 4, 3, or 2 games.

He has the physical skills, but his decision making is slow.
Unfortunately, I agree with you.
Cade made decisions quickly, and transitioned quickly like DW or Taj. Good touch and accurate passing.
He will end up moving the chains, which leads to long drives and scores, not punts…

I hope DJ figures it all out this summer or we will have a KB situation in the fall…..

I missed the first series, but the first pass I saw from DJ

Apr 11, 2022, 9:09 PM

was on a rope to a receiver on the sideline...whom he stared down the entire play. Just can't do that against elite DEFs and it hasn't changed with him.

Re: I missed the first series, but the first pass I saw from DJ

Apr 11, 2022, 10:16 PM

The first series he had a wide open receiver down the right side. He overthrew it. It's on you tube so you can watch it. Anyway, he throws that leading the receiver inside a tad, it's probably a TD. That said, it was the first series and I have no idea if the receiver ran the right route, was too slow or what. I've noticed it appears that he misses right sideline a lot more than going to his left.

I'm not a coach, expert or anything of the sort. I leave that to you guys. It's clear he's not dw4 or tl16 esq. But he can make elite throws, just not consistent enough, yet. Like the OP, we'll see what it looks like at GA tech.

IDK how you can be lights out @ND in spot duty and then just regress that much to where you can’t throw a normal pass. And then all these practice reports where he is hitting everything and then you do nothing in spring game. Kid has got to turn it on. Its perplexing.

I saw a QB who has worked hard to get in better shape

Apr 11, 2022, 11:08 PM [ in reply to Did you see something on Saturday the rest of us didn't? ]

and also improve his mechanics.

I don’t think he is where he needs to be, but he’s still well ahead of Klubnik.

Dabo is going to stick with the experienced QB, especially one who started every game last year. It’s going to take regression by DJ or eye-popping improvement by Cade for DJ to lose the starting job.

I don’t see DJ regressing. He will likely continue to improve, though probably not as significantly as we would like. If you’re expecting Cade to improve that much by this fall, all while grasping enough of the playbook to be the guy, that’s asking a lot.

I think Cade will be very good, but he reminds me more of Kyle Parker than he does Trevor Lawrence at this point. That’s not a knock on Cade, but if you’re expecting another Trevor or Deshaun as a freshman I think that’s asking a lot.

Regress??? 2021 DJ had:
- 55.6% completion
- 2,246 yards (77th)
- 9 TD (99th)
- 10 INT (92nd)
- 43.2 QBR (97th)

If DJ regresses from those numbers it won’t matter how good our D is.

I don't think Dabo will do what he did last year. He had no choice but to keep DJ in and not bench him. He had no better option on the sidelines. This year he does. Dabo is not going to waste another entire season because of below average QB play.

DJ has been given more chances to get it together than any DivI qb in the country. I have been one of his biggest fans. I've got to say he justg hasn't come thru. He was said to have got it together a qb camps and done well. But if you watch the tape of his performance in the spring game, he is still throwing int's against 2nd and third string db's and just can't seem to get it when it comes to foot work. just watch and see how many times he tried to throw off his back foot. Count how many completions he got with that. Dabo is going to have to bit the bullet and admit that DJ was a bust as a recruit and move on. It's hard to forget that we won a natty with a freshman qb who by the way was a 5* and #1 rated qb in the country when he came in ie TL. Clemson should not have to suffer thru another season with the defense winning games

and the time it takes him to make a decision with the ball still needs to improve significantly.

His weight wasn't the biggest issue. It was his timing and accuracy, and on Saturday, that did not appear to be have improved.

He just seems to be one of those kids who practices better than he plays. He practices and prepares very well but when the lights come on, that practice and preparation doesn't seem to translate to the gameday field.

Cole Stoudt started over DW4.

Kelly Bryant started over Trevor Lawrence.

Dabo has a history of going with the veteran until the younger guy takes the job from him on the field during the season.

IMO, the only patience will be to let DJU start the GT game with the best OL, best RBs, best TEs and best WRs. If that doesn't translate into improved performance, look for Klubnik to get more PT each game up to when he takes over.

But, he will have to perform.

Fortunately we don’t kick things off with such a huge game this year.

Here’s hoping the best players are always on the field. Go Tigers!

Well I agree that DJ will eventually see the bench.
But nothing from the spring game all of sudden brought this to light . After last season he is what he is . Dabo is just trying to keep him here as long as he can.

I would be excited about DJ if he was a freshman, but this is his 3rd year. Saw absolutely no improvement at the Spring game. We have already simplified the offense and "gone back to basics". Looks elite, until he actually has to play. Sad but true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Unpopular but accurate assessment

Apr 11, 2022, 11:01 PM

What you saw was a mediocre offensive line with the best player missing divided up into two teams versus an elite defensive line. I doubt that nay QB in the country would have looked real good win that scenario. DJ does miss too many fairly routine throws, but I still think he can be an elite QB. IF not, I like who we have waiting in the wings. Dabo has shown that he is not afraid to start whomever he thinks gives us the best chance to win.

Not sure why modern day fans always want to get so far ahead of themselves? DJ is obviously a concern. He may or may not be able to get it together enough to stay in front of Cade. But its still up on the air regardless of your thinking its already over.

Just wondering why you must predict the worst instead of simply letting the situation play out on its own? Is it really that important to you to predict the future that you are ok trashing our QB publicly?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Unpopular but accurate assessment

Apr 12, 2022, 8:29 AM

I am 100% in the DJ isn't our guy camp. But, to base anything off of what was seen at the spring game from either QB is disingenuous at best. Most starting receivers out, one starting RB in the game, a subpar mishmash of an O line on either offense. All of that against arguably the deepest defensive front in college football.

I will give the kid credit for working his butt off, dropping weight and working on his mechanics. I wish the best for him and hope the light comes on. If it doesn't, I like our back up.

DJ just can't seem to read a defense ?? He still stares down his receivers ?? After all the weight loss, seems to still have cement shoes on ?? Still throws the ball to hard on short routes ?? I would love to see something to change what I see, but after 3 years, just seems we are running out of time waiting, for the guy that played 2 of his best ball games in 2020,looking like an all-american first round pick !!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Unpopular but accurate assessment

Apr 12, 2022, 11:05 AM

Missing wide open receivers, weather a 1 or the worse sub off our bench is still an incomplete pass. The longer he has the more he stares down the receiver and it allows the defense time to adjust. That’s asking for pick sixes. Completions are nothing when throwing bubble screens with our lack of blocking. TDS by the pass are almost nonexistent.

Brandon Streeter Says Footwork Important

Apr 13, 2022, 5:21 AM

Brandon certainly knows the QB position well, but I'm not sure the emphasis on footwork is THAT important unless a QB is lacking. So I found it interesting when speaking about CK he mentioned the important of a young QB having good footwork. CK appears to have great legs and I think that basically translates to footwork, too. My point is the remark was directed at ALL the QB's, yep, DJ.
