Defense should be outstanding this year!
Special teams?
Offense is a work in progress, but the talent is there!

Receivers have to CATCH the balls ?? that are close, but not perfect!
Our great receivers react to the ball and and go get it to make the catch, think: Leggett, Williams, NUK, Renfrow, Butler, Clark, Ross, etc…..
This group needs to step up and catch the ball, no drops, no excuses……

If I was DJ, I’d definitely jump in the portal because even in this article you can see how it leans towards Cade. We’re not gonna get better but not because of DJ but because Dabo lost his way. He believes his own hype a little too much. He needs to put his head down and get back to the basics of what made us a success. It doesn’t mean that we can’t evolve, certainly we can but there are core principals that we should never get away from.

Kallen, you need to support another team because you are not a Tiger fan. Obviously, you are not an IPTAY donor or you would cancel your membership.

Sorry you are Totally misreading Dabo, he did the exact same thing with Transition to DeShawn and Trevor. Dabo is the Psych Master

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo hasn’t lost his way. He’s lost an elite QB.

Apr 10, 2022, 5:01 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game ]

Deshaun and Trevor, as well as elite receivers, made up for a lot of coaching and schematic miscues.

Now that we have great but not elite offensive talent, it’s up to our coaches to make it work. They didn’t last year, but I am hoping that the coaching changes will produce a different result this year.

Even without a Deshaun or Trevor, we still shouldn’t be struggling to score 20 points against mediocre ACC competition.

I do agree with you on this one, Judge. Our offense has to be much better than we saw last season for us to be back to where we were so used to being. Confidence brings about more confidence, and we need to build our confidence level back up to where it has been. +1

“For the Orange team, DJ Uiagalelei was 17-36 (47%) with 175 yards (4.9 Y/A) and 1 INT and no TDs. The team’s only TD came after being gifted great field position.”

Beyond the eye test, the numbers sum it up: 2022 is shaping up to be exactly like 2021. Those stats — and those throws — could have come from any one of 9 of DJ’s starts last season.

Maybe the “new” DJ shows up in the fall with all the healthy bodies on offense. But I certainly didn’t see it yesterday.

If he underwhelms early, I’d make the switch, have Klubnik manage games while he grows and the defense dominates. It’s a better recipe for 2022 and beyond.

That said, I’m still rooting for it to click for DJ.

Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game

Apr 10, 2022, 3:01 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game ]

I respectfully disagree. The game was an excellent walk thru for the freshmen (and “new” coaching staff) for learning about the gameday schedule and excitement of playing in The Valley.

Regarding the game itself, the biggest takeaway was how well each of the QBs made (or didn’t make) adjustments to the players and situations on the field. Another byproduct of the game was giving a lot of players time on the field, which hopefully improves their confidence.

It was cold and windy in the stands, I’m sure that affected players too. However DJ’s throwing accuracy looked like 2021 part 2. His last drive left me wondering why he didn’t have that quality all game … why wait so late to put it all together? But his bad last pass, that could possibly have helped to tie the game at the end, left me feeling “deja vu”.

When I got home I watched the recording of the game, and even though they only caught the first half on tv, what I didn’t notice at the game was how engaged Cade was with his teammates and coaches while on the sideline, which shows leadership and translated to more success in the field. I haven’t ever seen DJ that engaged with teammates and coaches during games.

So, I think there was great value in this game for a lot of reasons…

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Does anyone know why the ACC Net didn't show 2nd half?

Apr 11, 2022, 8:26 AM

I had family commitments that prevented my travel for the game.

Had to tape the game, as I always do, to watch later. Have many thoughts on the first half, but the second half was never shown.

Anyone know why? I'm taping the replay on the next airing, hoping they'll fix their issues.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Does anyone know why the ACC Net didn't show 2nd half?

Apr 11, 2022, 9:34 AM

They were showing the spring games from multiple schools on Saturday. I believe they showed Clemson, North Carolina, Florida St., and Wake Forest. Maybe NC State as well, but I'm not certain of that.

Anyway, the point being, they were trying to give exposure to multiple schools in the conference, and the only way to do that was to show the 1st half of each game. If I'm not mistaken, they did this to all the games, not just Clemson. It's a spring game, so nobody is going to have it at 7:00pm, like you would for an actual game, so this was the only way to fit them into one day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe you’re right about trying to show multiple games

Apr 11, 2022, 10:26 AM

but I think they showed all of the UNC game ... at least the TV listed it as a two hour telecast. Plus they broke away from the action in our game before any action took place in Chapel Hill.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I believe you’re right about trying to show multiple games

Apr 11, 2022, 11:45 AM

I dont think that two hours would have covered the whole spring game for North Carolina. They had pre game for about 30 minutes of the North Carolina game. Plus, I think they had Clemson on for longer than 1 hour.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Your final paragraph nailed a big problem IMO

Apr 11, 2022, 11:32 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game ]

I didn't notice it Saturday, but it was apparent to me last season that DJ is not well-liked by his teammates. There was a noticeable lack of teammate interaction on the sidelines last year. It's good to know that won't be an issue with Cade.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Your final paragraph nailed a big problem IMO

Apr 11, 2022, 11:41 PM

Always seemed like the team played harder when Phomm came into the game. Wasn't sure if was my imagination or if the team was tired of poor QB play and sparked just because new QB was in the game, or was it a true lack of respect for DJU as he never seemed to have the humble tone of previous key players mot to mention QBs. Most the former QBs would talk to the fans during media interviews saying they will play better. I remember DW4 crying during interview, i remember K Bryant taking the blame, I remember T Boyd saying it was him taking leadership, but what I don't recall is a humble DJU saying he was going to get better and make the team better. DJU just didn't seem to have the team passion that I was used to from prior players. I hoped that changed for '22 season.

Apr 11, 2022, 10:50 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game ]

That was a huge factor, but Spring games are not much of a barometer for just how good/great a team will be. Rosters are split, and couple that with all the missing players this Spring, and you can see how we really have no good idea of what the season will results will be.

I am sorry but DJ is still DJ, he should have (3) pick sixes yesterday, culminating with the last interception leading to the Whites game winner.
The announcer called it in Real Time, newly enrolled safety Covil read DJ's eyes to make the pick. Remember, it was the running game that rescued last season allowing for the 6-0 run. DJ will either cost us games or he will Not be the starter by mid season

Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game

Apr 10, 2022, 5:36 PM

I agree. I didn’t notice any major improvements in DJ other than he lost weight. That said Cade looked like a freshman. I do t think either QB will best NCST right now. Let’s hope the coaches can do their job in the fall and get us ready to compete. I think this year will look a lot like last year. Defense will be winning a lot of games for us.

Praying the offense can figure it out. Go Tigers

So to boil that down; our Offense was 0-4 on the items you were looking at for improvement.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nicely stating the freshmen & 2nd yr on Defense

Apr 10, 2022, 6:14 PM

largely outplayed the Offense on most series of downs. It was cold and gloomy the 1st half, but the sun brought out better vibes and play in the 2nd half.

Nice analysis by @PAWSitivelyAllIn

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simply put the offense looked bad.

Apr 10, 2022, 8:20 PM

I know we have a ton of injuries. I know our defense will be good but honestly I didn’t see anything that says our offense will be way better or even better then last year.

I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see us getting elite QB play and without it I don’t think we stand a chance of making the playoffs again this year. Cade is the future and it is bright. I believe he’ll be a elite QB in the future. Maybe it clicks soon for him and Dabo will see it too. Otherwise this is going to be another 8-4 to 10-2 regular season with the defense keeping us in almost every game because they’re playing lights out.

Thankfully I believe we’ll have a great running game and hopefully we can move the chains and play small ball enough to keep our defense well rested. I just don’t think we’ll be able to attack downfield and really take the ceilings off defenses.

Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game

Apr 10, 2022, 11:16 PM

I am encouraged to see the tight ends get more utilization. We do have excellent players in that position, but it appears that we forget about the TE as the season progresses. I think Richardson will not let them be forgotten. They are the best ones to utilize the middle of the field, another consistent criticism of Clemson's offense. I do not think any team will run against Clemson effectively. I believe we will use both (maybe multiple) QB's and both DJ and Klubnik will have the chance to develop as the year progresses. Finally, as deep as our DL is, splitting the team hurt the offense far more than it did the defense.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great point about depth of DL vs lack of depth on OL

Apr 11, 2022, 10:35 AM

The defense had every advantage in the game and it showed.

The defense should be great next season, but the fact that they were playing “touch” football tempers my enthusiasm for their domination of our offense in the Spring Game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

W/ injuries, depth to field 2 front-7s, not 2 OLs, WRs, RBs

Apr 11, 2022, 2:51 PM

The spring roster was just decimated by injuries, so I'm not that pessimistic about the 2022/23 offense-- especially if the coaches are willing to risk DJ entering the portal by starting Klubnik early. Big if.

Clemson is deep enough to field 2 front-7s, and it showed. By fall, Clemson should be deep enough to field a reasonably deep defensive-backfield (if they can stay pretty healthy). The D should be natty-caliber.

But, as usual, Clemson would be fortunate to field one decent interior-OL next season-- if there are no injuries. But there isn't much depth, and not enough depth to field 2 decent OLs for the spring game. Hence the QBs, RBs, & receivers didn't necessarily get to show their skills.

Clemson has enough WRs (Ngata, RJ, Beau, Dacari, Spector, Stellato, Taylor, Randall & Antonio Williams) for a good passing attack next season-- if the OL can pass-protect, and there are no/few WR injuries. (And if Grisham forces the WRs to block well, like Chad Morris required.) But with injuries, there weren't enough starting-caliber receivers to field 2 units for the spring game.

Clemson has enough RBs (Shipley, Pace, & Mafah) for a good running attack (if the OL can run-block and there are no/few RB injuries). But with Shipley & Pace out injured, there were enough starting-caliber RBs-- which (I guess intentionally) put Klubnik at a big disadvantage.

Clemson has enough TEs (Allen, Eennis, & Briningstool) to field a good unit next season, but with injuries, not enough for 2 starting-caliber units in the spring game.

DJ looked like 2021 DJ. Klubnik looked like a freshman Deshaun Watson despite only having been a Clemson a few weeks and having a walk-on RB and 2nd-string WR. On VERY limited data, Klubnik already looks superior to DJ. I guess that 5-months from now, by 9/5 (GT), or by 9/10 (Furman), or by 9/17 (LaTech) or 9/24 (@Wake) he'll very likely be clearly superior. And if the OL is mediocre at pass-protection and run-blocking, having a mobile QB like Klubnik will mitigate the OL's performance.

Of course, if the coaches start Klubnik, then DJ almost certainly hits the transfer portal immediately, leaving Clemson with a relatively slender Klubnik, and little QB-depth. Dabo has historically (and understandably) been reluctant to start a superior true-freshman QB over an inferior veteran (Watson/Stout, Lawrence/Bryant) until about the 4th or 5th game of the season. The portal situation with DJ makes it harder.

But if the OL can perform, even at a B-/C+ level, there is enough talent to be optimistic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Solid take! Thanks. Hard to disagree with any of it.

Apr 11, 2022, 7:31 PM

We had what we have to hope was an anomaly on the injury front this past season.

In past years we’ve gone relatively injury free for whole seasons.

Got to think that we are due for a better outcome this year.

I mean we have plenty of players on both sides of the ball to field a reasonable 2-deep barring injuries. But, in today’s environment, guys who in the past were willing to stay around to provide depth are not so patient any more and so-called quality “depth” guys are usually portal bound.

So, fingers crossed that we get back to more normal times with injuries and our depth at kry spots is not tested.

Re: TNET: Takeaways from Clemson's offensive performance in the spring game

Apr 11, 2022, 6:30 PM

My worth nothing observations.

Nothing really different on offense from previous year(s) even though I think that we have legitimate questions at QB, at OL, and maybe don't have the "catch everything close" WR corps that we enjoyed a couple years back.

QBs are human and have weaknesses. One with many of the same from last year, and the other because he is new. WR corps also has weaknesses. They won't catch 100% of the balls that they should and won't bail out the QB the majority of the time. WR blocking? Flip a coin.

Combine the Orange and White OL and we will still have an unproven OL with no two 100% solid starters from last year playing next to each other, in any position, unless Parks slides inside to RT and one of the big Freshmen take his place. So OL this year could be better, but might take some time...and let's not talk about what happens if injuries.

Unless this is the "vanilla spring game offense" that mythically changes come fall,

No plays from QB under center. Either run or pass that i can remember.
No plays from a two-back set. (especially none from QB under center)
Related to #1 or #2 above... nothing that hints at the ability to move to a power running attack to take advantage of own strengths or opponent's weakness.(other than Mafah himself who is a beast).
No plays with QB rolling the pocket or boots that I can remember.
No shifting or motion that I can remember

Some TE targets in the middle of the field to good effect. Hopefully that continues.
