It's not a power struggle when you don't fight back.

Giving the top 4 teams a bye week in football is huge...

Having a play in game for football allows the higher seeded teams to rest their players. And we know that both the SEC and BiG already are automatically ranked higher just because they are in those conferences. Losing to teams that suck should be a factor in the final rankings.

At this point I would not be surprised if both the SEC and BiG just decide to quit the NCAA and declare a 4 team national championship tournament between the two conferences. I mean, at this point would could the other conferences do to stop them...

"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

You do know that every bye team last year lost, right? It didn’t work so well.

All those two conferences have to do once again to get their way is tell Notre Dame they get an automatic bid if they can win 7 games. Then it’s 3 against 2 and the auto bid format passes.

Imagine if the NCAA basketball tournament had a set number of spots per conference, it would totally change the tournament. Conferences ebb and flow as to the quality of their league. The ACC dominated for many years now it is the SEC that had a ton of teams make the field.

I realize the risk is that the SEC and BIG Ten break away and do their own thing. But I think Congress, state legislatures would get involved to protect non-SEC, Big Ten teams.

If they did break away it could actually be Clemson's opportunity to get into SEC or Big Ten as I could foresee those leagues cherry picking the best brands out there to up the TV contract amount and put a nail in ACC/Big 12.

As much as any of us would object, until the ACC, Big12 and at large teams consistently beat the Big10 and SEC teams, they will hold the power. We just walked and rode around campus last week to see where our granddaughter's dorm (she signed up for her dorm this morning) and dining options will be when she starts school in August and I can promise you, money is not an issue at Clemson. The Big10 and SEC are huge, powerful schools in a huge and powerful conference and the only way to change the narrative is to beat them on the courts and fields.

How do you propose Wake, Syracuse & other ACC teams compete with the SEC?

Particularly when all SEC & B1G teams will soon earn $100M plus in TV football revenue per year compared to Wake, Syracuse and other ACC football teams earning less than $40M per team (with Clemson and FSU earning ACC bonus pay)? And when Clemson, FSU and maybe UNC, MIA, LOUIS and GaT leave the ACC, how many bids then? I would say possibly one. My read is the conference revenue variances will create an increasingly imbalanced level of competition with the ACC merging and/or imploding in terms of national exposure.

Ok if they want this then here is a good setup
16 teams and a left and right bracket
Big 10 and SEC in the left bracket and ACC and Big 12 in the right.
8 teams in each bracket. Seeded by teams in your bracket. If not in a conference then your out.
This way SEC & Big 10 guaranteed one will have a team in the championship game.

are you serious? The ACC and Big 12 have virtually no say because of their pitiful performances on the field. You think they will let 4 teams from each conference in the playoff??? This is not a power struggle, the SEC will get what they ask for and the ACC and Big 12 will just agree and not fight it. The ACC is not even taken seriously , and really doesnt even have a say . Jim Phillips has already caved to what the Sec wants anyway.

These people have absolutely no shame when it comes to winning. They are willing to do anything to make sure that someone from their conferences win the championship regardless if it's fair or not. Money and corruption are ruining this sport that so many people love and cherish.

It’s all out of control. 8 was enough, but they bypassed that to go to their stupid number of 12 and giving teams bye weeks which backfired badly for those teams with every one of them losing.
8 would have been perfect. Nobody cares to see an SMu get beaten soundly in a playoff game. More and bigger is not always better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. 8 was the perfect number. No bues and regular season means more.

It's very simple for the ACC and Big 12 Commissioners...We're not going to participate in a "Playoff" in which you guys (SEC and B1G) are guaranteed at least double the number of bids before toe meets leather to start the season. Your move.

Just give them the 5 automatic byes, what can happen? Oh yeah, when Ohio State, Oregon, Clemson, or a non-SEC school wins the national title in 2025-2026 they'll want 6 or 7 automatic bids. I mean come on. You have to prove it on the field, one of these years we're going to be sitting here debating which 8-4 SEC team deserves a shot... the answer is none of them if you lose that many times.

But it is nice to hear that the coaches like the 5 + 11 format or 5 + 7 currently. They know what their greedy Tv exec administrators are doing, World War Z style.

Esso2’s 3-3-3-3-1 format that would reward four automatic-qualifiers for ACC ,Big 12, Big10 and SEC and 3 left at large.

I would be fine with the SEC and B1G getting 4 automatic bids as long as they are not eligible for at large bids. If they want guarantees then they have to give up something. Last year SMU got an at large bid because they were ranked higher than the SEC three. It's not fair to take hindsight along with hypotheticals to say that someone else should have gone. Maybe SC or Alabama should have gone but they might have laid a giant egg if they had. BTW why is Skanky concerned about who beat Georgia? He does know that they were 0-1 in the playoff last year doesn't he.
