Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 6, 2022, 7:28 PM

Since Jeff Scott left. Bring him home.

Re: Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 6, 2022, 7:47 PM

Please do. The passing game consists of poorly designed wide receiver screens and 50-50 balls (more like 20-80) down field. Whatever happened to designing quick slants plays and mid-range patterns that had OPEN receivers either vertically or crossing the field? Are we that bad or just that unimaginative? We’re back to where we were late last year with no defense respecting the passing game. But it seems our run blocking was better in 2021, and our defense was a step (or two) above this year’s edition to win low-scoring slogs.

This has been the offense for 10 years. Works well when you have 2 all world QBs that can run and a couple of NFL caliber wide outs.

This play calling looks like we are afraid. And maybe there is a reason. Either way the scheme, playcalling and route trees are not good and have not been for some time.

Re: Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 7, 2022, 1:28 AM

Exactly , it looks like we are afraid to throw downfield . Why ? Do we not have confidence that DJ can make the throws consistently ? Yes defenses are picking up on that fact. Notre Dame was loaded up on the line waiting for the short sideline throws or QB runs. It was a very predictable offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 7, 2022, 1:32 AM

Yep. It was so obvious that they didn't trust DJ to throw the ball until the score was out of hand. Everybody that I watched the game with was saying the same thing. I'm sure ND's coaches were saying the same thing. It was so pathetic.

Go Tigers, this is painful to watch, but not as bad as 1975! 2-9 was really painful!

Tough to watch, but we have to get better! We have too much talent…..

Go Tigers, Beat Louisville!

Re: Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 11, 2022, 1:20 PM

People blindly said that last year. I don't think we can honestly say this team is better than last year's. We've had an easier schedule, and our close 50-50 games have come in our favor this year. But by this point last year we had one of the best defenses in the country (#2), a bad offense (#101) but had developed a solid running game to lean on, and good special teams. This year, our defense is okay, but significantly worse (#34) and our offense is still bad (#62) but with no identity.

Re: Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 7, 2022, 6:20 AM [ in reply to Re: Your offense has been unwatchable ]

Why do we continue to start a QB the coaches have no confidence in him throwing downfield? We’re struggling across the board on offense; poor coaching and player development and an OC (or Dabo) that calls stale, ineffective and predictable plays. As for Jeff Scott - bring him in, we need all the help we can get. We were “stuck” last year because we didn’t have QB options, this year was going to be different. Stubbornness to keep things the same to make DJ succeed hasn’t worked. Promoting from within rather than looking outside for the best Coordinators hasn’t worked either. If the goal is to be a fairly decent team to compete for an ACC Title, leave things as they are.

I'm tired of hearing this offense been running for 10 years. First, you can't sustain an offense that only works if you have Deshaun Watson. Second, bubbles screens were not the offense when Galman and Etienne were running crazy. That was also not how Mike Williams, tee Higgins, and Sammy Watkins were used. I don't think slot receivers like Rogers, Henfrow, and Scott were just catching bubble screens. This is a new evolution that send to indicate that they have no faith in the o line.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 11, 2022, 1:21 PM

TBF, under Scott and Elliot, there were a ton of screens (both RB and WR). That's been our identity since Morris left. The only difference is that we also ran a lot of vertical passing plays with Deshaun and Watson to force teams to play back. Streeter's a moron who only calls screens despite opposing teams' pressing.

Agree. Need him now. Streeter's excuse was the weather & only wanted to throw the ball down the field. N. Dame played in the same conditions & overcame it with Brilliant Play Calling. Streeter & "Tommy" Dabo made Zero adjustments. Where were the quick passes like Slants inside & across the middle utilizing our ends & wide receivers instead of trying to set up DJ in the pocket, which was a disaster, trying to throw long downfield. Same idiotic plat calling & not playing Cade will be another disaster for us. I despise "Tommy" Dabo's comment saying our QB's had to play better. 1st of all he was Stupid putting Cade in so late & stuck in a hole. Cade was hit due No Blocking of the rusher & no comment here & then the Stupid decision to put DJ back in. Cade should have started in the 3rd quarter & probably should played in the 2nd quarter. "Tommy" Dabo favors DJ & doesn't seem to give a Rip about what happens. He stuck Cade in the hole hopeful that he would fail. In my book he didn't fail due to his play, but place the blame on poor protection. Passing play called was a Stupid decision by Streeter / "Tommy" Dabo. Streeter needs to be given his Walking Papers Now & recruit the 10 Year old boy that seats behind me that can actually call better plays.

Re: Your offense has been unwatchable

Nov 7, 2022, 11:44 AM [ in reply to Your offense has been unwatchable ]

Dabo ain't no dummy, he saw this coming the last few weeks if not sooner, and he knows that even though DJ is terrible, he also knows that Cade isn't the QB that DW4, and TL16 was as true freshman, and he is afraid of getting him injured, or ruining him as future QB for the team bc, once one of those guys gets seriously hurt, they are gun shy the rest of their career no matter how hard they try to put it out of their mind, it's always there ready to make them skittish, and make mistakes. It happens, and I'm sure that Dabo want to protect Cade from that happening until he can put on muscle weight.

but when you dive deep and realize that he only has 2 250+ yard games since he has been here and both were in in 2020 you realize just how bad he is..if he is our guy next year its going to be another slug and slog through the season offensively

Asterisk. 46 of those 371 yards came in 2 OT periods because DJ wasn't good enough to put Wake away in regulation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 14-1 looks good on paper

Nov 7, 2022, 5:27 AM

Do you remember the score in that game. I'm pretty sure it didn't have anything to do with DJ being good enough, and I don't think that you can say much about the offense as a whole. The defense was putrid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 14-1 looks good on paper

Nov 7, 2022, 7:38 PM

IIRC, Clemson had 2 starting DBs out and Wake had 3-4 starting DBs out. That's why both QBs feasted. But I'd give DJ a "B" for his play in that game. He was 63% with some bad misses.

Nov 7, 2022, 1:41 AM [ in reply to Re: Starting to sound a little like Tommy Bowden.*** ]

BS . The only score Notre Dame had for most of the first half was a blocked punt for a TD. When your defense is on the field constantly and the offense is doing nothing it tends to deflate your defense. ND offense had 2 scores where they drove the ball. The blocked punt TD, a DJ pick six TD , and a Cade INT at the 10 yard line roughly made an easy score. That's 21 gift points. So your comment is BS.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Starting to sound a little like Tommy Bowden.***

Nov 7, 2022, 7:15 AM

Glad I’m not the only one to watch the game. Defense really only gave up 14 points. Offense gave up 14 points and special teams gave up 7.

Too many people look at the score and scream that the defense was terrible. But realistically without the blocked punt and if we had better offense We really only needed to score 17 points.

I’m not saying defense was stellar, but not as bad as score makes you feel. Even watching it felt like they got 7-10 yards per rush.

Is it just me, or are the players not developing the way they have in the past? I think we are really missing those seniors who have grown and developed vs relying on pure recruited talent.

Nov 6, 2022, 7:58 PM

The problem with this assessment is Clemson has lived on the edge all year and could easily be 5-4 right now if not for some lucky breaks.

Wake,FSU,Cuse were games they were lucky to escape with a win.

I don't doubt Dabo has something in mind but he has got to start thinking about the future. Start Cade give him an entire half at least. Let him get the freshmen mistakes out of his system. I want to see a guy who loves the game leading the team, DJ does not ever appear to love the game or like a leader of men.

Calhoun2 said:

IMHO we are not throwing the ball between the hashes due to the lack of confidence in DJU. Streeter may not be a great coordinator but he is trying to avoid the picks when DJ sails balls high across the middle. My vote would be to open up those crossing routes and unleash a balanced passing attack (which will then open up some running opportunities). Let DJ give it a shot. If it's sudden rash of INT's with poor results then you move along to the next best QB. Nothing really to lose at this point. Another game with the same scheme and would could easily lose two more games (counting NC in the championship game). Can't beat any elite teams with the current approach.

DJ is done. Notre Dame his savior originally, was the straw that broke the camel's back. He's a great guy, a great Clemson Man, but it's over.

Let Cade F-it-Up all he wants, we are not going anywhere this year kiddos. Sorrry.

Yeesh, forget that. I still want an ACC title. With an ACC title and some lucky breaks we may still sneak into the playoffs. We’d likely get demolished, but maybe not. Underdogs win all the time. And if we aren’t in the playoffs we will be in a major bowl playing Bama or Michigan or Penn State or some other historic program. A lot of great football left to play and championships to play for.

I agree ,...but it is questionable whether we could beat a Bama, OSU or Michigan. The current Clemson offense would wear down OUR good defense that is getting better with poor play. Look at last night for reference. You can't leave a defense on the field all night and expect to beat good teams.

Nov 7, 2022, 1:30 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney comments on Jeff Scott, injuries, QB situation and what's wrong with offense ]

Our spot in the ACC title game is safe. I don't want us to lose one of the last three games, but I would rather give Cade an honest shot at this point. Whatever happens, happens. If he has two bad games against Louisville and Miami, you can put DJU behind center for USC, UNC, and (hopefully) the Orange Bowl.

I think what is (obviously) so frustrating to people is that we saw that result coming all season long.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was just about to post this, but I'll tag onto yours...

Nov 7, 2022, 4:06 PM

The next two games really don't matter... we're going to the ACCCG regardless. Give the ball to Cade and try to develop him as a quarterback. Goodness knows Brendan hasn't done anything else to develop him. We've got to give the kid a fair shake if we want to see what he's made of. Take a look at when he's been inserted in the past three games... all inside his own 10 yard-line. And I would add that the "fair shake" I'm talking about includes some decent play calling. Let's see if he can manage a game. If the coaching staff doesn't like what it sees, then put DJU behind center for the Coot game... but keep him on a short leash.

At the end of the day, Dabo knows he's got a major problem with the OC/QB coach... he's just got to decide what (and when) to do about it. I trust him to get the job done. He has proven that he can!

Go Tigers--- pluck the red birds.

DJ was 27 for 39 against ND so accuracy wasn't that bad especially considering the wind. That only equated to 191 yards so you are 100% right that we need to open it up. I'm guessing that Streeter was trying to protect DJ after Syracuse, but it made the situation worse.

I'm not sure that DJ wouldn't surprise some people, if we try to stretch the field and open things up.

Nobody is building gallows in Clemson, I'll make sure of that. Dabo is the best coach we could ever get.

And what 'Bama does ain't our problem, nor should we compare ourselves to their performance until we meet in the Orange Bowl. We need to focus on Clemson being Clemson.

"We also have to get Cade more opportunities and keep evaluating that."

I find this quote very interesting from Dabo. I think the hidden meaning here is we tried to get by with DJ for as long as we could but now that we are out of the playoffs we can afford to give Cade more opportunities and see how he does.

Better late than never, as they say. I thought he would play him more, earlier in the year, since he was the next guy up behind DJU, but it didn't happen, and here we are after nine games. DJU is still struggling, and our backup QB has not had enough playing time. Tune in, Saturday, for the next episode of "Who can play QB".

In the past we would get up enough on some teams that the backups could come in. This year in particular DJ hasn't been able to do that. Now that we have lost one I do agree that it would seem Cade gets more game time.

Nov 6, 2022, 10:49 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney comments on Jeff Scott, injuries, QB situation and what's wrong with offense ]

To at least play him some, at some level of routine with the ones and get some comparisons going.

Hallelujah. Something encouraging. About time. About 6 weeks too late. We’ll find out next week. DJ starts, but Cade plays at some determined intervals.

At least my takeaway, we’ll find out if that’s a good take or not soon enough.

Mybe "Tommy" Dabo won't wait till stuck ina hole to play Cade like he just did. It's too bad that T. Bowden was Dabo's mentor.

I read that as Dabo, trying to quiet the fans' calls for Klubnik. If Dabo was seriously considering a change, he'd say something like, "We're opening up the starting job to competition because everybody on the team has to earn their starting job every week."

We win a lot by out-talenting teams. As Dabo will tell you, we were outcoached by ND. ND is not more talented. Our offense , even in the championship years relied on playmakers rather than scheme and design. We just haven’t been as talented the last couple of years. We haven’t had a talented OC since Chad Morris. He did more with less. It’s easier w NFL talent on your roster. The D still has that, despite their awful night, they only gave up 14 (blocked punt, INT in ND red zone, and INT return for TD). Every time we’ve taken it on the hard chin, Dabo has made the right moves. ACC championship and New Year 6 still on the table. Let’s get some non-Chad Kelly swag back!!!

Can’t edit… :(

Chad Morris also had plenty of NFL talent, so maybe we just need more of that… :D

His offense was fun to watch though!

How many times did he say we’re 8-1 and not 5-3?

Nov 6, 2022, 10:24 PM

Come on. I get it. Focus on the positive but still. That 1 matters a whole lot since that 1 game is going to cost us a chance at the playoffs and not just that but that 1 game was embarrassing. One of the worst performances and it was coming off a bye.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are lucky not to be 7-2.

With a crap schedule, let's be honest.

I would hope Dabo brings Jeff Scott back. Our WR play hasn't been the same since he left. Also I would reach out to Chad Morris also, being his job at UCF also is done. Maybe now Chad will understand he is a great OC but might not be made out for the HC position.

No no no and no on Chad Morris. Good grief, the guy interviews for a new job every week. He was an analyst for Jeff Scott he was so in demand. Scott/Elliott were a way better OC than the Chad. I’d be all for bring Scott back to co-OC with Street and take over the WRs tho and while we’re at it, get a DC LB coach who knows what he’s doing. This group of LBs and Defense in general is too talented to be this mediocre

I was so disappointed in how we coached and how we played I couldn't even read all this stuff until tonight. Give ND tons of credit for being ready to play but we were not ready to play or coach. We should not get manhandled like that and knocking somebody down on the way to the locker room at half time does not make up for a lack of play in the game. That was unacceptable - we are better than that.
Has the sky fallen? No, but we need TONS of help to make the playoffs but if we don't play better then don't bother since we will only get embarrassed if we play UGA or OSU at this point.
To say we miss BV is a huge understatement - we've been run over by everyone from Furman on up. Time to step up and play up the press coverage DL. If you can't play on Saturday your aren't going to do it on Sunday. LB's have done nothing all year and luckily ND can't pass and hit the ground so our secondary looked OK.
On offense our play calling stinks almost as much as our OL does. We are slow at every position and a defense that lost to Marshall made us look like a JV team.
We just saved the season for ND so how about we save ours starting this week!

I'm going to be like Coach Mora when he coached Indianapolis in the NFL and was asked a media question about them making the playoffs, and his response was PLAYOFFs?? PLAYOFFs?? Unfortunately, we played ourselves right out of the CFP last Saturday night. The only possibility would be if we blew out Louisville, Miami and the chickens and then blew out UNC in the ACC Championship game. After watching the game Saturday , do you think that will happen ?

I think that it is a decent chance that we blow everyone out the rest of the way. Dabo understands that is the only possibility of making the playoffs. The year that OSU won it all, they took a bad loss and then cranked it up at the end.

Playing with wild abandon is not Dabo's style, but neither is giving up. Take Clemson with the spread and the over in the rest of the games this year. You will be 8-0. If it puts us in the Orange Bowl, so be it.

That's a reach. They lost in week #2 then they demolished everyone after that. The only thing DJU is going to demolish is cans of Dr. Pepper.

COACHES FORUM.

I’ve never seen so many coaches in one place! Good grief, I don’t know why I continue to read the comments on Tigernet. Some of you don’t remember or weren’t around for Ken Hatfield, Tommy West, and Tommy Bowden. Or….just jumped on the bandwagon 10 years ago. You don’t have to like losing, especially the way we did at Notre Dame but for goodness sake, some of you need to put a sock in it! Dabo owned every part of that loss with his comments. If you geniuses on here think he’s not putting the best players on the field that give us the best chance to win, you are wrong! If you ask me who should play QB or who should call plays, or what plays to run, I’m going to defer to the Head coach that made Clemson Football a perennial powerhouse that every football fan and recruit in the country knows about!

Chill out people. The disappointment of losing sucks but the sun still rises the next day! 13-1 and an ACC Championship are still attainable.

Rant over. Go Tigers!

Outstanding post! I’m disappointed, too, but even the mighty Alabama has ups and downs. We will be okay. Granted, our Offense has been sub-par by our NC standards, and our defense hasn’t been able to solve all the shortcomings, either, but it’s all capable of improvement. I don’t think DJ is a great QB, and that hurts us, but I believe a few adjustments can help that, too. I am for giving Cade more reps so we really get an idea how he really performs, and to get him some experience. I’m not ready to quit on this team.

If DJ is the best we have we missed on two 5 star QBs in a row. I find it difficult to believe he is our best option.

Nov 7, 2022, 1:48 PM

I HATE this for Coach Scott.

I liked Coach Swinney's response, so why can't we just have 24 hours to feel even a little bit upset about one of our former guys losing his biggest job ever? Seriously, I pray for him & his family right now because it has to hurt. I'm not worried about him, but man, one day at a time.

I don't dislike the idea of hiring him back, too... but y'all really want him for OC? Really?

I think IF he wants an assistant job to put him back at WR coach; this lets him recruit & coach his position guys while Clemson can get a more determinant guy at OC, know what I mean?

Looking at our lines, both offence and defence,we need a new strength coach. Only the blind can not see the difference in how we are pushed around. I am 74 years old. This looks soooooo bad. I know you can see what I see. Just look!
