Monte Lee on Clemson missing the postseason: "I've failed our club"
Monte Lee has been around baseball for a long time and isn’t used to missing the postseason but Lee will miss it this year for the first time in his 13 years as a head coach. A proud Clemson program will also miss the NCAA Tournament this postseason, for just the second time that has happened since 1987, and Lee told the media Tuesday that he feels like he has failed his team. Sour, yes, but not so Jolly!!! That feeling in the gut is a gnawing pain when you know that you could have, should have done a better job, and it didn't turn out so well!!!

I'm not disagreeing to what you're saying, but I believe that the way the season went as a whole, that its on the entire team from the coaching to the players for not being All In 110% of every practice through every game!!!

Clearly coaches should accept responsibility for the performance of their teams. They are paid very well and the buck has to stop somewhere. Maybe I'm playing semantics, but accepting responsibility is different from saying "I've failed our club". Could the CEO of a major corporation keep his/her job if the CEO admitted failing the corporation? I doubt it.

Don’t know that I’ve ever seen a Clemson baseball team that can’t pitch, can’t hit ,can’t field , can’t bunt, can’t do the fundamentals, can’t play small ball, Doesn’t even know how to cover an empty base. Really hate it for the players, it’s not their fault.

They are the ones playing the game, and they knew what it takes to play winning baseball before they ever got to Clemson, so I say they are just as responsible for their season as their coaches are. This season was a case of not being All In from coaches to players!!!

Neither program or coach doesn't seem to have a clue, but at least Lee admits his failures and doesn't blame it on the players...scholarship or walkons!

Basketball plays good defense but offense is just pass it around and try to hit a three.
I swear though, I played baseball from T-ball through high school and I’ve never seen a team after coach-pitch that can execute a bunt, and seems lost running the bases. It’s just sad to watch

the Brownell scale contains our only win in Chapel Hill, a 5th place finish this year (much better our norm of about 8-10), and a post season bid. You're entitled to your opinion and how ridiculous it makes you look. And I'm not even a big Brownell fan

In historical context that would be impressive. But put into relative context and looking at the big picture of the program and its current state what you wrote is meaningless. This program is in shambles. Completely unstable and 10 years of mediocrity at best. By the way, that win in Chapel Hill was against one of the worst teams UNC has ever had. And we got embarrassed in the ACC and NCAA tournament. You have to do more than just get there. And you should not be embarrassed as a higher seed. You should look like you belong. So I’m sorry, but your points are meaningless and ridiculous when put into context!

Beating up on a weak ACC and then being blown out of the playoffs two years in a row.
Right?

We got hosed with a traveling call when we should have been at the free throw line to take the lead. I must have missed the embarrassed part
It did suck to lose, but it was great to dance again
I think I'm done with Coach Lee though. I think it may have been the Miami series that did it

Let’s not forget that our “norm” of 8-10th place in the ACC

is way better than our historical bottom feeder ACC stays. It’s also been 6th on average under Brownell the last four years.
We obviously want and expect more, but we are clearly in a better spot as a program than we have historically been.

If Monte Lee is still the head coach going into next season then I'm hoping that Dan Radakovich will have the goals set very very high, higher than any goals he has ever set before for a head coach on the hot seat.Put the pressure on Monte because he has got a lot of making up to do for this dismal season.

I know people here didn't like Jack

But Jack would have had better results with this team than Monte has.
I'm generally not in favor of high coach turnover and I will support Clemson Baseball regardless of what happens with Monte. That said - there is certainly a strong argument for change. And our job is strangely more attractive now than it was when Monte was hired because nobody wanted to be the guy that followed Jack after how he went out. I think some of the same people that would not consider the job then may now. I'd make the phone call to Sully or Corbin just in case. Corbin would say no, but Sully isn't as out of the question as a few years ago. Matt Lecroy would answer the phone and would be a heck of a hire. Russ Triplett is a good darkhorse candidate. There's always Brad LeCroy as a fallback option which I'm not opposed to.
If we keep Monte, I'll support the heck out of him, but the expectations need to be much higher than simply making a regional.

So it had been 63 years since Tiger baseball had a losing season. Yes, I'd say you failed badly Monte. Let's keep this in mind as well. The ACC had a very down year and yet...we had a losing season.

College baseball is a really hard sport to win in constantly bc of the way that MLB is allowed to recruit players right out of high school. If that was the case for FB, we would see some really bad FB seasons bc of not enough good players to go around bc, the NFL would leave only border line players for college FB teams to fight over with lies, and everything else to get those border line players not taken by the NFL....

I agree totally. There is so much blame to go around for this season, but ultimately it falls on the shoulders of the head coach. I don't know if some of the coaches are just getting a little too comfortable and going through the motions or what, but there has to be some serious parameters if he stays for next season. I really think we gave some good players, but they are going to have to understand that there is going to be a lot placed on their shoulders as well.

I just think CML needs to go. He makes decisions that just make me scratch my head. His in ability to know his bullpen and which guy to bring out first and so on. He brings guys out that have no business pitching in that situation. The line ups throughout this year were full of head scratching moments as well. I’m just not sure how you can keep someone around that has been eliminated from the regional what 4 years in a row? Then this season doesn’t even make it that far? How can you justify keeping him? This is CLEMSON BASEBALL!! This used to be our university’s best sport and now it’s almost dropped behind basketball as far as successful seasons go. I can’t believe I’m even saying that. But it’s true. We finished 11th in the ACC which is a complete joke. Sorry fellas but CML gotta go.

During the game today, when the camera angle allowed, I paid attention to Monte in the dugout. His body language was telling. I sensed he is not connected with this team anymore. The first warning sign for me was the beginning of the season when he announced he wasn’t coming to mound any longer. What the heck kind of leadership is that? In retrospect it made no difference on the quality of pitching and maybe did more damage to the team’s dynamics.
He’s got a huge uphill task to rebuild this program with whoever decides to stay for next year. I will not be at all surprised to see some significant transfers.

I know we disagree on this but I don't think another year will make a difference. We'll go back to 35-37 wins. Possibly host a regional but as soon as we have to play a decent team, we'll lose... Get the same excuses. Go back and listen to what Monte and DRad have said at the end of each of his seasons, save his first year. It's essentially the same speech year after year. "We need to do better at coaching to put our team in a better position to win..." Rinse and repeat.
Came out of fall ball saying this was his deepest bullpen he's ever had. He said our starting rotation should be better.
I've chatted with some "baseball moms" of either current, former, or been recruited by Monte players. All have good things to say about Monte. But also admit for whatever reason, sometimes it's just not a good fit. And it just doesn't work. Also some hint that players that should be playing aren't playing.
No one wants to see a coach go and you don't want constant turnover. No brainer. Monte has some talented kids but just not enough. And some talent seems they peaked in high school.

I agree he has failed. He doesn’t require hustle or discipline. You have a catcher sitting down on first base during a review, another player eating French fries in the dugout during a game, walking after a passed ball with a man on base, not covering third allowing a runner to go from first to third on a bunt. It appears the players like him but don’t show respect for him. There doesn’t seem to be any consequences for lackluster play or attitude.

One thing that got in my craw today was the play at the plate when the Louisville catcher deaked Sharpe into not sliding making a close call that went under review. Begs the question of where in the h*ll was the on deck hitter telling him to get down. I know that’s nit picking but just another example of poor fundamental coaching.

Clemson radio said that. They were looking at the replay. Could be they all missed it. But when in doubt, you read the catcher and slide.
