TNET: Tony Elliott on why Clemson isn't rotating QBs, the playbook, and tempo

Tony Elliott on why Clemson isn't rotating QBs, the playbook, and tempo

Clemson offensive coordinator joked with members of the media during Monday’s media availability, and at one point cracked a joke and said that sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. However, Elliott turned serious when it was time to discuss the offensive struggles and answered questions about the playbook, tempo, and the availability of backup quarterback Taisun Phommachanh. Playing fast all the time. Get lined up quickly then make the play call. Sometimes it can be fast, but you can also slow it down from there, too

I thought play calling was better vs Syracuse, but the offensive mistakes were just bad. It was good to see more pre-snap motion, and going into the second half I almost thought that we had turned the corner... (felt a little optimistic) Drops and penalties, however, were drive killers :/ As far as TP7 goes, I personally don't get the feeling that DJ is really in a rhythm for TP7 to disrupt. I will say that he seemed closer to being in rhythm more this game than in previous weeks.

All I takes by some of these ppl are saying that it’s obvious the coaches don’t trust TP is a basic 3 min search on YouTube of the spring game… IMO his footwork looks better than dj, had that nice little jump pass and actually threw some catchable balls and gave our Wrs a chance … listen to how the announcers and Dabo talked
Him up but now all of a sudden he doesn’t get a couple series ? Doesn’t make sense I think they are just too invested in dj and it time to give him a shot … may not work out but you never know if you don’t atleast try him a quarter or so which is the frustrating part for most … he will be gone after this year for sure

Anyone who watched the Spring Scrimmage will tell ya that TP7 outplayed DJ. Also, TP7's team won. The offense was so bland and boring that day, we all assumed the coaches were hiding something spectacular and the explosion would come in the Fall. NOT!! Looking back, that was all they had. The playbook has been reduced to 5 plays!! Somehow slow play calling is supposed to help a young QB who last year ran the offense UP-TEMPO and did quite well at it. Did DJ forget how to play over the summer? I doubt it. Did TE forget how to coach over the summer as Dabo questioned?? Well, it sure looks like it to me!!

You are talking about a game where they were playing two hand touch. Do a little research and come back and tell me TP’s stats from last year. He played in 4 games and has enough stats to equivalent a start. Tell me how those stats compare to DJ. Also go and watch the sc state game from this year. They are pretty much identical. People only see what they want to see. They dislike dj so bad they will sell their house TP is better. I’m not saying DJ has been good. He definitely has struggled. But TP would be no better. Just how I feel.

Oct 18, 2021, 4:25 PM

Ok and dj has gotten a million chances also !! Your talking about stats from a year ago and we see how that’s working out for DJ, he doesn’t even look like half the qb he was … there’s absolutely no excuse or valid argument to make that Tp should not be given a chance … yes the spring game was not live game but his footwork and mechanics were obviously better … he actually have our wr a chance instead of over throwing them by 10 yards … I hope dj turns it around but as of today , there’s absolutely no excuse that TP hasn’t gotten a chance to play !!! It’s bc Dabo is scared to lose him bc no other coach in America would sit back and watch this BS offense … maybe TP give em a spark or atleast give the wr a chance to make plays … maybe he looks absolutely terrible and then we know for sure but i highly doubt its any worse than what we have seen

Agreed, I think you owe it to the team to try all reasonable options, and he may run with the opportunity!! If not, it may spark some competitive juices in DJ and help push him…. I’d like to have seen it at halftime of the NC State game myself, but just my opinion. No player is bigger than the team goals!! Go Tigers!!

Agree, sick of seeing all the comments about TP must be pretty bad … some ppl are just gamers, again he may not be the guy and may look like a deer in headlights but for the life of me I don’t understand why ppl don’t see that he should be given a chance to maybe ignite some energy … and in the spring game he looked great throwing it and giving our guys a chance which is more than we have seen with any consistency through 6 games…I can’t think of a single other coach that would have sat back and allowed this to happen … again I hope dj turns it around and we have seen what he’s capable of but unfortunately sometimes you kiss on guys and that’s what it’s looking more and more like …ex- hunter Johnson … they all don’t pan out and that’s fine but no logical argument can be made that TP shouldn’t be given a chance at this point

"Bet my house on TP, Looked great in Spring Game, and No logical argument against playing TP." Some folks clearly haven't watched him play. TP threw 3 interceptions in the 1st half of the spring game. He went 3 and out vs GT in 2020. A 77 to 7 game. Threw a bad INT into double coverage at SC State. Had 1 scoring drive and 1 more non-drive vs SCST. It's pretty comical to say TP might be the better QB.

Actually watch the tape. Look at his ESPN stats. It's all INT's.

The only person that should be getting calls to see if they are a better QB, is 5ft tall, walk-on Hunter Helms. The guy that actually drove and scored vs GT in 2020. Looked competent and made quick decisions in the spring game. Go look at his 2020 stats and compare to TP. There is your answer.

I don’t see how you could disrupt qb play any further

Oct 18, 2021, 2:20 PM

by giving Taisun a tad of pt than it’s already been disrupted in every game so far. There have been games where we could barely get a first down.

Watson and Lawrence, both rotated during their first season. Usually our coaches are all for playing backups early in games. I’m sure not implying that he’s our long time starter but I do think that he deserves a couple of series, even if it’s scripted. If he can’t get playing time in these past games, as horrible as we’ve played, then when would he ever? If we’re waiting on a blowout game to put him in, that might not even be this year.

Also, it might actually help DJ. Not just through competition but sometimes you can sit and observe and notice the way the defense is playing the other qb. The game slows down when you’re not facing live action.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If they don't have the trust in TP and Hunter Helms to put

Oct 18, 2021, 2:30 PM

them in given how badly DJ has played, it makes you wonder why they didn't go after someone else after the Spring Game. Surely they knew at that point they didn't have a valid backup option.

As badly as DJ has played and as bad as our offense is, what would it hurt to announce Tuesday that both QBs will play and possibly give their defense something else to consider(OK maybe not much, but...)? It's possible that the game will not be as overwhelming to TP as it is to DJ.

There's only one way to find out. Not playing him means he probably won't be ready when we absolutely need him.

Re: Let's see now

Oct 18, 2021, 2:26 PM

communication takes time to get down to field from press box. If any slower smoke signals would be used. Sounds like no trust in the QB to make audibles. Doesn't want to get QB out of rhythm. Hasn't been in much of a rhythm and it's six games gone now. I do believe though there is no QB in the country that can get into any kind of rhythm with the way the offensive line tries to play. I've tried to think of a way to make the offensive line extremely improved but it will take the off season to do this. Make it mandatory ALL offensive linemen to take jitterbug lessons. It couldn't hurt and would improve their footwork tremendously. Clemson's offense is geared toward quickness and agility but not huge bodies.

Re: TNET: Tony Elliott on why Clemson isn't rotating QBs, the playbook, and tempo

Oct 18, 2021, 2:27 PM

I watched a bunch of other college games and no ones offense looks as awful and slow as ours does. Why does the exchange seem to take forever to happen?? When DJ is either handing the ball off or doing a play fake it is so slow and drawn out. Our RB never seems to have a head start when hitting a hole because it takes forever for the hand off exchange to occur? Also almost every single time DJ runs a planned QB draw he takes a step back woth his left foot then goes forward.. he’s right handed, so it doesn’t fool anyone? When DJ takes the snap his foot work is terrible. He doesn’t take a two or three step drop he does a little shuffle then squats? Watch it. It’s horrid. From that position about half of his throws he throws flat footed? His QB mechanics are absolutely awful. Who is teaching this? Nothing the kid does looks fluid? He’s indecisive at the mesh point, indecisive when he runs and on his throws. The kid weighs more than 75% of the guys trying to tackle him but he runs like he’s made of glass. He curls up like he’s afraid when he’s about to get hit. This leads to my big question… we’ve had Boyd, Watson, Bryant and Lawrence. All of them dual threats who used their athleticism to beat you. How many times did we see watson or Lawrence escape trouble when everyone was covered and pick up 10-20-30 yards? DJ is not instinctive and cannot and will not do that. It isn’t who he is it’s not part of his game so if this is your offense why recruit a square peg to fit in a round hole? It’s like Troy Aikmen running the wishbone at OU under switzer. It didn’t work and he got lucky and broke his ankle. DJ isn’t a fit for this offense. At all. As far as the playbook being opened up, if that’s true that’s one pathetic playbook. He’s got this big arm we hear about why not run a post or a corner route to open things up? Why not take Toss out of the slot where he’s miserable and it’s not working and put him back outside? This is all on the coach

I'm pretty sure there's more to it, anyone with half a brain would've made an attempt to give TP a chance by now. Either they made promises to DJ and his dad or benching him would hurt his DR Pepper endorsement or something.....it just makes 0 sense. If it hasn't progressed by now and after the bye week, then I doubt it will anytime soon. TE was an issue before, but having Trevor and ETN back there was good enough to mask some of those problems. Now with TE and DJ, its like the blind leading the blind. At this point you might as well play backyard football and tell DJ to put his finger in the dirt and draw a play or two.

Re: TNET: Tony Elliott on why Clemson isn't rotating QBs, the playbook, and tempo

I honestly believe the coaches are afraid he’s going to transfer if they bench him. What other reason for not putting Taisun or Helms in for even just a few plays? They’ve done it with all previous QBs. DJ isn’t the only problem, but he’s not a vocal leader, still looks nervous, and his mechanics are still a mess.
The QB is the leader. The way he plays and looks on the field is huge for the rest of the team. It’s past time for the kid gloves to be taken off and for him to step up.

No one has said this and I just thought of it, aren’t the tigers recruiting DJs little brother? The kid is supposed to be an athletic freak of nature. Is it possible that Dabo sees the brother as the better player and he fears bench ing DJ could leave a salty taste in the little brothers mouth and hurt Clemsons chances of landing him? The brother is a big boy and he plays DT I think but he’s a freak.

Sounds like the coaching staff is too tight themselves and projecting this on the players - a really bad omen! Why not let it all loose, like spread the formations wider on the field to take advantage of our speed, up the tempo back to our 65-85 plays per game, go with some misdirection rushing plays to counter their defensive over-aggressiveness, and certainly give our receivers more opportunity by running hitch and go patterns up the sidelines and even up the middle of the field! Oh, and almost forgot, no more 25-38 yard punts from us!!!!

TE's interviews are getting worse and worse. He first said "it's the same playbook" and then a few seconds later he says "we might open it up more later." Which one is it? So you are trying to protect DJ by slowing things to a gut-wrenching crawl? You say you did not sub T7 because it would disrupt DJ's rhythm......WHAT RHYTHM?? Your conservative, protective slow down has destroyed DJ's and the entire offenses' rhythm. Let em play man!! Come on! They know the playbook. Let em use it!! You are treating your players like children and they can sense that you do not trust them. If you keep squeezing this bird, TE, it will never be able to fly!!

Re: TNET: Tony Elliott on why Clemson isn't rotating QBs, the playbook, and tempo

Oct 18, 2021, 3:05 PM

COmments/Questions:

1. How do you take a QB that moved around and rolled out in High School when he was recruited and now put him 5 to 7 yards deep in a shotgun with his feet nailed to the turf and expect him to perform as before?

2. The Tigers looked decent at the end of the first half on Syracuse when they had some tempo. When the Tigers come up to the line in a hurry, then delay the snap looking at the sidelines for the go ahead or get a different play, it allows the defense to show one thing and then shift to another defense at the snap based on the formation and tendencies. The faster tempo prevents the DC from making the 2nd or even a 3rd call. What T.E. is seeing from the press box is not what happens on the field at the snap. It's a chess game and T.E. is getting out played so far. It's too late to see what is happening when film is reviewed after the game or a play or 2 later during the game. This is not going to change until the offense gets tempo and steps it up to 75 plus plays a game. That prevents the opposing defense from having a chance to adjust and re-adjust. Right now the number of plays per game is down almost 14.5 plays per game to 64.8 in 2021 as compared to 78.2 in 2020.

Excellent point. If you think about last year though the offense looked disjointed all season. Yes we put up great numbers and it certainly wasn’t like this but there was never a flow to the way Elliott called the game. I watch Ole Miss and I despise Kiffin, he’s everything that’s offensive about college sports but putting the fact that he’s morally bankrupt aside, his play calling is brilliant. He runs certain plays in order to get certain looks, he’ll run the same play a few times setting up the same play with a wrinkle later on that goes for a big play. He runs okay A, B, and C in order to set up D, M and Z. Elliott calls games almost like the entire game is scripted. He doesn’t seem to have any feel for the game or what’s going on. How many times do we see the offense have a couple runs that go for big gains, say 15 followed up by 20 yards and we are using tempo, then with momentum going and the defense on its heels, he calls a WR screen when the defense is playing press man? The momentum we had ends with a one yard loss on first down and the drive stalls. Do our receivers not know how to run a crossing pattern? Is there something wrong with the middle of the field? How many times does an opposing team leak a back out of the backfield on third down as the dump off receiver and they get a first down? Where is our dump off receiver? Not that DJ could toss that player the ball. Instead he’d rifle it at their heads. I watch him play and the comparison that comes to mind is Fat Donovan McNabb after he decided he wasn’t a running QB. He’s hole the ball too long, wait till receivers got open rather than throwing them open, and had zero touch. Balls would never be placed where a play could get made. Instead they’d be behind them at their feet way too hard etc. DJ’s career at Clemson will end with whatever bowl. We play in because the kid coming in will start

Kiffin is at a level T.E. and Dabo together will never approach. With TL16 or DW4, Kiffin would be approaching 1000 yards per game in total offense. No doubt.

Its the coaches who are holding this team down! Not the players! Up the tempo, use the entire playbook, and let the Tigers be TIGERS at the ole tune of between 65 and 85 offensive plays per game. With our slow pace and predictable/limited play selection we are simply making it too easy on defenses by giving them too much time between plays to see what we are doing and set their defensive strategies! Speed it up and put their defense back into panic mode!

I really think there’s something suspicious about how they won’t consider letting TP do anything. I’m not sure if they promised him or his dad something or don’t want him to lose some endorsements. Clemson over the years has been a program that prides itself on playing numerous players and now all the sudden we won’t consider it? Because really why not? At best you score some points, at worst you at least silence the people who are yelling to put TP in.
That being said I do think DJ is improving

I almost hate to bring this up--- I recently saw some video from last year's Boston College game.
DJ looked quick, with fast reaction to the defense. He looked in command. He threw for over 400 yards against Notre Dame. What has happened to him? Did he have Covid and has that affected him mentally? Are there outside distractions--- girlfriend, NIL, family problems, grades? Something has changed with him.

Some of our coaches are great--- Dabo, Venables--- but we really miss Jeff Scott with the wide receivers, and I haven't noticed any improvement with Trevor or DJ working with Streeter. Dabo seems to be hiring position coaches from former Clemson players--- and some of them weren't very good then.

Tony Elliott continues to avoid the obvious....

Oct 18, 2021, 4:25 PM

Elliott continues to throw the same excuses weekly. Syracuse is no Georgia or NC State, and Clemson according to good 'ol Dabo, plays Clemson's game.

So an obvious question for Elliott, What is the measuring stick they are using to say DJ is getting better?

Improvement sure isn't clear enough to convince me to stick with DJ as the solo QB for the next 6 games.

Analyzing the first 6 games...
The number of incompletes over 6 games statistically can't be blamed on receivers. It has to sit in the hands of the passer. Especially when the two main receivers continue to receive the lions share of reception duty. Passing efficiency is 55%. Not great IF rushing efficiency was making up for it.

Vs Syracuse Ross and Ngata were targeted the most and had the most passes incomplete, Ross by the wide margin. Ross is not a bad receiver in anyone's book even running non-standard routes.
Vs BC Ngata had a couple incompletes but the vast majority were DJ throwing the ball away under apparently 'huge' pressure? Going back over every game DJ is an equal opportunity incomplete pass thrower. The solo 'good' stat of DJ's Syracuse passing performance is he didn't throw as many balls away. But that goes to show how the OL was able to keep Syracuse from pressuring him too badly.

If he could make it up by running very successfully I think no one would be questioning his performance. However, DJ's attempted 59 runs averaging 2.5yds when excluding his 37yd scramble. That's not enough to make up the difference with his passing failures. Pace, Shipley, and Mafah ran 113 times with averages from 4.8-5.7yds. To compare with Kelly Bryant who wasn't the greatest passer ran 192 times with an average of 3.5yds and 11 TDs for 2017.

There's enough evidence out there for Elliott to honestly argue Taisun should have a much bigger shot at game time even to test the waters of the 'WHAT IF'.

With Pitt this week I'm not feeling confident the Offense is going to pull out another 'backed into the victory' win.

The stats tell only part of the tale, and the on-field lack of contagious energy is pretty clear. If the Tigers pull off only a 2 loss season it will be a surprise to most everyone, because as it stands, they aren't looking like a particularly top notch offense reminiscent of the previous 14 years!

Anyone watch the Iowa/Purdue game? The OC substituted 2 to 3 QBs regularly throughout the game, in the same drives, heck even between 1st, 2nd and 3rd down. That seemed to be very effective. Do not know if DJ and TP could do that, but we haven't even TRIED!

I love the definition of insanity here, doing the same thing will not create different results. Try something different!

TE knows and sees the same thing we all see. DJ is too slow, immobile, bad fundamentals. WRs are slow as well, can’t get open. Running game is decent, not that great. O Line is not good at all, and hurt, missing three guys. I

They are going to ride with DJ and see if he gets better. Why not?

He is actually saying more than I want him to. He's being pretty open and specific. I don't want our coaches to say anything that can help opponent's scouting report. "Explaining" to Clemson fans goes into Pittsburgh's defensive notebook.

Re: TNET: Tony Elliott on why Clemson isn't rotating QBs, the playbook, and tempo

Oct 19, 2021, 9:07 AM

In my opinion, the "same playbook" is exactly the problem. This playbook has been highly successful but there comes a time where things become complacent and predictable. It seems we are there and teams know exactly what we are going to do. You are fighting an uphill battle when things are so predictable. I thought they sensed this during the 1st drive of the BC game when we came out with some new plays that were very successful. However, we went right back to the same old sequence. I still can't figure out why we don't stretch the field with deep balls. It seems like when we have tried, guys have been wide open or we draw PI. When we don't stretch the field, the whole defense creeps up and makes the field so tight that it is difficult to do anything. Can we mix in a flea flicker, halfback pass, hook and ladder...? I know, those plays are for desperate offenses. Well....
