take a moment to reflect on our way of life here in these United States. You can complain about this or that, all you want. The very fact that you get to do that, and keep your head, is different than most countries in the world.

Our democracy isn't perfect. But, it is the closest anyone has come to it, by a long shot. And the price of that was, and continues to be, the lives of many of our best young men, and now, young women. As a President long ago said, a costly price has been paid on the altar of freedom. It continues to be paid today, in snippets around the world. Those lives lost in far flung areas rarely even make a blip on the news, but those families affected suffer just as much loss as those of WWI, WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam.

Any soldier has but one life to lay down. The fact that they continue to do it, even while the country they defend seems to be descending into anarchy, is something that is wondrous to behold, and more than worthy of honor and remembrance. My deepest sympathies to the families of all those who have paid the ultimate price, and that sacrifice should be remembered not just on Memorial Day, but every day.

I pray, in the name of Jesus Christ, that there someday will come a day, when those sacrifices no longer need to be made.

Amen.

Yes, remembering friends lost in combat can't help but also bring up memories

that are better forgotten. My friend who passed away earlier last week "started" his dental career in the Armed Forces in Korea. Even though he probably did not see that much of the horrors of the war, you still couldn't get him to talk about it. Lost another friend and fellow church member several years back who was on Hamburger Hill in Viet Nam. He DEFINITELY did not want to talk about that experience. Except to say that it was only through the Grace of God that he made it out of that conflict alive.

Great post. I am so thankful for the ones who died for this nation. I get to live this great life because they paid the ultimate sacrifice.

I was wondering yesterday (while mowing grass) that if you asked 100 people under the age of 21 what is the purpose of Memorial Day...how many would get it right?

Most think it was established as a "holiday" to go to the lake, river, have cookouts, or take trips.
