Tom Luginbill on Quarterbacks this morning on SiriusXM

May 4, 2017, 8:45 AM

Q: Aside from Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield (edited to add Mayfield), who is the top returning QB?

A: Francois. Also considering Jake Bentley and Jake Browning.

Any thoughts?

I enjoy that Lamar Jackson isn't on there - I know that pi$$ed some people off.

Bentley isn't a top qb returning. He has yet to do anything against a defense with a pulse

Maybe based on his ability to take a snap and run for his freaking life.

Also very good at jogging to the sideline to get the plays.

At least that was the most notable part of his game I saw in our game with them.

There are a couple of notable omissions there.

May 4, 2017, 9:05 AM

Despite being a first rate dbag, Baker Mayfield is a really good college QB. There's also Josh Rosen who has a ton of talent despite the injury and disappointing season last year. And of course Lamar Jackson.

You're right - the original question was other than Darnold

AND Mayfield

He said Jackson absolutely not on that tier and that Rosen was in the convo.

Bentley needs to throw it for more than 10 yards to actually evaluate him.

Jackson hurdles a guy, dominates some scrubs, and gets the Heisman. Watson has hurdled several guys, won and played for an NC, and was money in every crunch situation but one and didnt. That is why Jackson isnt mentioned

Maybe he had to mention one in each conference?

May 4, 2017, 9:57 AM

Otherwise Bentley would be a real head-scratcher.

null

thats what i was thinking too... the SEC never has good QB's

May 4, 2017, 10:39 AM

gotta pick somebody. Luginbill lives in Charlotte so i'm sure he hears a lot of the chatter from Columbia.

SEC QBs will be great next year. here's my list

May 4, 2017, 1:13 PM [ in reply to Maybe he had to mention one in each conference? ]

Jalen Hurts marched down the field on our defense last year. He will be pushed all season by true freshmen Tua Tagovailoa. Alabama always gets the most out of their top option, so expect whoever the starter is to look great in the process.

Austin Allen could be the most underrated QB in the SEC. Allowed for an essentially seamless QB transition from his older brother to him at Arkansas. He's going into his senior season now and has full control of this offense. Threw for over 400 yards against Alabama last year. Arkansas will be everyone's darkhorse team in the SEC West, and Allen is the reason why.

Jake Bentley gets talked about ad nauseam here. The kid has talent. Don't care for your opinions, I already have mine.

Drew Lock has NFL arm talent. Lacks the weapons to fully hit his potential at Mizzou, but he's certainly good enough to steal an SEC game here or there. Should take a leap in consistency in his 3rd year as starter.

Nick Fitzgerald did better than anyone could've hoped following the best QB in Mississippi State history. He seems to have the perfect dual-threat skillset that Mullen needs since they struggle to recruit skill positions at the level of their competition.

Kyle Shurmur was the starter by the end of his freshmen year at Vandy. Looked great down the stretch last year before regressing a bit in the bowl game. Son of longtime NFL coordinator, he could take Vandy to new heights.

Jacob Eason had some highlight reel plays for UGA last year, but the consistency wasn't there. Jake Fromm arriving should sure up some of the consistency issues, but this team is always powered by Nick Chubb's legs. I don't see Kirby Smart letting the reigns off either one enough to take that leap at QB this year.

Shea Patterson got some valuable experience last season after Chad Kelly went down. Offense was watered down, but he looked like the highly touted recruit that he was. Would have really been nice to have bowl practices, but Patterson is still the brightest future around the Ole Miss program.

Jarrett Stidham at Auburn is all hype to me at this point. He put up stats at Baylor, neat, so does everyone. Also believe that Malzahn is very likely to start meddling with him at some point during the year. Rhett Lashlee leaving could still be a positive or a negative. Too early to tell, too much uncertainty to be higher on this list.

Stephen Johnson was a JuCo transfer for Kentucky who ended up taking over the starting gig an injury. In the season finale vs Louisville, Johnson looked more like a Heisman winning QB.

Kellen Mond, along with Tua Tagovailoa, is very, very advanced for an incoming freshmen. Mond should win the aTm job this year. His progress is especially interesting for Clemson fans to watch, as we'll likely face him in '18 and '19.

Brandon Etling didn't do anything to inspire me last year. The brightest light around LSU's QB position is Matt Canada. It will be very interesting to watch over the next few years how LSU looks with a competent OC. Lowell Narcisse and Myles Brennan could both give pressure to Etling. I think that Brennan could take over the position by season's end and could be Matt Canada's guy.

Luke Del Rio had tons of fanfare leading into last season for Florida. This hype fell pretty hard and he had an offseason surgery. Felipe Franks is the next UF QB garnering hype. McElwain is able to get the most out of QBs so it will be interesting to see now that he has 'his guy'.

From a recruiting standpoint it looks like Tennessee will be going with Jarrett Guarantano. Things would be a heckuva lot easier for him if they could've locked up Tee Higgins. No time to feel sorry, Butch is canned the Monday following the 3rd Saturday in October.

The sophmore QB at Southern Cal will be the best passer this year. Mark it down.

Yea - That's Darnold that they said was #1***

They probably want to avoid Jackson mention, since it truly discredits evaluations and the Heisman process
