Transfer portal and NIL doesnt guarantee success

Look at how many teams that use the portal would love to have the success that we have on the football field. NIL may get someone for a year until another team offers them more $$$. God given talent and ability and the coaching staff’s ability to extract that talent and ability means more to success than paying a high school kid that is unproven. To state the obvious, if a player comes to your team for money, he will leave your team for money, especially if he’s not getting what he wants with playing time or whatever else he thinks he might deserve

Being right on talent evaluation in recruiting is essential. As we, and everyone else, misjudged a QB from our recent past

So what? I'll take the string of great QB's - including 2 natty winners - over the one misfire with DJ. You arm chair recruiter and critics are beyond tiring.

A&M says hi and where is our championship? Generally recruitng well means results. Hiring a boob like JImbo negates that

Portal...how many 5 stars leave?

Yes, you have to recruit well. Dabo has! But teams like Ga who get all of the 5 stars, including transfers, have a problem keeping them...many of those future stars leave when the coach uses the portal to fill their position on the team. Kids today don't like the thought that a bad year could lead to replacing in the portal. Yes, Ga, SC, Al, etc use the portal religiously, bringing in as many as the 20s each year...but that means they usually have just as many, if not more (SC) leave to go into the portal. That is what Dabo wants to avoid, spending time on a kid, then having him leave before we play him.
Dabo knows what he is doing, we are still in the top 10 in recruiting each year...which we weren't before Dabo.

Top 10 in recruiting but not top 10 in results recently.

That doesn’t speak too highly of our coaching or development.

Imagine how much people would have paid for Savelle Smalls from Washington out of HS. He was a 5 star DE. Now he is a 3rd string TE transfer at Colorado.

Imagine how much people would have paid for Trevor Lawrence, or Dexter Lawrence, or Sammy Watkins, or CJ Spiller.

Life and sports have no guarantees. It was only just a few years ago that so many "experts" on TigerNet said football was over because A&M signed what was called the greatest class ever. How did that work out?

Practice doesn’t guarantee success, but without it failure is more likely.

We need to also remember that some of these superstar 5* are prima donnas and want to be treated as one. No team playing with these arrogant athletes who, in many cases, are not coachable and become a cancer to the team.

It does not guarantee success but it adds competitiveness when all resources legally available are considered.

Most of our major success is pre portal and pre NIL

We have steadily declined the last 3 years. Every team but 4 has used the portal and the top 25 at least is using NIL to attract talent. We (by Dabo’s on admission) are doing neither while our record and also our talent at the skill positions has declined each year (exception of WR recruiting class last year). The best transfers have usually been skill position and those kids cost the most too. Dabo has done one thing that needed to improve and that was change over the coaching staff from the friend and families version.
To say the portal and NIL doesn’t help be successful is a blind statement considering every playoff team the last 3 years is using both at a high level. I don’t consider 9-4, 8-5’s, 10-3(losing bowl and or ACC championship) to be successful for this program.
We are still recruiting pretty well but it’s getting more challenging at certain positions cause we are not playing the same game as the teams we are competing against.

Clemson has not declined for the last three years…. Technically it is a one year decline from 11-3 to 9-4. And over 100 teams that used the portal were worse than Clemson.

All of our last few years of so called 'decline' can be laid at the feet of DJU...greatest thing since sliced bread turned out to be moldy...the greatest qb coach or offense coordinator could not design an offense for a QB wearing concrete shoes, no reading skills, bad decisions with the ball and a wild arm...Other than those small things he was OK...we don't need an OK QB! Our recruiters have done well for years...we got too worried about what national outlets think!
