Transfer portal

FSU had 289 yards passing....33 yards of those receiving was from NON-transfer players. The only rusher that had positive yards was also a transfer (Benson).
I do NOT like how the "portal" is being used one bit! I honestly prefer if we do NOT use it the way these other "schools" are. The free agency of college football is WAY out of hand. It is being abused from what I believe it was meant to be originally.

100% of the passing yards came from non-portal.
I agree, I hate the way it’s being used. But if you look where kids are landing (if they land at all) they are going places to get playing time. In rare cases will a player land at a much better team and also take the starting spot. However, FSU has certainly bucked that trend with a. Few of their incoming transfers

Uh, didn't Travis transfer from Louisville?
Yep, he did. And, I think he is in his sixth year. Regardless, he isn't the focus of this. He did transfer for playing time, similar to Joe Burrow going to LSU. He has been with FSU for at least three years.
J. Bell didn't transfer for playing time. K. Coleman didn't transfer for playing time. Benson, Wilson...none transferred for "playing time".
The point is, building from within instead of trying to build a free agency-led, competitive team.
Even though we (Clemson fans) might complain about development/lack there of, I way prefer this than not knowing the player but for one, "hired hand" year.

We need to use the portal to fill 1-2 spots a year

FSU beat us with a portal player in his third season with FSU as a starter.
FSU beat us because they had a kicker who made his one FG attempt at 48 yards.
We lost playing a ‘home grown’ year 2 player who had meaningful prior playing time against P5 competition of only 3 games.
We lost because we had a new PK that missed a ~ 29 yard FG in Q4 that had an excellent chance of being a game winner for us.
Experience + good fortune won the game for portal heavy FSU vs ‘Home Grown’ Clemson. Otherwise, we beat them.

I still believe the institution that loses a player should be paid for all their troubles by the receiving school. If FSU and UGa want a semi professional league, make them pay. Say a million per transfer player lineman who portals to another school, 5 million for a WR or QB. That would curtail the portal a bit.

Or, go back to the rule where a transfer has to sit out a year. Same for coaches. They want to switch schools? Sit out a year. I think this would definitely cut down on all the crap we are seeing.

This suggestion has the most merit, and imparts academic credibility to the transfer process.
While sitting out the first semester after arriving on campus. No practice time. Purely time spent on the academic re-acclimation process. After all, the transfer player may have been in a different major or had a different set of pre-new-school classes than what would be required under the new school’s curriculum. Transfer players arriving after the end of the spring semester who attend summer classes are not permitted to participate in off-season workouts with team members or under supervision from athletic training staff; they must focus entirely on academics. If the player doesn’t enroll until the fall, then he sits out playing for the fall semester.
The transfer player still gets his NIL money from the new / destination school.
The portal player isn’t denied the opportunity to make money from a non-school related job… same as with any ‘regular’ student who works while being a full time student.
Academics matter, right? Cough cough gag. Of course they do.

I would not mind Dabo grabbing a guy or 2 at positions he feels he needs more time to develop or redshirt.
A WR, RT, and DE would have been all i believe he needed this year. I also believe Dabo when he says they looked into the portal and there was not much interest looking back.

Unless the NCAA changes the rules, there is nothing wrong with transfers. If a player is not happy where he is, he is allowed to transfer and that does not make him a free agent, it makes him a transfer. In most cases, transfers never contribute or go to a lower level school. If a transfer makes a difference at his new school, the coach did a great job.

Maybe the only answer to fixing this is making it a one transfer rule and when you transfer you are not eligible to recieve any new NIL money that season. And before anyone argues thats anti american remember CEOs, engineers, etc sign non-compete clauses all the time to prevent competitive companies from hiring away talent to steal buisness models, product development, etc.

Wait. Are you saying Clemson should use the portal?
Great idea. First I have heard
Do you happen to know if we ever reached out to portal kids. I have read we do.

Nope, I am NOT saying Clemson use the portal to the extent of FSU and Colorado.
The ridiculousness that 98% of FSU's offense came from transfers is sad to me. It's a cop out for those coaches (Norvell) that cannot do their own scouting or are unhappy with the players they recruited.
The portal is a great thing for some players with certain circumstances. To the extent it is being abused is crazy and is killing the sport, honestly.
Clemson basketball uses the portal a good bit....shoot, I hardly know any of the players on the bball team cause it changes every year...do yall want that for the football team too?
Go Tigers!!!
