UGA's recruiting class is just sad this year

Jul 8, 2017, 2:46 PM

Outside of ZW they do not have a single top 300 player committed to them. I do not know how anyone can run their mouth about their program because they are coming off a 7-5 season with an unproven coach and their recruiting is in the dumps. We are talking Ray Goff/ Jim Donnan type misery ahead for this program.

I am embarrassed for them.

Shhhhhhhh.....don't tell superdawg. They are about to reel in Salyer, Fields, and a number of others, might even flip Lawrence.

Well.....They are still favored to land Salyer, if they miss Fields they get 5 star corral. Top 35 adam Anderson will be coming back to them. They're in the running for several more top players. Recruiting will never be their problem. Getting a good system or coach is what's holding them back.

seems a lot of recruits are taking a wait and see approach. Another 7-5 season will not help them land these guys.

Agree 100%^

If UGA doesn't show up on the field this year in terms of W's/L's their next few recruiting classes are going to be stinky. 5-stars want an opportunity win National Championships, not an opportunity to lose the SEC LEast every year and play in the Belk Bowl

Rarely anything in between.

As much as it pains me to say this,

Jul 8, 2017, 3:37 PM

...they probably will get some or all of the following (amongst others): Trey Hill, Jamaree Salyer, Justin Fields/Matt Corral, Tyreke Johnson, James Cook, Adam Anderson, and Marquez Ezzard. But, other than OL, that is not all that uncommon for the underachieving Bulldogs.

It’s pretty common knowledge that, under the Richt years, UGA’s Achilles heel was its OL. Last year, Smart brought in 6 OL (most very highly rated). They are likely favored this year for both Hill and Salyer. I think we have a better chance with Salyer than Hill.

Yes, improvement on the OL will be the key piece that they have been missing…on the field. HOWEVER, there is a lot more to winning than that. Coaching, development, discipline, leadership, character, vision, and culture play a WAY more important role in program long-term success than talent alone. So how healthy is every other part?

Clemson has been on the ascent for a while. Clemson didn’t arrive just because we got a generational player in Watson. The rest of the team had been building too. The staff, culture, leadership, and winning expectations had to be built. Success and leadership and service off the field translates to improvement on the field. It is those things that Dabo has built, one player, coach, building, and standard at a time. Don't forget that, after the National Championship win, both Dabo and Watson basically said, "Just wait...we are going to get better...the best is yet to come." After watching Dabo build what he's built, I have no reason to doubt.

For players like Hill and Salyer, that is what Clemson offers, above its own who’s who amongst high school football stars.

Ok Balm I'll bite and disagree. Besides Ga at 62, you have Fla @ 58, Auburn @ 55 and Bama @ 48. Can't say I've ever seen that at any time during the recruiting cycle.....ever. Nevertheless we're still eight months out from NSD and I'd be willing to bet each of the above teams land no worse than top 15 classes. I wasn't happy with the 8-5 season (you forgot the bowl game) but based on what we were dealt I wasn't surprised. Richt left major holes in Kirby's roster (Oline, wr, kicking game and most importantly qb) then combine that with a new staff and new scheme and you have a recipe for disaster. Our offense struggled the entire year....The 319 points scored last season were the fewest Georgia came up with since 1998 hence the five losses. Now if we repeat that 7-5 season record in 2017 there will be major cause for concern.

Kirby's slowly building the roster and while we not there yet I expect us to improve over last season's debacle. The key will be Eason @ QB and OC Chaney's calling of the offense. Our defense returns 86% of our tackles but we need a better pass rush...but it should be good enough to make it to Atlanta for the championship....if the offense cooperates..

Also remember Smart's first class finished at #7 (note: Kirby didn't report to work till after the title game) and then he followed that up with his first full class @ #3 on Rivals and #2 on 247. So there's no reason to be embarrassed for us....like ClemAlum80 says below recruiting isn't the problem.

Maybe it is just me, but I don't really have any hate for the Dawgs, at least not like the Tarholes, Wulfies, and Vols. Maybe it is because many of my Jawja friends are great people, and having lived in Chattanooga, anything against UT made me happy. That said, I believe the Jury is still out on Kirby. I am not a big fan of their OC and his play calling, and Eason is still a work in progress, but the kid has a huge arm, and I really don't see why anyone has said Bentley is the better of the two. We will see how the O Line comes along, and frankly their WRS have not been good since Green left imo, but that is a fertile recruiting territory, and I for one hope Kirby never gets it together, otherwise they could actually have something there in Athens.

Missouri is an absolute mess. Florida can't find a quarterback, but may be the best other team in the SEC least. And crazy as it sounds, Kentucky may be in the hunt by default because with a few breaks, because they are right now, the third best team in this division.
