Commentary: Can the Gamecocks upset Clemson? You bet your golden spurs they can
NOVEMBER 25, 2016 BY PHIL KORNBLUT
Clemson is a much better football team than USC. On paper. On the field. There is no arguing that point. The Tigers are more talented. They are deeper, faster and more experienced. And they are pressure proof having been in the national spotlight now for the better part of two seasons.
So, as a 24 point underdog, how can anyone think USC can win Saturday night? Well, as long as a football is spherical it will take funny bounces that lead to surprising outcomes. We see it all the time at all levels of the sport. The best team doesn’t always win.
And here’s what the Gamecocks must do to upset the applecart in Death Valley:
Do not kick off deep to return men Artavis Scott or Ray Ray McCloud. Now, this might be a moot point if the Gamecocks don’t score and get the chance to kick off more than once, but with the way they have covered kicks, and the speed of Clemson’s return men, kicking deep would be foolish. If Elliott Fry can’t get it deep into the end zone, kick it out of bounds.
Run Rico Dowdle right up the gut of the defense. Dowdle has displayed two traits of a great running back, cutting ability and breaking tackles. Teams that have had some success running on Clemson have done so between the guards. Sometimes those defensive tackles slant the wrong way or the linebackers don’t fill the gaps. Trying to run wide on Clemson would be fruitless because of the Tigers’ speed. Dowdle, and possibly AJ Turner, could find some running room straight ahead.
Throw quick passes and trust the receivers can make plays. Jake Bentley is not going to have time in the pocket to wait for his second or third choice. The Gamecock offensive line has been horrible in pass blocking, or maybe Bentley holds the ball too long. Whatever the case, he’s been sacked a lot, and Clemson is among the nation’s best at that. So, slow developing pass plays won’t work. Quick slants and back shoulder passes against the press coverage Bentley will face could work, and then the Gamecocks have to hope Deebo Samuel or Bryan Edwards can break a tackle and run for yardage.
Defensively, do not blitz, do not play man coverage. The Gamecocks should not fret over yielding yardage between the 20s. Clemson is going to get yards. The Gamecocks’ best hope on defense is keeping Clemson’s receivers in front of the secondary then making sure tackles. Make the Tigers drive the ball and not score in chunk plays. Then, hope for the best in the red zone where Clemson has suffered with turnovers.
Now, do I truly believe USC will win Saturday? No. It’s not time yet for the Gamecocks. I think 2017 in Columbia most likely will be their next real chance to taste victory in the rivalry. But I don’t think they will lose by the 24 point spread. And by following the gameplan above, they can make it closer than that and perhaps make the Tigers sweat a bit in the fourth quarter.

it's so important to them to think we might worry. might sweat. LOL.

they may lose badly, but if they can convince themselves that the Tigers worried for even a second about them - IT'S A MIGHTY #### VICTORY!!!
that worthless TD with 0:01 left in the game last year was so priceless to them. because they can convince themselves they made Clemson sweat in the 4th quarter. LOL. And all year long they can crow among themselves how "THEY ALMOST BEAT CLEMSON"
is there a more pathetic group of losers on Earth??

that $CU will suddenly be as talented, as deep, as fast, or as experienced as Clemson in 2017 and have its best chance to win is laughable at best. More grandiose delusions and over-exaggerated optimism.

While we may not be the gap between the two teams will be greatly diminished.

I hear a lot of gamecock fans talking about how much better they will be next year. They all seem to be very confident that they will defeat Clemson. I do not see it. Their OL can only improve marginally, their DL will probably be about the same, linebackers may regress, DB's will remain average. I predict that they may not win six games in 2017.

Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Texas A&M all on the road.
They have Clemson and Florida at home
They get NC State in the opener in Charlotte.
At this point, ALL of those games are likely losses for them.

they will have a better chance next year than this year. That's not unreasonable. We will be on the road with more than likely a freshman QB. They should be a touch better. I think we beat the Coots next year as well, but I am way more confident about this year.

So is a basketball. We all know the elliptical shape makes for the funny bounces. USC education, I guess.

He's forgetting that we faced better and stronger competition all season and beat most of them. Even some of our usual doormats were doing much better than previous seasons. They played in the easiest division in CFB and still only came away with six wins.

So, his first 2 strategic points were:
Nov 25, 2016, 1:03 PM
|
|
1. Kick the ball out of bounds (and let us start on the 40)
And
2. Run the ball right up the middle into the heart of our defense
Think Musschamp has room on his staff for ol Phil??

The ONLY WAY $CU keeps this one close is by Clemson turning the ball over (several times) or by Dabo simply calling-off the dogs in order to save his team for next week.
You are right about one thing. Clemson is more talented, deeper, faster, and more experienced, but that is not going to change significantly in 2017 when you seem to think $CU will have its next best chance to beat Clemson.

Agree. I really think that most Sakerlina fans have no real grasp on how totally different the two programs are in 2016 . The 5 year win streak by them might as well be 50 years ago , and they should try and look at this thing logically . Currently , Clemson is prime rib and the Coots are a cold cut sammich . They find themselves woefully overmatched in the rivalry with a team that is built to last under a young coach who built it , believes in it and will most assuredly maintain it . Clemson should expect to win 18 out of the next 20 in the series so long as Dabo is here .

If they run straight up the middle they will not fare well . Has Korncoot watched a single game this season ? The plays where our defense has given up big yards are traps off tackle and end sweeps . Guy is clueless.
